REVIEW: Starrcade 2019: The Tradition Continues

•

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Starrcade 2019 Date: December 1, 2019 Location: Infinite Energy Arena, Duluth, Georgia Commentators: Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton I mean, it has been a whole week since their last big event. This is another one of those house shows that is airing on the Network in a shortened form. It isn’t exactly something interesting though last year’s show was pretty good. The two matches announced aren’t exactly breaking new ground but they could be good. Let’s get to it. The announcers talk about the history of Starrcade and ..

VIDEO: Major Tease Takes Place After AEW Dynamite

•

Stop teasing us. The AEW roster is one of the most well rounded in all of wrestling today. You have legends, current stars and young up and comers, all mixed together to create a heck of a lineup. There are some names on there who are just flat out bigger stars than others though, and one of them was teasing quite the change after this week’s edition of Dynamite. The main event of this week’s Dynamite saw Cody Rhodes/Death Triangle lose an eight man tag to Andrade El Idolo/FTR/Malakai Black. One of the stories of the match was the fans not liking Rhodes, despite him being on the good side. Fans booed him throughout the match and cheered when he was in trouble. In a new video posted to Twitter, Rhodes teased going through the villains’ tunnel after the show went off the air before eventually going through the good side. This comes as Rhodes has been refusing to turn to the bad side. It was a surprising moment. Check out the tease, plus what Rhodes has been doing as of late: [This pos..

Top NXT Star Signs Extension, But It’s Not A Very Long One

•

Stick around for a bit. There have been all kinds of wrestlers leaving WWE over the last few months and that might continue to be the case for a long time to come. What makes things interesting is that there have been some wrestlers who have left on their own accord, which can make for some very important decisions. Now we have another one from a wrestler in a prominent spot. According to Fightful Select, Johnny Gargano has agreed to a one week extension with WWE, meaning that he will be with the company until December 10. This will allow Gargano to wrestle in WarGames on December 5. Gargano has yet to sign a new long term deal and there is no word on where he plans to go next. He will be teaming with Tommaso Ciampa, LA Knight and Pete Dunne to face Bron Breakker, Carmelo Hayes, Grayson Waller and Tony D’Angelo at NXT WarGames. Gargano has done well in NXT. Get Ready To Jump? Jeff Hardy Teases Hardy Brothers Reunion

•

One more time? While they might not be the biggest focus in the company all of the time, there are some legendary WWE tag teams. The company has had its fair share of great ones over the years and some of them are still around today. That can make some reunions a possibility and now one famous tag wrestler is talking about having one more run with his partner. During a recent interview with TalkSport, WWE’s Jeff Hardy mentioned that he is hopeful for a Hardys reunion with his brother Matt, who is currently in AEW. Jeff said that he is not sure when or where such a reunion would take place but he is certain that it will. He called wrestling unpredictable, as wrestlers are released and contracts expire, so there will be a chance for their paths to cross again. I could see it happening too. AEW Confirms Rumors Of New Quarterly Special

•

There’s the announcement. AEW has come a long way in its short history, though a lot of the things they have done involves a tribute to wrestling history. Some of these are a bit less obvious than others, though there are some where AEW flat out tells you what they are doing. That is the case again, as they are bringing back a classic show for the first time in over thirty years. This week on Dynamite, AEW officially announced their first ever Battle Of The Belts special, which will air on January 8, 2022 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Battle Of The Belts was run by the National Wrestling Alliance in the late 1980s. This show had been rumored earlier in the month but this is the first official announcement of the event. Nothing has been set for the show as of yet. Battle Of The Belts is a heck of a show. Ring Of Honor TV Results – November 17, 2021

Ring of Honor Date: November 17, 2021 Location: 2300 Arena, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Commentators: Ian Riccaboni, Silas Young The long march to Final Battle continues as we are still in the post-Death Before Dishonor TV tapings. In other words, these are still matches from before all of the company’s future went away, so there might still be a little something here. Then again, I’m not sure how much hope that really is. Let’s get to it. Opening sequence. Quinn McKay welcomes us to the show and gives us the rundown. Caprice Coleman vs. Beer City Bruiser This is Coleman’s first singles match in a long time and Bruiser has Brian Milonas and Ken Dixon with him. Before the match, Bruiser says Coleman wasn’t an official entrant in the Honor Rumble so he was never eliminated and should be #1 contender. Coleman comes to the ring and Bruiser laughs at the idea of Coleman getting back in the ring….so he can face Dixon instead. Caprice Coleman vs. Ken Dixon Dixon is in jeans and the Bounce..

AEW Dynamite Results – November 24, 2021

•

Dynamite Date: November 24, 2021 Location: Wintrust Arena, Chicago, Illinois Commentators: Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone, Excalibur We’re back in Chicago, as AEW really likes coming here. It’s also just before the start of Thanksgiving weekend, so this is going to have a bit of a special feeling. Bryan Danielson and CM Punk are both in action this week so it certainly feels like a big show. Now just make that work. Let’s get to it. Opening sequence. CM Punk comes out for his match but hold on though as here is MJF to interrupt. MJF says it doesn’t feel so good to be interrupted and calls him Punky Brewster. Fans: “SHUT THE F*** UP!” MJF: “No.” Last week was almost as bad as that time when Punk took his ball and went home. MJF brings up the Pipebomb, which was a great moment. The thing is though, every MJF moment is the best moment because he isn’t a one trick pony. MJF respects Punk for everything he does, including being straightedge, though he can’t believe that a straightedge man cou..

