Is There Still Backstage Heat on Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn?

0

It was reported last month that both Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens had backstage heat on them after they were kicked off the European tour for going into business for themselves in a segment with The New Day on SmackDown Live.

Dave Meltzer indicated in the latest installment of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Kevin Owens doesn’t have any heat on him anymore but Sami is a different story.

“It appears that all the controversy regarding Owens from when he and Zayn were sent home is gone, but the same isn’t the case of Zayn,” Meltzer wrote. Meltzer didn’t elaborate any further on the topic.

FOX Considering Bid For WWE Television Rights

WWE Fox Sports TV Deal

As we have reported in the past, WWE’s current television deal with NBC-Universal is set to expire in the fall of 2019. WWE hopes to get another deal in place, with an announcement coming between next May and September. Most expect they will stay with NBC-Universal, though there may be an outside party looking to make a bid.

According to a report from Sports Business Journal, WWE met with FOX representatives earlier this year as part of a road show (meetings were also held with CBS, Amazon, Disney, and YouTube) promoting their content. The WWE contingent consisted of top executives, including Triple H and George Barrios (Chief Strategy and Financial Officer). With FOX possibly losing the rights to UFC, the report notes that FOX may consider WWE as a suitable replacement, likely putting the brand on FS-1.

WWE can’t negotiate with other networks until next spring due to their contract with NBC-Universal. The USA Network has long been the home of WWE television. RAW briefly moved to TNN/Spike-TV in the early 2000s, but the rest of the history of the Monday night show has been on USA. SmackDown has moved around, originally airing on network television (UPN), before landing on the CW, MyNetworkTV, SyFy, and finally a move to USA. USA consistently ranks as one of the most watched cable television networks, largely due to their WWE programming, so a loss of the company would hit them hard. They are slated to pay WWE $180 million for television rights this year, so it will come down to an economic cost/benefit analysis when they make the bid to renew.

For what it’s worth, WWE has aired on FOX in the past. Saturday Night’s Main Event aired two episodes on the channel in the early 1990s, including the last-ever broadcast of the show until it was briefly brought back in the mid-2000s.

WWE Struggles with Ticket Sales Over Survivor Series Week

0

WWE apparently had problems selling tickets for WWE events during Survivor Series week.

Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that only Survivor Series sold out in the past few days they ran events. NXT Takeover: WarGames, RAW and SmackDown all failed to be complete sellouts. The other three shows averages between 5,700 to 6,000 while Survivor Series did around 12,000 fans.

Takeover probably performed the worst out of all four events as the top deck was completely empty and much of the hard camera side was empty as well. You can see in the photo below that these claims are true, as when Ember Moon won the NXT Women’s Championship, a good portion of the section was empty:

Vince Russo’s The Brand Recap – RAW & Smackdown Analysis, Joe’s Clown Trunks, Owens and Zayn Have Heat? More!

0

Russo is joined on today’s show by his co-host Jeff Lane, Kenny Bolin, and Big Vito.

Russo says this week’s RAW and Smackdown Live had to be the worst 5-hour follow up to a major PPV in WWE’s history. He believes that Stephanie McMahon has to be the least cool character in the business right now, and she’s very frustrating to watch because it’s quite clear that she thinks she’s cool.

Bolin says he recalls a time when Stephanie McMahon was a gorgeous woman. However, the longer that she’s with Triple H, the more he’s starting to make her look like Chyna by turning her into a gym rat.

Russo says there was no need for Braun Strowman to be in the opening segment of RAW this week, and his inclusion there made no sense whatsoever. He thinks the only reason that Strowman was in that segment was to set up the match with Jason Jordan later in the night, and that’s just lazy booking in his opinion.

Russo goes on to say that there was a much easier way to get Strowman involved in this angle. Angle should have named Strowman as the first member of Team RAW, which would have pleased Strowman and resulted in him having Angle’s back. Then when Triple H attacked Angle at Survivor Series, Strowman getting angry would have made much more sense.

Triple H & Kurt Angle Reportedly Hurt Before Survivor Series

0

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest issue of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Kurt Angle and Triple H both worked Sunday’s WWE Survivor Series event hurt.

Triple H was banged up after working several straight matches in the UK prior to Survivor Series. This would explain why he wasn’t really involved much in the traditional 5 vs. 5 Survivor Series match until the finish.

Angle appeared on the show with his leg wrapped up heavy and it was clear his knee was in bad shape. It’s being said that he too was hurt while working a match in the UK prior to the event.

Dinner With the King Recap – Sexism in Wrestling, Do Wins & Losses Matter in Wrestling? Undertaker Set for A Return? More!

0

Jerry Lawler is joined on today’s show by his co-host, Glenn Moore.

Lawler informs that after his work was done as part of the Survivor Series kickoff show this past Sunday, he went backstage and watched the PPV with The Undertaker and Kane, who were backstage at the event. He says that John Cena walked past the room at one point, backed up, looked in and said, “That’s cool”, and walked away again. Lawler agrees that it was pretty cool to sit and watch the show with those two guys.

Moore asks Lawler if he thinks we’ll see The Undertaker return to the ring, and Lawler informs that Undertaker looked really good this past Sunday. After last year’s WrestleMania Lawler thought we had seen the last of Undertaker, but after seeing how good he looked on Sunday, Lawler thinks we’ll see ‘Taker return to the ring at some point.

Lawler speaks about the attitude of some fans who are unhappy with WWE spotlighting older talents like Triple H and Kurt Angle. He says the wrestling business relies on older talents to usher in the new wave of Superstars. It’s important that well known names like Angle and Triple H are kept strong so that when it comes time for them to put over a young, budding star, the torch being passed will mean even more.
