We have some sad news to report today as Lanny Poffo, who was known as “The Genius” in WWE has passed away at the age of 68. From WWE.com: The son of Angelo Poffo and younger brother of WWE Hall of Famer “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Lanny Poffo had a style all his own. Arriving in WWE in 1985 alongside his brother, “Leaping” Lanny Poffo was one of the first high-flyers in WWE. While he achieved some success as a fan favorite reading his own poetry and throwing Frisbees to the crowd, he reached new heights as The Genius while managing Mr. Perfect. Lanny had the honor of inducting his brother into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2015. You can see a clip of that below: [This post contains video, click to play] Hacksaw Jim Duggan also reported this news; he did so on his Instagram account: With a very, very heavy heart, I’ve been asked to let everyone know about the passing of our friend and colleague Lanny Poffo, The Genius. Honor and tradition. Gunther has been the WWE Intercontinental Champion since June 10, 2022, when he defeated Ricochet to win the title. He has defeated everyone in his path since then and as a result, has made history within WWE. According to various sources on Twitter, Gunther has now broken into the top 10 of longest-reigning Intercontinental Champions in WWE history. Furthermore, he is just over 200 days away from breaking the all time record. Also, as of this week, Gunther has had the longest Intercontinental Title reign of the last 18 years, surpassing Cody Rhodes’ 234-day reign from 2011. That’s a big step. The saddest wrestling story of the year so far has been the passing of Jay Briscoe, who was killed in a car crash earlier this week. Briscoe’s death was horrible enough, but on top of that, his two daughters were severely injured as well. Now though there is an update on their conditions and in this case, it is something much more positive for a change. Josh Wharton, a family friend of the Briscoes, uploaded a live stream on Friday with an update on Briscoe’s daughters. Gracie, 12 years old, regained movement in her lower limbs for the first time since the accident. She has also been removed from her IV medication and is recovering. Jayleigh, 9 years old, is now in a back brace and should be able to recover from her injuries over the next several weeks. The hospital had hoped that her NG tube could be removed on Saturday, allowing her to eat and drink as normal. Here is something a bit easier to take. Check out the Briscoes could do in the ring: [This post contain..
That could have been horrible. There are all kinds of people in the wrestling industry but at the same time they all have to deal with the same kind of things that non-wrestling people do as well. Some of those things can be terrible and incredibly difficult to face, including all kinds of tragedies. That is the case with one wrestling legend and some of his comments scared his fans so much that police got involved. Earlier this week on his Kliq This podcast, Kevin Nash spoke about his son passing away twelve weeks ago. This included Nash talking about how “time flies when you got a gun in your mouth” and how he can do “whatever the f*** I wanna do. Long as I leave a note.” According to TMZ, this caused the Volusia County Sheriff’s office to do a wellness check on Nash. The office said that Nash seemed to be ok. Nash mentioned the situation on Twitter, saying that he was being sarcastic and using it as a coping mechanism. He also thanked fans for their worries. Nash had a heck of a c..
That wouldn’t have worked. The wrestling world was rocked this week by the shocking death of Jay Briscoe at age 38 in a car accident. The news broke on Tuesday and since then, all kinds of tributes and memories have been posted online by wrestlers and wrestling fans. Thankfully something like this does not happen often, but it turns out that it caused a big change to a wrestling show as well. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Switch: Two AEW Stars Turn Heel On Dynamite According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful.com, Briscoe’s death caused a planned segment on this week’s NXT to be changed. The original plans called for Pretty Deadly to hold a funeral for New Day, but the news of Briscoe’s passing caused New Day and WWE executive Shawn Michaels to scrap the idea. In addition, Michaels made the call for commentator Vic Joseph to mention Briscoe during the broadcast. There was a planned NXT segment tonight where New Day would hold a "funeral" for Pretty Deadly's title shot. When word of Jay Bri..
A serious situation. Wrestlers portray either heroes or villains in the ring, but that does not mean that they are the same way when the cameras stop rolling. You never know what you might be seeing behind the scenes, but every now and then, a glimpse comes through. Now we can see something else from a former wrestler in a serious situation and it is not the nicest thing. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Upgrade: Road Dogg Explains Changes Coming To NXT Call-Up System Back in August, former NXT star Velveteen Dream was arrested in Orlando, Florida on charges of first degree battery and trespassing. TMZ has released video of Dream being arrested outside of an Orlando fitness center. The video shows Dream yelling at the officers, asking for his phone to call his lawyer and repeating that he had not been read his rights. The case was later dropped with the alleged victim did not wish to press charges. This is a rough sit. Check out the arrest footage: [This post contains video, click to play] ..
