It’s an interesting choice. It had been previously reported that Rey Mysterio will be given the ultimate honor within WWE, and become a member of the WWE Hall of Fame, Class of 2023. But who will be the one to induct Mysterio? According to a report from Dave Meltzer, former WCW superstar Konnan will do the honors of bringing Mysterio into the Hall of Fame. From Wrestling News: Konnan was the most obvious choice because they have been close for decades, dating back to Rey and Konnan’s early days in the wrestling business. This might be Konnan’s first appearance at a major WWE event. Konnan wrestled briefly as Max Moon on non-televised matches in 1992 but those matches never aired and he left the company before the character debuted on TV with Paul Diamond playing the role. Konnan will be inducting Rey into the Hall of Fame. Rey asked for him and the company approved it. As noted last night, to me it was the only choice. — Dave Meltzer (@davemeltzerWON) March 11, 2023 Editor’s Opin..
Maybe not? Vince McMahon’s return to WWE has shaken up just about everything in the company. McMahon is back to negotiate a sale of the company and that is going to chance the company’s future in a big way. At the same time, the question has become what else McMahon will be doing. This week we saw some speculation about just that, but it might have been jumping the gun. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: He’s Done: Wrestling Legend Goes A Step Further To Prove His Retirement Earlier this week, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful sent out a tweet saying that a WWE talent had said they “believed” McMahon had returned to the WWE creative team, though this was never confirmed. Sapp sent out another tweet later in the day, saying that other sources have said that the original statement was “unfounded”. WWE has been adamant about the fact that McMahon has no intentions of returning to WWE creative and is only interested in selling the company. This week, a WWE talent reached out and told me they believed Vinc..
And that’s that. Retirement is a tricky subject in wrestling as you never know when someone is going to hang up their gear for good. While you will often hear about someone being done with wrestling, the question becomes whether or not they actually mean it for good. Now another legend is making it clear that his career is over and is doing something to prove it. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: He’s Back: AEW Star Returning To Action After 8+ Month Hiatus Last month, WWE Hall Of Famer Booker T. made a surprise appearance in the Royal Rumble, entering the show’s namesake match and being eliminated in about 45 seconds. He has since announced that he will not be wrestling again, saying that would be his last appearance in the ring. During a recent edition of his Hall Of Fame podcast, Booker reiterated that he was done and announced that he was selling his reing gear on eBay. Booker, 57 years old, said that the walk to the ring at the Royal Rumble “blew” him and he knew he was done. Booker has h..
That would have been different. Women’s wrestling has come a very long way in just a few years and the upgrades have been quite the improvement. Rather than having women’s wrestling as little more than filler on a show, it has since become some of the more important material in all of WWE. That is still the case to this day, though there was quite the change in what we saw this week. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: WWE Teases Huge WrestleMania 39 Showdown This week on Monday Night Raw, Becky Lynch announced her intentions of challenging Damage Ctrl for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles. Lita then came to the ring and was announced as Lynch’s partner for the title match coming next week. According to Fightful Select, WWE Hall Of Famer Trish Stratus was backstage at the show and was expected to be revealed as Lynch’s partner. The decision to use Lita was described as a “creative change” and Stratus left the arena before the segment aired. There is no word o if Stratus will appear on WWE TV..
That’s a step forward. Wrestlers have to deal with a lot of issues during their careers, but some of those problems do not go away once they retire from the ring. Several health issues can continue, including some that might happen to anyone at any time. Now a wrestling legend is dealing with some serious health problems, but things might be looking a bit better. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Another Happy Return? Controversial WWE Star Discussed For Possible Royal Rumble Return Earlier this month, it was announced that WWE Hall Of Famer Superstar Billy Graham had been hospitalized due to an infection, which had caused his heart to start. Graham was brought back and has improved in the time since. On Wednesday, Graham’s wife announced that Graham will soon be moved to a skilled nursing facility for rehab and physical therapy. He will also continue IV antibiotics for “a long time”. There is no word on how long Graham will be in the new facility. Graham was a heck of a star. Check out some o..
They have plans. We are in the middle of a whirlwind time for WWE, as the company seems likely to be sold off in the near future. That is the kind of change that could have all kinds of ramifications and there is no telling of how widespread they could be. In the middle of all that though, there is the question of when it could happen. Now we might have a better answer. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: They Don’t Approve: Backstage Reaction And More On Rumored WWE Sale According to Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE is hoping to have the company sold by the middle of the year, though there is no word on who the buyer will be. There are several options in the running, including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Earlier this week, WWE CEO Nick Khan met with Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger and ESPN CEO Jimmy Pitaro. Another possible buyer is Endeavor, the parent company of the UFC. Those are some interesting options but there may be a surprise. Check out some WWE surprises: [This post contains video, ..
