Fusion #29 Date: November 2, 2018 Location: Melrose Ballroom, New York City, New York Commentators: Matt Striker, Tony Schiavone It’s time to get back to the regular shows this week after last week’s Halloween special. Things could be a little more interesting this time around as the Hart Foundation is back, which should make for a rather different kind of show. Fightland is coming up soon enough too so we should get some build towards the big show. Let’s get to it. We open with a look back at Shane Strickland vs. Tom Lawlor with Low Ki costing Shane the win. Lawlor said he would cash in his World Title shot in February, so Sami Callihan attacked him at a media event while Low Ki watched. Opening sequence. Here’s Konnan for a chat. After sucking up to the crowd, Konnan says a witch named Salina de la Renta kept Pentagon and Rey Fenix from being here so here are Salina and Ricky Martinez to cut him off. There was a lot going on. Last Sunday, WWE presented its first ever all women’s pay per view with Evolution. The show was a long time in the making and finally became a reality after a lot of hype. It was certainly an emotional night for a lot of the people involved and there were a lot of things going on behind the scenes as well. Since it’s WWE, there were cameras right there as well. It was a big deal. [This post contains video, click to play] WWE has released a new video looking behind the scenes at Evolution on the day of the show. This includes the women getting ready for their matches and talking about how big of a day this is for everyone involved. The video also features people both on and off the show talking about how important everything is both for them today and for the future generations of women’s wrestling. Opinion: I know it got talked about to no end, but this really was a huge show for both WWE and wrestling as a whole. There have been all women’s shows before,..

WWE Looks At The Top Five Survivor Series Teams

November 5, 2018 • Admin

The old days of awesome. Later this month, WWE will present its annual Survivor Series event. This show is the second longest running in the history of WWE and that means there are quite a lot of teams from the show’s namesake match. The matches have changed somewhat over the years but the basic core idea remained the same. But since this is wrestling, you have to argue over which was best. On its Instagram page, WWE has released a graphic showing the Top Five Survivor Series teams of all time. The list ranges from near the beginning of the series to modern times, with a wide mixture of teams. Some of them contain five members, which was the case in the original run of shows and became common again in modern times, as well as four man teams, which became the norm for most of the 1990s. Triple H’s Injury May Have Shelved A Major WrestleMania 35 Match

November 4, 2018 • Admin

Game off. Last month at SmackDown 1000, Evolution made their first appearance together in a good many years. The segment was mainly focused on Batista, who has become a star in Hollywood since his time in wrestling ended. During the reunion, Batista mentioned that Triple H had never beaten him. This seemed to be setting something up, but then things changed a bit in November. According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the proposed match between Batista and Triple H, which may have headlined WrestleMania 35, is now unlikely to take place due to Triple H’s torn pectoral muscle. WrestleMania 35 is just over five months away and it is unlikely that Triple H will be healthy by then. Prior to the injury, there were also rumors that the match wouldn’t be taking place until SmackDown Live moves to FOX on October 19, 2018. These sound like wrestling words. [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: I can’t say I’m surprised by any of this, but at the same time it’s not ..

Video: Top Five Champion vs. Champion Matches

November 4, 2018 • Admin

This is what it’s all about – Gorilla Monsoon. Titles and champions are what drive wrestling companies. More often than not, wrestlers get in the ring and face off for the right to become champions. The personal issues and drama are there too, but they often tie into the title matches. But what happens when two people have a title of their own? Well in honor of the upcoming slate of champion vs. champion matches at Survivor Series, WWE is looking back at some of the better ones. [This post contains video, click to play] On its Instagram page, WWE has released a new video looking at the Top Five Champion vs. Champion matches in history. The list includes both singles and tag team matches with a wide history of matches included. Only three of the matches were actually for titles, with two of them only being for bragging rights. Two matches include the final match in the titles’ histories. Opinion: I’m not exactly a fan of this kind of a match but it seems to be the kind of thing that ..

