They have his attention. AEW has come into its own in recent years, offering wrestlers a new high level home outside of WWE. After decades of WWE dominating the wrestling landscape, there is a secondary option around. That does not mean everyone is going to want to stay there though, and now one of the biggest names in AEW might be signaling that it is time for a change. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WRESTLING RUMORS: SmackDown Star Reportedly Injured, #1 Contenders Match Possibly Impacted Over the last year, AEW World Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman has talked about “The Bidding War Of 2024”, when he will be a free agent, available to sign with WWE or re-sign with AEW. According to Fightful Select, a WWE talent said Friedman told them that he was “looking forward to being there in 2024”, meaning WWE. At the same time, the talent said that it should be taken with a grain of salt. Other talented have also said Friedman has made similar statements. There is no word on when Friedman’s AEW deal..
That would be a change. The biggest wrestling story of the year has been the return of Vince McMahon to WWE. McMahon has taken his former role as Chairman of the Board, with the reported goal of selling the company. This has led to the question of whether McMahon will return to the creative side of the company. Now we might know a little more about such a change. Earlier this week on Monday Night Raw, Brock Lesnar accepted MVP’s offer of a match against Omos at WrestleMania 39. The match would be a first time pairing as Lesnar and Omos have never faced each other. According to WrestleVotes on Twitter, the match was McMahon’s idea, who pushed it through and made it happen. WWE and its executives have consistently said that McMahon has no impact on the creative side of the company. I’m told the highly anticipated, very compelling (??) Brock Lesnar vs Omos WrestleMania matchup was the idea of one specific, powerful person who pushed it through. pic.twitter.com/VpcdEFsLzJ — WrestleVotes..
They aren’t done yet. WWE has a lot of television time in any given week and they often fill it with a good deal of action. That is the best way to advance storylines, but there is often more stuff that needs to be done after the show is over. You will occasionally see something take place after the show is over, which was the case this week as the violence continued after Monday Night Raw. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: What Could Have Been: Here Are WWE’s Original (And Different) John Cena WrestleMania Plans WWE has posted a video to its YouTube page showing Piper Niven attacking Candice LeRae after Monday Night Raw. LeRae was talking about how important her win over Niven had been and was being asked about Nikki Cross’ involvement when Niven attacked. Niven also told LeRae that she was coming for Cross. Cross’ distraction allowed LeRae to roll up Niven for the pin earlier in the night. Things got violent. Check out the attack, plus what led us here: [This post contains video, click to p..
What could have been. There are so many different ways to present a wrestler and some of them have been done many times over the years. A talented performer can make even the most overly done ideas work out well though and it can be interesting to see how they pull it off. Now we know what kind of plans WWE had for a second generation star before letting him go. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Young Fan Helps Seth Rollins In WWE Live Event Match Against Austin Theory Former WWE star Davey Boy Smith Jr. was interviewed by Fightful Select and spoke about his return to WWE in 2021, when he was signed and released in the same year without making a televised appeared. Smith Jr. said that his gimmick would have been the Stampede Stud and he would have worked on SmackDown. Vince McMahon told Smith that his appearance was impressive but Smith said getting into that kind of shape was “costly” for him. While Smith said he would return to WWE, it would only be for the money without his heart bein..
Maybe not? Vince McMahon’s return to WWE has shaken up just about everything in the company. McMahon is back to negotiate a sale of the company and that is going to chance the company’s future in a big way. At the same time, the question has become what else McMahon will be doing. This week we saw some speculation about just that, but it might have been jumping the gun. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: He’s Done: Wrestling Legend Goes A Step Further To Prove His Retirement Earlier this week, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful sent out a tweet saying that a WWE talent had said they “believed” McMahon had returned to the WWE creative team, though this was never confirmed. Sapp sent out another tweet later in the day, saying that other sources have said that the original statement was “unfounded”. WWE has been adamant about the fact that McMahon has no intentions of returning to WWE creative and is only interested in selling the company. This week, a WWE talent reached out and told me they believed Vinc..
He isn’t a fan. Over the last few years, AEW owner Tony Khan has gone from little more than a fan to one of the more important players in the wrestling world. Khan not only helped found AEW but has also purchased Ring Of Honor. That is the kind of move that almost never takes place in wrestling but Khan made it work. Khan also maintains quite the Twitter presence and it came up again this week. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: A Big One: WWE Reportedly Believes They Can Sign Kenny Omega This week on SmackDown, combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani made an appearance in the crowd, hyping up Sami Zayn’s speech later in the show. Khan mentioned the appearance on Twitter, calling Helwani “a fraud” and saying he was as legitimate of a reporter as AEW’s Tony Schiavone. Helwani responded later in the night, thanking Khan for watching and saying he “can’t wait for our next chat”. Helwani also told Schiavone not to listen to Khan. This comes after Khan appeared on Helwani’s show last year and refused ..