KB’s Review: The Egg Theory

•

I don’t think I’m breaking any new ground when I say that WWE has been a bit dull as of late. By as of late, I mean over the last few years, as while there have been some bright spots, there are only a few things that can really make the show more interesting. WWE seems to have gone out of its way to make the show as uninteresting and bland as possible in a lot of ways, and that is going to cause some serious issues. However, they seem to have stumbled into something over the last few days that gave them a boost, at least in the short term. Over the weekend, WWE presented its annual Survivor Series show. As has been the case for the last few years, the show was built around a series of matches between Monday Night Raw and SmackDown for brand supremacy (which was so important that I don’t believe the winner was even mentioned on Sunday or Monday). That isn’t exactly inspiring stuff, but this show had a bonus, as Vince McMahon himself was here to save the day, albeit with the help of….C..

Say It Isn’t So: Another NXT Star Out Of Action Due To Injury

•

It could be a little while. A wrestler can have all of the momentum in the world but there is always the chance that an injury could bring them down. That is never a good thing to see, but the most important question is how bad things are. Some injuries are a lot worse than others and can keep someone out of the ring for a good while. Now that seems to be the case again. This week on NXT, it was announced that Dexter Lumis would be out of action for about a month due to suffering a broken hand. Later in the night, Lumis’ wife Indi Hartwell and her friend Persia Pirotta lost a tag team match when Hartwell was distracted with thoughts of her husband’s injuries. There is no word on why Lumis is scheduled to miss time or if he has a legitimate injury. Lumis is quite the talented star. WWE Legend Lists His Problems With Today’s Product, Cites Changing Fans

•

Can you blame him? WWE has been around for a long time now but the company is certainly undergoing some problems at the moment. There have been a lot of challenges for the company and the fans are not exactly watching as much as they used to. At the same time, the company has released all kinds of wrestlers in a short amount of time. This can make for some confusing moments, with one legend seeming to agree. WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler appeared on Busted Open Radio and spoke about the current WWE product. Lawler said that it can be hard to watch at times, as he felt like he needed to cram for an exam to know what is going on and who everyone is. He went on to say that things change so fast these days and fans have a shorter attention span. As a result, WWE has to keep things constantly moving to keep up, which can make things harder to remember. Here are some of Lawler’s comments, with transcription courtesy of Wrestlinginc.com: On Modern WWE “Sometimes it’s sort of hard for me t..

Redditors Have Listed Their Worst Wrestling Commentary Calls And They’re So Bad

•

Speak to me. Commentary is such an important part of a wrestling show. The commentary team tells the fans where the stories are supposed to go while guiding them through everything that is going on. A good commentator can be such a help in wrestling, but sometimes even the best of them slip up in a pretty big way. When they screw up badly, it can be legendary. Wrestling fans have an amazing memory when it comes to commentary. A Reddit user recently asked What Are The Worst Commentary Calls Of All Time? Commentors weighed in and thousands of fans upvoted their favorite of the worst ideas from around the wrestling world. That’ll Put Some Bad Commentary On The Air IMG Credit: WWE For all of the great calls, there are some that are far more infamous for the wrong reasons. These are the lines that are not only remembered in a bad way, but often brought up as punchlines down the road. If it was something that made the commentator look like a pinhead, it can be even worse. That was the case..

There Is Another McMahon Getting Into Wrestling

•

They’re the new generation. There is something so easy to understand about a second generation wrestler. The name alone is going to be enough to give them a chance, but at the same time, they are going to have a bit more of an introduction to the wrestling world. It gives them a leg up, and now we are seeing someone else who has an even bigger foot forward. In a new interview with Alex McCarthy of TalkSport, Stephanie McMahon mentioned that her oldest daughter, Aurora Rose, has already begun in-ring training at age fifteen. In addition, McMahon’s youngest daughter, eleven, is interested in getting in the ring as well, but McMahon said she is more about the personality than the in-ring aspect. There is no word on who is handling the training. There are some great second generation stars. WWE Makes Odd Decision On Some Of Its Content

•

Lost in the shuffle? WWE has been shaken up a lot in recent months, though there are some changes that have flown a bit under the radar. One of the biggest has been the shift from the WWE Network to Peacock, which marked the end of a seven year run and started a new five year version. The content available has changed a bit, though now it seems that we might not be seeing some content for a long time. According to PWInsider.com, WWE has shelved several completed documentaries. This includes documentaries on a superfan named Vladimir, Lex Luger, Ric Flair and Money in the Bank. WWE advertised the Vladimir and Luger documentaries, with the former being mentioned as recently as September 11. There is no word on why WWE has chosen not to release them and nothing to suggest they will be released in the future. They’re interesting subjects. WWE Executive Boasts About Events Having….Bottled Water