There’s more to it. We are in the middle of a huge time of change in WWE and there are likely a lot more changes coming in the near future. This includes changes all the way at the top of the company, as WWE has been teasing a sale in recent weeks. That seemed to be the case earlier this week, but it seems to have been a false alarm. Now we know a bit more about the backstage reaction to what is going on. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Only Room For One: Former WWE Superstar Accused Of Trying To Get Wrestlers Fired Earlier this week, a rumor surfaced saying that WWE had been sold to Saudi Arabia, though the story seems to not be true. Fightful Select has more on the fallout from the rumor, including WWE sources saying no sale to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has been made “as of yet”. As for the roster, several have said they would walk out if the PIF purchased the company. There are also wrestlers who are worried about Vince McMahon returning to WWE Creative, with some believ..
NXT Date: December 27, 2022 Location: Capitol Wrestling Center, Orlando, Florida Commentators: Booker T., Vic Joseph We’re taped again this week to close out the year. With about five weeks to go before Vengeance Day, there is quite a bit of time to fill and some of that will have to be covered tonight. This week’s show will feature a North American Title match, as Wes Lee defends against Tony D’Angelo. Let’s get to it. Julius Creed is ready to prove a point against JD McDonagh, even if Brutus Creed ate all of the green bean casserole. JD McDonagh is glad that the holidays are over so people don’t have to pretend they like their families anymore. Julius Creed vs. JD McDonagh Julius’ brother Brutus is here. Feeling out process to start, though McDonagh claims a pull of the hair. They fight over arm control until Julius bounces off the rope to armdrag him outside. That means a drop onto the announcers’ table but McDonagh is back up with a posting as we take a break. Back with Julius..
That could have been interesting. Throughout its history, wrestling has drawn athletes from other sports into its ranks. It makes sense, as wrestling needs to keep its rosters fresh and bringing in other sports’ stars can help make the process easier. In recent years, mixed martial arts has served as a pipeline to wrestling, with several stars coming from the sport. Now a new story is being told about how an MMA fighter/wrestler almost had to prove himself. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Here’s Looking At You: Wrestling Fans React To Roman Reigns Breaking The Fourth Wall Back at Crown Jewel 2019, world boxing champion Tyson Fury made his in-ring wrestling debut, defeating Braun Strowman via countout. Brock Lesnar was also on the show, where he defeated former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez to retain the WWE Title. During a 2019 interview with Fury’s brother Tommy, IFL TV host Kugan Cassius revealed that one of Tyson’s corner men nearly got in a backstage fight with Lesnar. The corn..
He’s done. Retirement is a tricky subject for wrestlers as it can be hard to hang up their boots for the final time. While more mainstream athletes have to complete one more season, wrestlers are able to go out and have one more match at almost anytime they want. That makes officially retiring harder than it seems, but one legend seems pretty sure he is out. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: He’s Still Got It: John Cena Proves His Drawing Power In WWE During a recent appearance on the Culture State podcast, WWE Hall Of Famer Shawn Michaels was asked if he would be coming out of retirement for one more match. Michaels flat out said that he was done, saying “I’ve had that final match” and that he was happy with his career and wanted to see the next generation get their chance. Michaels, 57 years old, last wrestled at Crown Jewel 2018, ending an eight year retirement. He now runs the NXT developmental program for WWE. Michaels had an amazing career. He’s kind of a big deal. There are certain stars who have reached the very top level in WWE history. You do not get to see very many wrestlers become the face of the company, but those who are have become household names in WWE. Now one of the stars is making a special return for what seems to be one night only, but he is already making one heck of an impact. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Try Again: Former World Champion Likely Making WWE Return In January Last week on SmackDown, a match was announced for the December 30 episode, featuring Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn teaming up to face Kevin Owens and John Cena. This will mark Cena’s first match with the company since Summerslam 2021 last August. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, the show, set for the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, has sold an additional 4,000 tickets since Cena was announced. There is no word on how many tickets had been sold before the Cena announcement. Cena is certainly a star. Check out what happens when he comes..
