Another one for the history books. This past Sunday at NXT Deadline, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods captured the NXT tag team championships by defeating Pretty Deadly. While this was a great moment for The New Day, this championship victory was also historic in a number of ways. As a result of their victory, Kingston broke the record for the most tag team championships in WWE history with 15. The previous record was held by Booker T, who had 14 championship reigns. Kofi Kingston has now officially broken the record for most tag-title reigns in @WWE history. There might be a future in it. Women’s wrestling has come a long way in the last few years, to the point there there is little left that women have not done in WWE. From headlining WrestleMania to having their own Royal Rumble, women have done quite a few things in the company, but now they might be able to do something that they have only done once before a few years back. According to Xero News, WWE has discussed the possibility of holding another Evolution event. The original event took place in 2018 and featured a card comprised solely of women’s matches. However, the show is not considered “priority” and would only be held in summer to late 2023. There is no word on when or where the card could take place or what could be included. Evolution 2 has been spoke about but right now is not considered "priority". If it goes ahead will be summer or late 2023 — Xero News (@NewsXero) October 12, 2022 Opinion: This is something that could work well if WWE goes in that direction, but it..
Let the planning begin. Today WWE announced that Wrestlemania 40 will take place on April 6 and 7, 2024 at Lincoln Field in Philadelphia. The announcement was made by Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau and PHL Sports. From WWE.com: “We are proud to welcome WWE fans from around the world to Philadelphia to be a part of the historic 40th WrestleMania in 2024,” said Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney. “The week-long series of events will help put a global spotlight on our great city while also generating a major impact for our local economy.” “Philadelphia is excited to host WrestleMania for the first time in 25 years,” said Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau President & CEO Gregg Caren. “The combination of Philadelphia’s passionate fans joining forces with WWE’s worldwide fan base will create an incredible electricity throughout the city for the events at Lincoln Financial Field, Wells Fargo Center, and the Penns..
Join the club. We are in an interesting year when it comes to wrestling milestones. The year 2022 marks 20 years since the WWE debuts of people like John Cena, Rey Mysterio, Randy Orton, Brock Lesnar, Batista and more. That alone is enough to make the year historic, but at the same time are some other milestones that go back even further in history. WWE might be looking to celebrate something else. According to PWInsider.com, the September 23 SmackDown will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah. This will be one day after twenty five years to the day of Goldberg’s WCW debut on September 22, 1997, also in Salt Lake City. It is currently not clear if WWE is planning to do something to commemorate the event. Goldberg has not wrestle for WWE since February of this year. Opinion: I can see this one going either way, as WWE certainly loves presenting Goldberg as a major star, but at the same time, it would come a bit out of nowhere. Unless WWE is wanting to do something to set up another Goldber..
Smackdown Date: June 10, 2022 Location: Raising Cane’s River Center Arena, Baton Rouge, Louisiana Commentators: Michael Cole, Pat McAfee It’s officially Money In The Bank season and that means we need to have some qualifying matches. Maybe they can even play the theme song fourteen times. Other than that, we might get to hear about something related to Roman Reigns wrestling again sometime in the future. But probably not. Let’s get to it. Commentary hypes up tonight’s historic show. Money In The Bank Qualifying Match: Sheamus vs. Drew McIntyre In the back, McIntyre throws Butch around and says he’ll see Sheamus out there. They hit each other hard to start with McIntyre getting the better of it off some chops. A Michinoku Driver gives Drew two but Sheamus sends him to the apron for the forearms to the chest. That’s reversed so Drew can hit his own, only to have Butch offer a distraction. Something like White Noise on the apron drops McIntyre and we take a break. Back with Sheamus hi..
There is a first time for everything. There are all kinds of wrestling moves in a match but only a handful of them are among the most well known. Many of these best known moves are finishing moves that wrestlers have turned into their signature offense. Those moves often signal the end of the match, but that is not always the case. It wasn’t the case this weekend, and it was kind of an historic moment. During Night One of WrestleMania 38, Drew McIntyre defeated Happy Corbin. At one point in the match, Corbin hit McIntyre with his End of Days finisher but McIntyre kicked out. This is the first time that anyone had ever kicked out of the move, making it one of the longest protected finishers in WWE history. Corbin debuted on the main roster on the night after WrestleMania 32, one day shy of six years ago, during which no one had kicked out of the move. Opinion: This is the kind of thing that kind of sneaks up on you and that can be rather interesting. Sometimes you don’t realize just h..
