Mutual respect. After Smackdown went off the air this past week, WWE shot and released some footage of Santos Escobar and Rey Mysterio backstage. They showed mutual respect for each other, as well as exchanged Lucha masks. He has defeated everyone in his path since then and as a result, has made history within WWE. According to various sources on Twitter, Gunther has now broken into the top 10 of longest-reigning Intercontinental Champions in WWE history. Furthermore, he is just over 200 days away from breaking the all time record. Also, as of this week, Gunther has had the longest Intercontinental Title reign of the last 18 years, surpassing Cody Rhodes’ 234-day reign from 2011. They will always be Dem Boys. Tonight’s episode of AEW Dynamite featured a tribute to Jay Briscoe, as his brother Mark, made his AEW debut against their longtime friend and rival, Jay Lethal. This tribute match came just over a week after Jay Briscoe passed away in a car accident at the age of 38. Ironically, the show also happened to be taking place on what would have been Jay’s 39th birthday. The finish of the match came when Mark Briscoe connected with The Froggy Bow through the timekeeper’s table. He then rolled Lethal into the ring, and after a series of maneuvers, Briscoe planted Lethal with The Jay Driller to pick up the victory. Following the match, the entire AEW locker room came on stage and gave a round of applause to both competitors. Several of them also hugged Lethal as he came up to the top of the entrance ramp. Since it is the Christmas season, the main event is a Miracle On 34th Street Fight as Ricochet and Braun Strowman vs. Imperium, but we also have a gauntlet match for a future Women’s Title match. Another one for the history books. This past Sunday at NXT Deadline, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods captured the NXT tag team championships by defeating Pretty Deadly. While this was a great moment for The New Day, this championship victory was also historic in a number of ways. As a result of their victory, Kingston broke the record for the most tag team championships in WWE history with 15. The previous record was held by Booker T, who had 14 championship reigns. After months of speculation, MJF won the AEW World Championship on Saturday night at AEW Full Gear. Since his return, MJF has been pushed as an emerging babyface with a “clean victory’ over Jon Moxely being a point of pride for his character. However, William Regal slid his own brass knuckles to MJF for him to take another shortcut to the richest prize in AEW. An angle that had been heavily foreshadowed on AEW television for weeks, especially since the MJF/Regal confrontation promo. While the swerve of the storyline was obvious, the fun of the situation is the questions that the AEW fanbase is asking about what happens next. He could work. Roman Reigns has dominated WWE for over two years now, with one of the longest World Title reigns in company history. Reigns has run through just about everyone that has come in his path, which has not left him with many opponents left to come after him. WWE is going to need to look in a different direction to find a challenger and now someone is calling out Reigns. Reigns successfully defended his Undisputed WWE Championship against Logan Paul in the main event of Crown Jewel over the weekend. He found a new home. The rise of AEW has done a lot for the wrestling world, but it has also done something very important for the fans. By offering wrestlers a new place to go, WWE is no longer the only major game in town. Even then though, there are other promotions with very lucrative broadcasting deals of their own. Now a former WWE and AEW star is heading to one of them. Impact Wrestling held its annual Victory Road event this week. During the show, former AEW and WWE star Bobby Fish appeared and, after referencing his issues with CM Punk, said he wanted a fight. Raj Singh and Mahabali Shera interrupted and were beaten up by Fish. This marks Fish’s debut with Impact Wrestling, following his AEW contract expiring and making him a free agent. Welcome back. With so many wrestlers around the industry today, it can mean a lot to have one of them show up again. For one reason or another, a wrestler might be gone from their promotion, some of which might not be for the best reasons. That can make for a very nice return, which was the case again this week, as an injured star made his surprise return in a pretty big spot. Orange Cassidy made an onAEW television this week. Following a victory over Dax Harwood, Will Ospreay and the United Empire came to the ring. Harwood’s partner Cash Wheeler and the Best Friends ran in for a beatdown. This brought out Cassidy, who stared down Ospreay. Later in the show, a match between them was set for Forbidden Door on June 26. It’s the risk you take. You never know when you are going to see a wrestler get injured. It can happen to anyone at any time and that is never a good thing to see. Wrestling is a physical sport and that means there is always the chance that someone could go down at any given time. That seems to be the case again at an NXT event, as a wrestler seems to have gotten hurt. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Tony D’Angelo was injured at the NXT live event in Largo, Florida. D’Angelo’s match against Cameron Grimes was stopped due to a shoulder injury with Grimes being awarded the victory. He deserved it. AEW had one of the biggest nights in its history over the weekend with its fourth annual Double Or Nothing event. The show was a star studded card, capped off by CM Punk defeating Hangman Page in the show’s main event. The title change was the only one on the show and felt like an important moment. It turns out that the night wasn’t over just yet. Following the end of the show, Punk grabbed a microphone and thanked the fans for coming to the show and their support over the years. FTR came to the ring to celebrate with Punk, who talked about how the fans helped make them the best in the world. Punk also thanked his wife, AJ Lee, and was put on FTR’s shoulders to celebrate to officially end the show and the night. It can be something about what they do or the way they talk but you know what you are going to be getting sooner or later. That is the case in WWE today, and now one of those wrestlers with this much potential has actually accomplished something. This week on Monday Night Raw, Theory defeated Finn Balor to become the United States Champion. The win marks Theory’s first championship in WWE and comes after he has been deems Vince McMahon’s newest protege. Theory debuted on the main roster in October 2021 and has been paired with McMahon since November of last year. The victory ends Balor’s title reign at 49 days.