Injury Updates On Shawn Michaels And The Miz

November 4, 2018 • Admin

Anyone for an injury? On Friday, WWE presented Crown Jewel, which was quite the packed show. The show included a variety of matches with some impressive performances, including from some people having multiple matches in one night and someone having their first match in over eight years. Both of them were a little banged up during the show, but how bad was it? According to Ringsidenews.com, both Shawn Michaels and the Miz are find after Crown Jewel. Miz’s knee injury prior to the finals of the World Cup of Wrestling finals wasn’t a real injury in the first place. Michaels had a cut over his eye and a bloody nose but nothing serious. There is no reason to believe that Miz will miss any ring time, unless it is due to storyline reasons. Michaels was fine enough for a chat after the match. [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: It’s good that neither is injured as you never can tell what is going to happen when you get in the ring. Miz’s injury was convincing enough and Mi..

Video: Shawn Michaels On If He’ll Wrestle Again

November 3, 2018 • Admin

One more all over again? Yesterday at Crown Jewel, Shawn Michaels made his long awaited return to the ring. Michaels looked perfectly fine in the ring and even had flashes of some of his previous brilliance. Considering he hadn’t had a match in eight years, the performance was all the more impressive. So now comes the most obvious question: will he get back in the ring again? In a new video posted to WWE’s YouTube page, Michaels talked about what he’s going to be doing now that his match is over. Michaels talked about being sore from the match with pains that remind him why he doesn’t do this anymore, but also that he had a good time while he was in the ring. With the match out of the way though, he said that he was returning to his regular life and not going to do it again “if he can help it”. You can see his full statement here: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: As much as I want to believe him, I have a hard time buying that Michaels won’t get in the ring again..

Who Topped 2018’s PWI Female 100?

November 3, 2018 • Admin

Was there really another option? The Women’s Revolution has changed wrestling in a variety of ways, with the main focus being on the women of WWE actually looking important after years of being treated as filler or sideshow attractions. Now things have changed considerably for the better, with WWE actually having some of the biggest stars in the world. But who is the best? Pro Wrestling Illustrated has released its annual PWI Female 100 list, ranking the top 100 female wrestlers in the world. The list was topped by current Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey, who made her debut back in April at WrestleMania 34. This list ranks names from October 2017-October 2018. PWI’s list is more based on a kayfabe perspective, with wins and losses playing a large role in the rankings. Here’s the top ten: 1. Ronda Rousey 2. Alexa Bliss 3. Charlotte Flair 4. Io Shirai 5. Asuka 6. Shayna Baszler 7. Carmella 8. Nia Jax 9. Mayu Iwatani 10. Kairi Sane Opinion: It’s hard to argue with Rousey having the t..

Update On Main Roster Stars Heading Down To NXT

September 19, 2018 • Admin

Welcome home. NXT is viewed as college for a lot of wrestlers. The wrestlers get to spend at least a year down there and learn how to be ready for the main roster, but at the same time their runs down there has to end. They have to go up to the main roster (or get released) at some point and that can lead to mixed results. However, something might have changed now and it’s a good thing. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, more WWE main roster stars are likely to head down to NXT for some appearances at house shows when they have nothing else going on. People like Luke Harper and Tyler Breeze, former NXT stars whose current tag team partners are sidelined due to injuries, have made recent appearances on NXT house shows in singles matches. If nothing else, the crowd reactions will be great. [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: I see absolutely nothing wrong with any of this. NXT gets a boost with some bigger names appearing on their shows and these guys get..

Rumor: WWE Bringing Major WCW Event To WWE Network?

September 19, 2018 • Admin

Well it’s a better name. You’re familiar with WrestleMania right? You know, biggest show of the year, most important wrestling event ever and that show that sells out a 70,000 person stadium every year? It’s true that it’s a big deal, but it’s far from the first annual supershow in wrestling history. That would be Starrcade, which debuted in 1983 and ran annually until 2000. WWE brought it back last year and now they might be doing even more with it. Starrcade is returning again this year with the event taking place on November 24 at the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio. Bringing the show back wasn’t the big story, but according to PW Insider Elite by way of Ringsidenews.com, there is a reason to believe that this year’s Starrcade will be airing on the WWE Network, mainly due to the increased prices of the show. Here is the theory behind the idea: “I also asked if Starrcade would be airing on the WWE Network on November 26th and my gut feeling is that maybe it will. Because the prim..