That’s quite the honor. Wrestlers are known for winning championships, but one of the problems is that eventually most of those championships are lost. A wrestler is known as a former champion, but that is not exactly the same thing as continuing to hold a title. There are some titles that last forever though, and now a WWE star has won another one of those, albeit in a different kind of wrestling. WWE’s Gable Steveson has won the Danny Hodge Trophy, given to the NCAA’s top wrestler. Steveson becomes the first heavyweight to win the awards twice, having won it last season as well. He also won the NCAA Heavyweight Championship for the second year in a row and is expected to make his WWE debut at some point in the near future, having signed with the company after winning an Olympic gold medal last year. Congratulations to @GableSteveson on back-to-back Dan Hodge Trophy wins becoming the first heavyweight to win the award multiple times! pic.twitter.com/dyM70fAZQW — WWE (@WWE) March 28,..
Maybe he’s up next. Titles are one of the easiest concepts to understand in wrestling. Someone has a championship belt and someone else wants it. That is all you need to carry a feud in a lot of cases and that is certainly the case in WWE. These feuds can be set up in a variety of ways and that might have happened again with one of the most historically important titles in WWE history. Last week on SmackDown, WWE Intercontinental Champion Ricochet was defeated by both members of Los Lotharios, setting up a title match on next week’s show. Over the weekend, Xavier Woods tweeted that he would win the title later in the year. Ricochet responded to Woods, saying that after he gets done with Los Lotharios, he would be glad to “smack you up”. Woods defeated Ricochet in the first round of the 2021 King of the Ring, which Ricochet referenced in his response. While not confirmed, this could suggest that Woods will be a future challenger for the title. Back to settle a score, then it’s time to..
We have some sad news to report today as former WWE referee Mickie Jay Henson has passed away at the age of 59 due to complications from pneumonia, related to COVID-19. From WWE.com: Henson officiated his first match in 1987 at the Eddie Graham Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida. He then joined WCW in 1992 and went on to referee in some of the promotion’s most memorable matches, including the ending of Goldberg’s historic undefeated streak at the hands of Kevin Nash at Starrcade 1998. Signing with WWE in 2005, Henson then brought his officiating expertise to more incredible bouts for years to come featuring the likes of John Cena, Kurt Angle, The Undertaker, Edge, and many more. We at Wrestling Rumors extended our deepest condolences to the Henson family during this difficult time. “GET EXCLUSIVE UPDATES! It’s their turn. Starting back in 2018, WWE began going over to Saudi Arabia for multiple major events every year. These shows have been among the biggest of the year with one stacked card after another. Some of these matches have been less than memorable, but there have been some historic moments as well. A handful of them have involved women’s wrestling, and now they are going bigger than ever. WWE has announced that a women’s Elimination Chamber match will take place at Elimination Chamber on February 19. The match will consist of Rhea Ripley, Bianca Belair, Doudrop, Liv Morgan, Nikki ash and a mystery entrant, with the winner getting to challenge for the Raw Women’s Title at WrestleMania 38. There have been three women’s Elimination Chamber matches in history, with the first taking place in 2018. Opinion: This is something that isn’t exactly a surprise, but it is a bit of a surprise that it is taking place in Saudi Arabia. I’m curious to see what they are going to do in the match..