That’s a special tribute. There have been a lot of wrestlers to come and go throughout the years and unfortunately some of them are no longer here. That could be due to a variety of reasons but so many of them have left before they should have. Other wrestlers will remember them quite fondly and that is what Randy Orton is doing with a departed former WWE star. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Bianca Belair Has Her Eye On Very Specific Film Role Earlier this week, a fan posted a photo to Twitter showing presumable himself posing with Randy Orton and Umaga. Orton responded, thanking the fan for posting the picture and saying we are coming up on the anniversary of Umaga’s passing. He called Umaga the “OG head of the table” and also mentioned Matty Anoa’i (Rosey). Orton also said “So many memories. Too many brothers lost”. Umaga passed away on December 4, 2009 at 36. I’m very happy you posted this pic. I’ll save it. Anniversary is coming up where we lost the Samoan Bulldozer. I wish I was..
We have some very sad news to report today as Kevin Nash’s son, Tristen, has tragically passed away at the age of 26. Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful reported the news and issued the following statement: “On behalf of Kevin and Tamara Nash, I have to unfortunately report that their son Tristen Nash has tragically passed away at the age of 26. Tristen recently started working on Kevin’s new podcast and the two enjoyed their time together. The Nash family asks if you could please respect their privacy during this time.” Very unfortunate news to share. Sending love to the family of Tristen Nash. pic.twitter.com/VIj0dLqjcV — Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful.com (@SeanRossSapp) October 20, 2022 Nash has recently began a podcast called Kliq This, co-hosted by Sean Oliver. Oliver had the following to say about Tristen’s passing: “I met a great young man this year named Tristen. He worked with me and his dad on a podcast we have, and proved to be smart, sweet, savvy, witty, and mature beyond his me..
He was a special one. There are all kinds of wrestlers throughout history but only a small handful reach that highest level. Some people completely change an industry and take part of it in a new direction and unfortunately we have lost another one of those few names. Now the wrestling world is reacting by pouring out the tributes and condolences that you might have expected. On Friday, news broke of Antonio Inoki’s passing at the age of 79. The news was mentioned during this week’s SmackDown, with Michael Cole talking about some of Inoki’s accomplishments in the ring. Since then, several wrestlers and wrestling personalities have paid tribute to Inoki on Twitter. Here are some of the reactions to the news of Inoki’s passing: One of the most important figures in the history of our business, and a man who embodied the term “fighting spirit.” The legacy of WWE Hall of Famer Antonio Inoki will live on forever. — Triple H (@TripleH) October 1, 2022 RIP Antonio Inoki, a pioneer in the p..
That’s a good step forward. Wrestlers are larger than life characters who are regularly on television doing things that no one else would ever do in regular life. That can make for some rather interesting moments, though that is not the end of what happens to them. There are several things that take place after the cameras stop rolling and now a former wrestler is getting some good news in his personal life. Last month, Patrick Clark, better known as Velveteen Dream, was arrested twice in the span of a week on various charges. However, according to PWInsider.com, the August 20 charges of First Degree Battery and Trespassing have been closed, as a hearing scheduled for September 28 has been canceled. Court records cited a lack of evidence in dropping the charges. Clark was recently released from a 25 day jail sentence for a probation violation stemming from the August 20 charges. Opinion: That is some good news for Clark, but he still has more than enough legal issues to worry about. ..
I picked a heck of a week to do a column in advance last week because everything went haywire. Ignoring the whole Jeff Hardy fiasco (which seems like something that is far from over), there was the crazy shakeup at WWE. There were changed made in the last week or so that would have seemed unthinkable not so long ago but now have come to be a reality. That’s what we are going to be looking at this week (shocking I know), plus one bit of fallout that might make things all the worse, at least for fans. So as you probably know, WWE is officially investigating Vince McMahon and John Laurinaitis for an affair with a WWE employee. McMahon reportedly paid to keep her quiet, as well as raised her salary when the affair began before passing her to Laurinaitis “like a toy”. I’ll let your skin crawl for a bit after that thought before moving on to what this has already meant. The initial fallout from these shenanigans has already started, with McMahon taking a step back from his roles as CEO and..
That’s a heck of a class. One of the things that you will constantly hear from veteran wrestlers is the importance of passing down knowledge to the new generation. At some point, these wrestlers have to tell the new crop of stars how to do all of this stuff and that is not something you often see. You could see it now in a pretty big place though, if the teachers would let you that is. According to Alex McCarthy of TalkSPORT, AEW’s William Regal and Bryan Danielson will get in the ring every Wednesday morning at television tapings and teach/work with younger wrestlers. Phones are not allowed but all wrestlers are welcome to attend and participate. Ricky Starks has confirmed that the sessions take place and says that Regal and Danielson regularly engage with him. Regal says he and Bryan Danielson arrive at AEW TVs and from 11am get in the ring to work/teach. No phones allowed. All the young talent are welcome to get in with them. Ricky Starks confirmed to me he's seen them workin..