What Is The Relationship Between Andrade Cien Almas And Zelina Vega?

September 19, 2018 • Admin

Sometimes it just clicks. Earlier this year, Andrade Cien Almas and Zelina Vega were called up to the main roster after a very successful run in NXT. The two instantly clicked and have become a big time deal on SmackDown Live. They work very well together and know how to compliment each others’ talents very well. Of course that brings up a certain question from fans and Vega has answered it pretty plainly. Vega recently appeared on Lilian Garcia’s Chasing the Glory podcast to discuss a variety of topics, mainly focusing on her current partnership with Almas. During the interview she dispelled the rumor that the two of them are dating, saying instead that it’s more like the two of them are brother and sister who work very well together. Here’s what she said on it, with transcription courtesy of Wrestlinginc.com: “Once I got there Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas and I just clicked. I feel like now – it’s funny because people are like, oh my God, they are together – he is like my brother. We fight..

Alexa Bliss Injured, What Is Her Mixed Match Challenge Status?

September 19, 2018 • Admin

Hopefully it’s little instead of big. Earlier this year, the first season of Mixed Match Challenge featured a variety of teams being thrown together to compete in a tournament. One of the most successful was Alexa Bliss and Braun Strowman, who turned out to have some outstanding chemistry. It was a no brainer to bring them back for the second season, though there is a bit of a hiccup. As announced on WWE’s YouTube channel, Bliss has suffered an arm injury and won’t be able to participate in this week’s Mixed Match Challenge debut. Bliss was scheduled to team with Strowman to face Kevin Owens and Natalya but Ember Moon has been chosen to replace her. There is no word on how long Bliss will be out, but she will be back in the Mixed Match Challenge as soon as she is healthy. Here’s WWE’s official announcement: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: Aside from the obvious reasons, I hope Bliss is back in the ring in a hurry. The team of Bliss and Strowman is one of the mos..

September 18, 2018 • Admin

That’s Certainly An Interesting Choice. WWE Ranks Top Five Hell In A Cell Matches

September 17, 2018 • Admin

Count em, count em, count em down. Hell in a Cell is one of the top gimmick matches that WWE has to offer. It’s not the hardest concept in the world to grasp either: take a feud that has gone on for a long time and put them inside a big steel box until one of them can’t keep going. While the matches might not have the same impact that they’ve had in the past, there is a lot of history to go through here and that’s what WWE is doing today. In a new post to their Instagram account, WWE has ranked the top five Hell in a Cell matches in history. The matches are mostly from the earlier days of the Cell’s history but there is one from modern times. As of last night’s show, the match has been used forty times in history with the first version of the match coming on October 5, 1997 at Badd Blood with Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels. View this post on Instagram These #HIAC matches were some for the ages… A post shared by WWE (@wwe) on Sep 16, 2018 at 11:26am PDT In case you need some more Cel..

Video: Top Ten Trapped Superstars Getting Smashed

September 17, 2018 • Admin

Somebody get me out of here! Every now and then, the Superstars and the wrestling ring just aren’t enough to settle a score. Sometimes you need something a little more to put someone down and if that’s the case, you might need a few more pieces to work with in a match. That might involve locking someone down in one place, and if that’s the case, someone might take it a bit further. Roll the countdown! I think they broke him. [This post contains video, click to play] WWE has released a new Top Ten video looking at Trapped Superstars Getting Smashed. The idea here is exactly what it sounds like: wrestlers trapped in one way or another being crushed or attacked by something else. The list spans a very long stretch of time, with some instances from the 1990s and some going all the way to modern times with one entry from earlier this year. Opinion: This is the kind of thing that can mean a lot more for advancing an angle as there’s only so much you can do in a regular match. Sometimes ..