It might be a bit. Villains have a tricky job in wrestling, as they have to find a way to make the fans dislike them without being too good at what they do. One of the easiest ways is to take away something that the fans want, which could come in many forms. Occasionally it means having a wrestler not be around for one reason or another, which is what we are seeing again now. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Farewell? New Japan’s Jay White Signals He Is Ready For A New Era, Possible Move Last week on AEW Dynamite, Hook attacked Stokely Hathaway, allegedly injuring his arm in the process. As a result, Hathaway has been wearing a brace on his arm since the attack. This week, Hathaway was talking about wanting justice for the attack when he was told that Hook had been suspended, pending an investigation. There is no word on how long Hook will be missing from AEW TV. Hook is something different. Check out what he has done in AEW: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains vi..
That would have been different. There are several different ways to introduce a new wrestler and one of the most successful is to have them introduced as part of a wrestling family. It is an idea that has worked over the years and still does to this day. Now we are hearing a story about an idea that would have seen a wrestling family grow even larger than it already is. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: He’s Up: WWE And AEW Set For Likely Bidding War Over International Star Former WWE star Matt Morgan was a guest on Insight With Chris Van Vliet and revealed that he was going to be introduced as Kane’s brother Abel. During his time in OVW, then WWE’s developmental system, Morgan was told to wrestle in a mask to get him used to using one. There is no word on why WWE did not use Morgan in the role. Morgan also made it clear that this was not the same storyline as the Impostor Kane, which took place in 2006. Morgan is a talented big man. That has potential. Every so often, a wrestler will change from good to bad or vice versa. These changes can alter the course of their future as sometimes going to the other side is the right change for them. These changes can be exactly what a wrestler needs at times and we might have seen a big one for an up and coming star after this week’s SmackDown went off the air. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: To The Shelf: NXT Star Reveals Torn ACL, Surgery Scheduled For Next Week The main event of this week’s SmackDown was a fatal four way between Karrion Kross, Madcap Moss, Santos Escobar and Rey Mysterio. The match was the first time ever for two latter two to face off in an official match. Following the show, the two met in the locker room, with Escobar talking about how he wanted to take Rey’s legacy. Escobar said that while he still wants it, he also respect Mysterio, and presented him with his mask. Mysterio responded by saying Escobar had told him that story before and then presented Escobar..
They have an idea. We are less than two months away from WrestleMania 39 and that means WWE is starting to put together everything for the show. That can make for some tricky situations as the company starts coming up with the card. WWE needs to get as many big names on the show as possible and now they might have a way to bring three people onto the show at once. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Tread Carefully: Brock Lesnar Reportedly Faces Backstage Heat Over Royal Rumble Tirade According to WrestleVotes, WWE is considering a triple threat match for the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania, with Gunther defending against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre, though the match is NOT 100% confirmed so far. The three faced off multiple times during the Royal Rumble and McIntyre and Sheamus have been a regular tag team since the beginning of the year. The match is said to have supporters who want it near the top of the card. I’m told while not decided 100%, there are plans to feature an Intercontinenta..
It was a last second situation. The Royal Rumble is one of the most unique WWE events of the year and will feature more wrestlers than any other show of the year. With two Royal Rumble matches on a single night, there are going to be sixty wrestlers spread out over two matches. That can lead to some difficulties in finding enough people, and this year it took until the very last minute. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Ouch: Monday Night Raw Star Injured During Royal Rumble WWE Hall Of Famer Booker T. appeared in the men’s Royal Rumble event this year. He spoke about the match on his Hall Of Fame podcast, where he revealed that he was only told he was participating in the match during the Kickoff Show. Booker T. brought his gear with him and went to the ring cold, without having time to warm up. He joked that he would have won the match if he had time to get ready. Finally, he said that he was sore after the match, with his wife Sharmell having to walk on his back to get it in line again. Boo..
Smackdown Date: January 27, 2023 Location: Sames Auto Arena, Laredo, Texas Commentators: Wade Barrett, Michael Cole It’s the go home show for the Royal Rumble and that means we have some final pushes to make to get us to the big event. In this case, we are probably going to have some more names added to the Royal Rumbles, but there is also a Kevin Owens vs. Solo Sikoa match that will probably involve the Bloodline. Let’s get to it. We open with a recap of the Trial Of Sami Zayn from Raw. Roman Reigns told Sami Zayn to not be seen until the Royal Rumble. The Usos and Solo Sikoa arrive and Sami Zayn sneaks in to thank Jey for having his back. If Jey ever needs anything, let him know. Sami leaves. Opening sequence. Rey Mysterio vs. Karrion Kross Scarlett is here with Kross. Rey snaps off the hurricanrana to start but gets tossed over the top for his efforts. They switch places though and the sliding sunset flip sends Kross into the barricade as we take a break. Back with Rey fighting..