That’s a lot. Wrestlers can do a lot of things to improve their standing in a promotion and, in theory at least, make more money. That is the kind of thing that can be rather tricky as wrestlers have to figure out what fans want and then act accordingly. Now another wrestler is doing just that, and it seems to be going incredibly well, even if it has nothing to do with wrestling whatsoever. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Not Him: WWE Pulls Hall Of Famer From ECW Tribute Show Last week, WWE released Mandy Rose, reportedly over a series of controversial photos and videos Rose released on her FanTime subscription site. According to TMZ Sports, Rose has made $500,000 since being released, which could double as soon as Christmas Day on Sunday. They want to make some adjustments. WWE is a major wrestling promotion and that is partially due to the kinds of adjustments they occasionally make. Sometimes something is not going right and a change is needed. That can make some of their ideas better, which is what they seem to be doing again, as WWE has debuted a new match type and already thinks it needs some tweaking. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Well Who Hasn’t: How Vince McMahon Spent $30,000 On Worms Last weekend, WWE presented its first ever WarGames match at Survivor Series, with a men’s and women’s edition taking place on the same show. During an interview with Kevin Owens on After The Bell, WWE broadcaster Corey Graves revealed that WWE was already discussing how to improve WarGames. The weekly pre-Monday Night Raw meeting focused on how great the matches were, but also on how to improve them. There is no word on any changes that might be made or when the match will be held again. WarGames was a big deal. Check out what we saw..
That’s an improvement. While they are not always credited as such, wrestlers are very talented athletes who regularly get in the ring and put their bodies on the line. There are always going to be risks involved with wrestling and some of the problems do not show up until after a wrestler’s career is over. That is the case with an all time legend, but things might be doing a bit better. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: To The Other Side: WWE Twitter Fans Gush Over Possible Upcoming Heel Turn Earlier this year, reports began to surface that Hulk Hogan was undergoing health issues, mainly related to his back. During a recent edition of his To Be The Man podcast, Ric Flair revealed that he had been in contact with Hogan, whose back is said to be doing much better. Hogan still regularly appears at his Florida beach shops and in commercials for the stores. These are two legends. Check out what the two of them can do on their own and together: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post..
That’s an upgrade. WWE has been going through a lot of changes this year and by far the biggest has been the change over from Vince McMahon to the new regime, mainly headed by Triple H. Things have gone in a new direction in the months since McMahon retired, and now we know a bit more about how much of an impact the change has had backstage in the company. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Welcome Back? Controversial 43 Year Old Former Star Working Backstage At Survivor Series A new report by Fightful Select has more details on how the backstage atmosphere has changed since McMahon retired. According to the report, the locker room’s morale has greatly improved under the new regime, as things are seen as much more easygoing with less worry about being in trouble or fired over something out of your control. While some wrestlers are still not being used, their situations have improved, including with wrestlers having more creative input. This comes after what was seen as a creative low point for ..
Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over ten years now and have reviewed over 5,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net, starting today. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Survivor Series 1990 Date: November 22, 1990 Location: Hartford Civic Center, Hartford, Connecticut Attendance: 16,000 Commentators: Gorilla Monsoon, Roddy Piper This is a somewhat different show that in recent years as we have a main event of sorts. It was never tried again and that’s probably the best idea. It’s called the Grand Finale Match of Survival in which the survivors of each team meet in one final Survivor Series match. The winners get absolutely nothing, which continues to prove that these..
NXT LVL Up Date: November 4, 2022 Location: Capitol Wrestling Center, Orlando, Florida Commentators: Sudu Shah, Matt Camp It’s a pay per view weekend and that means a grand total of very little on this show as Crown Jewel has no connection to NXT. LVL Up doesn’t have much to offer most weeks but maybe we can get in a nice match to take up some of the time. The show is usually at least decent so let’s get to it. Opening sequence. Ivy Nile vs. Sol Ruca The fans approve of Nile as she works on the wristlock to start. Ruca trips her down and Nile actually grins a bit, only to have it cut off by Ruca’s headlock takeover. Nile is back up with a sunset flip but a jumpless X Factor gives Ruca two. A rather muscular deadlift suplex gets two on Nile but she is back with an armbar in the corner. The arm is fine enough to hit a side slam and a flipping splash connects on Nile in the corner. Nile isn’t having that and suplexes her over, setting up the Diamond Chain Lock (dragon sleeper) for the ..
Welcome back! There have been a lot of stars to come through the WWE’s doors over the years and it can be quite a moment when someone leaves. There are some departures that can shake up the company, while others leave without getting to prove themselves well enough. Occasionally those stars will get to make a return and that is the case again with a long departed star. Emma made a surprise return this week on SmackDown, marking her first appearance with the company in just under five years. Emma answered Ronda Rousey’s open challenge for a SmackDown Women’s Title shot, ultimately losing via submission. This was Emma’s first appearance for WWE since October 2017. She previously wrestled in WWE and NXT from 2012-2017 and has stayed on the independent circuit since, plus a stint in Impact Wrestling. Opinion: I’m glad to see Emma back as she is someone who could be put into the middle of the card to fill in a spot. She has the talent and charisma needed to be interesting and I could go f..