Video: Fans Furious At The End Of Hell In A Cell

September 17, 2018 • Admin

I mean, can you blame them? The ending of last night’s Hell In A Cell pay per view saw Brock Lesnar make a surprise return to attack Braun Strowman and Universal Champion Roman Reigns. The result of the attack was the match being turned into a no contest, which isn’t something that often happens inside the Cell. As you might expect, the fans weren’t exactly pleased. And of course, there’s video. [This post contains video, click to play] A new video has surfaced showing the fans’ reaction after the show went off the air. The fans, at least the ones in the section filmed, loudly chanting “BULL****” in relation to the ending of the show. The pay per view ended almost immediately after the main event was over and there is a possibility that the show ended before such a chant could be heard on the WWE Network feed. Opinion: I can’t say I disagree. WWE can’t push this concept of the Cell being the ultimate nightmare and then have the match end in a no contest because the two of them can..

Rumor: Why Was Hell In A Cell Painted Red?

September 17, 2018 • Admin

I mean, it’s kind of hard not to notice. If you watched last night’s Hell In A Cell event, you might have noticed something different about the Cell itself. In addition to being one of the most intimidating sights in the wrestling world just due to being huge and scary in general, it is now fully painted red. That’s a big enough change that there almost has to be a reason behind it, and now we might know what it is. Notice anything different? [This post contains video, click to play] According to the WrestleVotes Twitter account, the idea might be as simple as Vince McMahon not realizing that the Cell itself was twenty years old and deciding that it needed a face lift. The Cell debuted on October 5, 1997 at Badd Blood when Undertaker faced Shawn Michaels. The original structure was sixteen feet high and the newer version, which debuted at Unforgiven 2006, is twenty feet high. Asked about the Red Cell… source said “honestly, w/ all this 20 yr talk about Taker & Foley, I think Vince..

WWE Scores Major Win In A Variety Of Lawsuits

September 17, 2018 • Admin

So much for that. WWE is a huge wrestling company. Actually they’re a pretty big company no matter what profession we’re talking about. They have very deep pockets and all kinds of resources. That means people are going to come after them, even if there’s not much validity to the claims made. Some of those claims were brought up again in recent years, but this time they’re going in WWE’s favor. According to PWInsider.com, a US District Court Judge in Connecticut has dismissed all lawsuits currently against WWE in regards to concussions. The lawsuits, many of which have been filed by attorney Konstantine Kyros over the last several years, claimed that WWE was responsible for a variety of head injuries due to not properly advising the wrestlers on the risk of such injuries. I wonder if the lawsuit went like this. [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: That’s about the only way it could have gone. At the end of the day, wrestlers have to know what kind of risks they’re ta..

Rumor: When Is Brock Lesnar Scheduled To Wrestle Again?

September 17, 2018 • Admin

Here he comes again. Last night at Hell In A Cell, Brock Lesnar made his return from WWE after a full month away from the company. While that doesn’t sound like that long on paper, it’s much more interesting when you consider that Lesnar seemed to be heading back to the UFC full time, particularly with a Heavyweight Title fight against champion Daniel Cormier penciled in for January. That’s a long way away though, so what might be on tap for the time in between? According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the current plan is for Lesnar to wrestle a match at the Saudi Arabia show on November 2. There is no word on who he will be facing at the show, though it isn’t likely to be Universal Champion Roman Reigns or Braun Strowman, the two of whom will be facing off against each other in a six man tag. Lesnar is still rumored to be facing Cormier in January. I’d say he looks fine. [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: I can’t say I’m surprised at the idea of Lesna..

Hell in a Cell 2018 Date: September 16, 2018 Location: AT&T Center, San Antonio, Texas Commentators: Michael Cole, Renee Young, Corey Graves, Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton Welcome to the first show of the three that WWE is currently building. In this case we have the show designed around carnage and that could mean a few things. The show hasn’t exactly blown me away on paper but maybe they’ll surprise me here. There are two matches inside the big red cage tonight so let’s get to it. Kickoff Show: Smackdown Tag Team Titles: Rusev Day vs. New Day Rusev Day is defending after winning a tournament. Kofi wastes no time in double stomping English and it’s already off to Rusev. A fall away slam has Kofi in trouble and we go split screen to see an Alexa Bliss vs. Ronda Rousey ad. Back with Kofi fighting out of a front facelock and hitting a tornado DDT for the tag off to Big E. Suplexes abound but Rusev tags himself in to kick Big E. in the head.