It was a historic match. The Women’s Revolution changed women’s wrestling in WWE for good and things have been moving forward since. However, WWE was far from the first promotion to treat women’s wrestling seriously, with Impact Wrestling being one of the leaders in the movement. The company still has some firsts to cover though, and one was checked off the list this weekend. On Saturday night at Impact Wrestling’s Hard To Kill, Tasha Steelz won the first ever Knockouts Ultimate X match. According to PWInsider.com, Jordynne Grace and Steelz were the two who mainly pushed for the match but did not know that it was coming until the match was announced on television. In addition, there were no major injuries reported from the match, though all six participants were said to be banged up. It was certainly a busy match. It’s always fun to see AEW back on pay per view as they really have figured out the formula. They know what they are doing with the whole thing and we should be in for another one this time around. The card is absolutely stacked from top to bottom and we could be in for one of the more historic moments in AEW’s history to date. Let’s get to it. Pre-Show: Hikaru Shida/Thunder Rosa vs. Jamie Hayter/Nyla Rose It’s a battle of four people who are still in the TBS Title tournament and I’ve heard worse reasons to have a pre-show tag match. There isn’t much else connecting these women and they haven’t interacted much on TV, but it should do rather well as a way to get things rolling for the evening. It isn’t like Shida and Rose don’t know each other so maybe they can have a good match through familiarity. This can be great: [This post contains video, click to play] I’ll go with Shida and Rosa to win here as there is little reason to go with having the popular wrestlers lose to open the ni..
Make it official. Tournaments are one of the easiest things in the world to explain because any fan can understand the concept. You take a bunch of people and put them into a bracket with the last person standing being the one who wins some kind of a prize. That is what we will be seeing starting next week, though this time it is going to be a little more historic than usual. This week’s SmackDown featured an announcement that both the King of the Ring and Queen’s Crown tournaments will begin next week on SmackDown. The tournaments finals are expected to be held on October 21 at Crown Jewel. This will be the first ever Queen’s Crown Tournament, while the King of the Ring was a regular event from 1993-2002 and has been held intermittently since then. The most recent edition was held in 2019. The tournament can mean a lot. They had a plan? WWE offers a lot of content at any given time and it can be overwhelming to say the least. One of the problems that this can cause is the lack of anything having a real impact. That makes it all the more important when you see something actually take place, which was the case this week. Now we know a little bit more about a fairly historic moment. This week on Monday Night Raw, Big E. cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to defeat Bobby Lashley and become the new WWE Champion. According to Fightful Select, WWE had planned for Big E. to successfully cash in his briefcase soon after he won it in the first place. WWE decided to make the change this weekend with Big E. learning of the decision on Monday. In addition, most of the roster stayed around to see the title change as Big E. is popular backstage. https://www.patreon.com/posts/tons-of-news-on-56246207 It really was a great moment. Check out how it went down and the fallout: [This post contains video, click ..
Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Evolution Date: October 28, 2018 Location: Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Uniondale, New York Commentators: Michael Cole, Renee Young, Beth Phoenix It’s time for another historical one with the first ever all female pay per view. This has been long in the making and the card is pretty close to being stacked, though at seven matches with four hours to fill, we could be in for something interesting. The only mystery isn’t so much what Stephanie McMahon will say but how long she’ll take to say it. Let’s get to it..
That’s the big one. Titles are one of the easiest concepts in all of professional wrestling. Any fan can get the idea of putting a championship on the line and seeing who walks out with the gold. A wrestler holding a title for a long time can make their title reign seem all the more important, especially when someone finally takes it from them. That was the case this weekend. Trevor Murdoch defeated Nick Aldis at the NWA 73rd Anniversary Show to become the new NWA World Heavyweight Champion for the first time in his career. In addition, Murdoch had put his career on the line in the match. Murdoch’s win ends Aldis’ second reign at 1043 days, which was more than double the longest reign with the title since 1999. Aldis’ reign was the sixth longest in the title’s history. It’s a big deal. Check out the new champ and a quick look at the historic title reign: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] ..
Things are shifting a bit. We are in the middle of a very transitional period for NXT and that could make for quite the different future. That means things are going to be moving around in a bunch of new directions. Some of those changes could be made with a big match, perhaps in the form of some title changes, which is what happened during this weekend’s Takeover. There were four title matches during NXT Takeover 36 and three of the titles changed hands. First up, Cameron Grimes defeated LA Knight to win the Million Dollar Title. Had Knight won, he would have gained Ted DiBiase as his manager. Next, Ilja Dragunov defeated Walter, ending Walter’s record 870 day reign. Finally, Samoa Joe defeated Karrion Kross to win the NXT Title for a record third time in the main event. One champion retained their title, with Raquel Gonzalez retaining the Women’s Title over Dakota Kai. It was a busy night.