•

Well that’s certainly something. WWE is the largest and most powerful wrestling company in the world and they have been for quite some time. They have their hands in so many different things in multiple industries but ultimately everything they do is centered around wrestling. Part of that includes live fans having a good time, but WWE seems to have an interesting take on what that might entail. Last week, WWE held an upfront session for advertises before the weekend’s Survivor Series event, according to Variety. One of the speakers was WWE’s Head of Global Sales and Partnerships Claudine Lilien, who spoke on how WWE permeates the culture in a variety of ways. Lilien said that “Whether it’s Bad Bunny or bottled water, WWE creates immersive experiences for our partners.” That’s quite the pairing. WWE Continues To Have Issues With Fans Harassing Wrestlers

•

What’s in the water up there? Fans are a crucial part of any wrestling show, which was certainly proven in the last year or so. It meant a lot to have the fans back in the building and WWE went out of their way to show what a bit deal it was. There can be some issues with having them back though, and one of those issues was on display this week. It just so happens that a similar situation took place off camera. One of the bigger stories to come out of this week’s Monday Night Raw was a fan attacking Seth Rollins. However, that was not the only instance of a fan being ejected. According to Alex McCarthy, a fan yelled at wrestlers during the post show dark match, with MVP and Sami Zayn not liking what he said. Security ultimately took the fan out of the building before the show ended. It is not clear what was said, though the fan was said to have been yelling at the Street Profits earlier in the night. I was there; this guy didn't get ejected. SP had a long commercial break before..

Several New Matches Set For NXT WarGames

•

The card grew. NXT has been completely changed over the last few months and you might not recognize quite a few of the people on the show at the moment. That can make for some very interesting changes and new directions, as a lot of what has worked before is gone. NXT is still trying to do something that they know work, and that will be the case again at WarGames. Now we know a lot more about what to expect. This week’s NXT saw three new matches added to WarGames, plus some gaps being filled in. The show’s main event was set, as the team of Tommaso Ciampa/Johnny Gargano/Pete Dunne/LA Knight will face Bron Breakker/Carmelo Hayes/Tony D’Angelo/Grayson Waller. The match is being set up as a battle between old school and new school, with Breakker making the announcement of the match to end the show. In addition, Kay Lee Ray has joined Raquel Gonzalez’s team in the women’s WarGames match to complete the eight woman field. In addition, a hair vs. hair match was set, with Cameron Grimes cha..

How WWE Has Changed Monday Night Raw Plans After A Surprise Release

•

There’s your replacement. WWE has had all kinds of changes taking place over the last few months, mainly in the form of wrestlers being released from the company. That can make for some major shifts in storylines, as the angles still have to continue. It seems that in one case, one wrestler was literally swapped out for another, but now we know how the original plans would have gone. This week on Monday Night Raw, Bianca Belair defeated Tamina. Following the match, Doudrop attacked Belair, who had referenced Doudrop before the match. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Doudrop is taking the place of Nia Jax, who was released earlier this year, in the storyline. This is also the explanation for Doudrop suddenly turning heel earlier this month. It was a busy night. NXT Date: November 23, 2021 Location: Capitol Wrestling Center, Orlando, Florida Commentators: Beth Phoenix, Vic Joseph, Wade Barrett It’s title time as we have a pretty big main event with North American Champion Carmelo Hayes defending against Johnny Gargano and Pete Dunne. NXT has a good history of setting up these title matches and then making them work, so hopefully they remember how to make it work. Let’s get to it. We open with Grayson Waller in the ring, talking about how great of an NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa really is. Longtime WWE Name And NXT Coach Released From WWE

Fare thee well. There are all kinds of stars in WWE, with some of them being bigger names than others. One of the more interesting things to see is how long some wrestlers last, as you might see someone unexpected slip underneath the radar. That can make for some surprises when you don’t realize just how long they have been around, which was the case with a name who is now gone with the company. Former WWE star and NXT coach Scotty 2 Hotty has requested and been granted his release from WWE. In a post on his Facebook page, Scotty said that he was leaving the company as he did not want to be doing something just for the paycheck. He also speaks about being thankful to WWE for allowing him to live his dreams for so long. Scotty has been an NXT coach since 2016. There is nothing to suggest any animosity between the two sides. 205 Live Results – November 19, 2021

•

205 Live Date: November 19, 2021 Location: Capitol Wrestling Center, Orlando, Florida Commentators: Nigel McGuinness, Vic Joseph It’s the go home show for Survivor Series, which has nothing to do with anything going on with this show. Instead, we’ll be getting more of the NXT B lineup, plus a battle of the midcarders. That doesn’t sound too bad, so maybe they can make it work out well enough again. Let’s get to it. Malik Blade vs. Edris Enofe This is Enofe’s debut. They go technical to start with Blade snapmaring him down for an early two, sending us into a standoff. Enofe rolls him up for two and that’s good for another standoff as they seem to respect each other. An exchange of rollups give them two each and it’s another standoff. Blade goes more traditional with a headlock on the mat but Enofe gives him a headlock takeover of his own. Back up and Blade hits a dropkick for one and the armbar goes on. Some armdrags have Enofe down again and a missile dropkick sets up…a missed frog s..