Maybe later. We are less than three months away from WrestleMania 39 and that means it is time to start hammering down the card for the show. With so many moving parts to the whole thing, WrestleMania can be very difficult to put together, but WWE does have some ideas in place. However, it seems that they may have known that one big match was not going to take place for some time. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Karrion Kross’ Very Odd Video With Wrestling Legend Earlier this week, a report came out that the Rock did not feel he could get in ring shape in time to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE may have known that Rock was not going to be able to do the match months ago. However, there is always a chance of a swerve, as Rock may have only told his real status to a few people. Those in WWE have reportedly said “it’s not looking good” for Rock to wrestle. There is nothing to suggest that Rock will be appearing on WWE TV anytime soon. Rock..
Not this time? We are rapidly approaching WrestleMania 39 and there are several questions about where things are going. One of the biggest questions is about the main event, which has been rumored as the Rock facing Roman Reigns for several months now. The story would make sense, but it all hinges on the Rock being available. Now we might have a better idea on the match’s status. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: The Firefly Fun House Returns On SmackDown A source has told the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the Rock does not feel he has enough time to get into ring shape for a main event match. Unless things change in the next few days, Rock will not be taking part in the match, though there is always the chance that he could change his mind. There is also the chance that the entire situation is a way to cover the fact that Rock has agreed to the match. Rock being back would be a big deal. No more? We are in the middle of a weird time in WWE, as all kinds of things continue to change. You never know what kind of thing is going to happen next at the moment, with most of the changes taking place behind the scenes. At the same time though, there are changes taking place with various storylines. Now we seem to have seen another big change, as WWE may have dropped something cold. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Who’s Up Next: New WWE Tournament Announced To Crown #1 Contenders This week on SmackDown, Bray Wyatt made an appearance and sat in the middle of the ring in his rocking chair. Wyatt used several of his old catchphrases, including calling himself the Eater of Worlds. He also said that HE is Uncle Howdy and told LA Knight to “run” at the Royal Rumble, in another of his former signature lines. There is no word on if this is a reset of Wyatt’s character or something that will be changed again in the weeks to come. This could go multiple ways. Check out Wyatt’s promo plus a look..
The boss has spoken. According to a report from Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, Triple H held a talent meeting before tonight’s episode of Smackdown. There, he and other WWE executives addressed a number of reports that have been circulating as of late. Triple H told everyone that Vince McMahon’s return to the company is to see whether or not they sell, and who they should sell to. He said this would not change the creative team or process. Furthermore, Triple H did say that he and Vince McMahon have conversations about creative, but Vince defers the final say to Triple H. It was also noted that Kevin Dunn spoke at the Smackdown talent meeting and had interesting things to say. Triple H led the talent meeting today in Green Bay. He told talent that Vince McMahon's return is to see whether or not they sell, and who they should sell to. He said this will not change the creative team or process. It got his attention. Wrestlers have to be in the ring quite a few times every week, many of which are not going to be seen by a majority of the fans. With several events taking place just in front of the live fans, wrestlers need to do something to keep things interesting, or at least entertaining. That is something that was done at one point between two legends, one of whom was not pleased. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: On The Market: Former NXT Star Free Agent, WWE And More Companies Interested During a recent edition of the Kurt Angle Show, Kurt Angle told a story of a match with the Undertaker in Japan. Following the match, Angle told Undertaker that they should hug, which Undertaker did. As they did, Angle kissed Undertaker on the lips, leaving Undertaker livid as Angle left. Undertaker said that it was a long flight home, with Angle saying that it was the only time he saw Undertaker laugh. This was a weird one. That’s not good. WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle recently told a story on his podcast on AdFreeShows.com, about how he almost drowned on a recent vacation to Florida. Angle said the following: “We went to Miami, Florida,” Angle said. “The temperature was 80 degrees. We spent so much time on the beach. They had a wonderful pool at the hotel. It was a blast. I actually took my kids jet skiing. My first kid that I put on the back for me to ride them because they’re too young to drive themselves, I put her on the back and we went out, and when I went to make a turn, I slowed down and stopped, I wanted to make a turn and I didn’t put the accelerator on when I was turning and we flipped over. We went into the ocean.” “Now, Thank God my daughter is like an Olympic-caliber swimmer. I even had the safety vest on me, but it wasn’t working. I was still sinking. I can’t swim. So I’m in trouble. I couldn’t get above water. I was going under. My daughter kept her composure. The jet ski got away from..
Let the bidding begin. According to a report from CNBC, WWE has hired JPMorgan to begin the process of selling the company. This is being reported following the news that Vince McMahon returned to the company yesterday. The report states that if a deal occurs, it would likely occur in the next three to six months. In addition, WWE plans to talk to potential buyers before it makes a decision on TV rights renewal agreements. McMahon had the following to stay in a statement: “My return will allow WWE, as well as any transaction counterparties, to engage in these processes knowing they will have the support of the controlling shareholder.” His return doesn’t affect current leadership as Stephanie, and former CAA agent Nick Khan are co-CEOs. However, it remains unclear what type of role, if any, Vince would want at WWE if he sold the company. WWE has told investors that his role is essential in “our ability to create popular characters and creative storylines.” Currently, Vince doesn’t h..
