They kind of gave it away. We are on the Road To WrestleMania 39 and that means there are a lot of questions that still need to be answered. One of the biggest is who will be defending the titles at the show, some of which are a bit harder to predict than others. Occasionally you will get a hint though and that might have happened regarding an upcoming title match. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Ouch: NXT Star Suffers Detached Retina During Attack Earlier This Week One of the advertised matches for next week’s Elimination Chamber event will see Austin Theory defending the United States Title in the show’s namesake structure. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Theory recently taped a television show, which will not air until March. During the show, Theory was carrying the United States Title. While not guaranteed, this suggests that Theory will either retain the title at Elimination Chamber, or have it in some way when the show airs. There is no guarantee that this will be the ca..
Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over ten years now and have reviewed over 5,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net, starting today. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Elimination Chamber 2019 Date: February 17, 2019 Location: Toyota Center, Houston, Texas Commentators: Michael Cole, Corey Graves, Renee Young, Tom Phillips, Percy Watson It’s the first of two stops on the Road to Wrestlemania and that means we’ll be seeing a big steel structure. In this case it’s for the WWE Championship and the inaugural WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles. The structure alone makes this a little more interesting and hopefully it’s good on top of that. Let’s get to it. Kickoff Show: Cruise..
That would be a fight. Wrestling is a unique sport as while it is presented as a legitimate fight, the finishes are pre-determined and the wrestlers are tasked with working together to make the match work as well as possible. However, there are also questions about who would win should these matches be legitimate contests. Now one legend is chiming in on who he thinks could beat a top WWE star. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Braun Strowman Gets Slapped Hard During WWE Dark Match During an interview with Wrestling Shoot Interviews, former WWE and WCW star the Barbarian was asked what would happen in a fight between Brock Lesnar and Haku. Barbarian said that he felt if the fight was structured with rules, Lesnar would win, but if it was a bar fight with no rules and both in their primes, Haku would be able to take Lesnar. Haku is often cited as the toughest wrestler in history, while Lesnar is a former UFC Heavyweight Champion and NCAA Heavyweight Wrestling Champion. These are some tal..
No more. There have been a lot of changes in WWE over this year and some of them are changes that will be felt for years to come. This starts at the top of the company, where a new power structure is in place. WWE has new leadership and that group is going to introduce policies of their own. One of the new changes might not be the most popular among the locker room. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WRESTLING RUMORS: Upcoming Plans For Ronda Rousey (Contains Possible SPOILERS) According to Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE is no longer giving out financial bonuses to its wrestlers. This includes bonuses for going to the Saudi Arabian shows or wrestling on a premium live event or anything else. While there may be some exceptions for top merchandise sellers like Roman Reigns, the majority of the roster is going to be making what their contract stipulates and nothing more. WWE has had some money situations before. Check out some of the more interesting ones: [This post contains video, click to play]..
Sharing knowledge is always good. AEW issued a press release earlier today, announcing expanded backstage roles for several of its current talent. The company also announced they are bringing in Madison Rayne to assist and coach their women’s division. From the press release: AEW CEO, GM and Head of Creative Tony Khan announced an expansion to AEW’s talent relations team with the promotions of key staff members including Sonjay Dutt, QT Marshall, Pat Buck and Tony Schiavone. In addition, Madison Rayne will join AEW as a coach in the women’s division. As AEW continues its meteoric rise, the expanded talent relations team will strengthen the infrastructure required to facilitate the development, health and safety of AEW’s outstanding roster. The following promotions and additions are effective immediately: Sonjay Dutt (Retesh Bhalla) has been promoted to Vice President of Production and Creative Coordination. In this role, he will coordinate communication of AEW storylines, liaise ..
That explains a bit. Every so often you see a wrestling performance that defies all logic and abilities, as you might not know how someone is able to do what they pull off in the ring. That was the case this weekend as a wrestler worked through one of the most gruesome injuries that you will likely remember for a very long time. Now we know a bit more about how it happened. At Hell In A Cell, Cody Rhodes defeated Seth Rollins in the show’s main event, which was held inside the show’s title structure. Rhodes wrestled the match despite having torn his pectoral muscle earlier in the week. According to Wrestlingnews.co, Rhodes was allowed to wrestle the match because he could not cause any more damage. However, some spots, including a moonsault, were removed from the match. The reasoning for why Cody was cleared to wrestle is because he can’t do more damage to his completely torn pec. There were some high risk spots (moonsault) that were scrapped from the match. #HIAC — Wrestling News (..
That’s a big shakeup. It takes a lot of people to work together to make WWE work. With so many things coming together to keep the company running smoothly, it means a lot to have the right people in the right places. When someone moves around in the higher corporate structure, it can be quite the shakeup throughout the company. That is the case again with some names you might recognize. Earlier this week, Stephanie McMahon announced that she will be stepping away from her position at WWE for the time being, though she is planning to return to her job in the future. According to Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics, WWE President Nick Khan will be taking over most of McMahon’s duties. Various business partners were told of the decision earlier in the day. Nick Khan will be taking over most of Stephanie McMahon's duties in her absence, according to multiple people at WWE. The trilogy will conclude. Tonight on Raw, it was announced that Cody Rhodes will do battle with Seth “Freakin” Rollins at the upcoming Hell in a Cell premium live event in a match of the same name. From WWE.com: After defeating Seth “Freakin” Rollins for a second straight time at WrestleMania Backlash, Cody Rhodes was ready to move on to the next challenge in pursuit of the ultimate prize, but The Visionary was not. Rollins stormed onto Monday Night Raw the following night to level a heinous attack on Rhodes and cost him a potential United States Championship victory. On the ensuing edition of the red brand, The American Nightmare delivered a message to his rival and set a Hell in a Cell Match showdown for their third encounter. With whatever mutual respect that was left between the two Superstars now thrown out the window, what destruction will Rhodes and Rollins wreak on one another inside the horrifying and brutal structure? Editor’s Opinion: You knew this was coming, but it ..
Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. That could have gone better. AEW has come a very long way in its short history and a lot of that is due to company President Tony Khan. Fans have been waiting a very long time for a huge wrestling fan with serious money to run their own promotion and now Khan is finally here to do just that. There are going to be some rocky points eventually though and that seems to be the case again. Former AEW star Big Swole discussed her time in the company during an episode of her Swole World podcast. Swole said that she left AEW at the end of November because her inner peace was being disturbed. Her heart was no longer in AEW and she felt that the company needed some more structure. This included wanting more time for women’s wrestling, saying that there was not enough television time to go around. Many wrestlers were getting short matches on Dark, which was not enough for some of them. She also mentioned that some wrestlers were not comfortable with writing their own material but there was no o..
That’s a great thing to see. Professional wrestlers have a bit of a rough schedule as they only have so much free time. Independent wrestlers are constantly going from one show to another, while WWE wrestlers have a more structured but still just as busy scheduled. It doesn’t leave much time for personal lives, but one wrestler got to do something pretty special this week. NXT United Kingdom Champion Ilja Dragunov has announced that he got married over the week. The wedding took place on Friday, with Dragunov saying that he was “completely fulfilled”. Dragunov won the United Kingdom Title from Walter earlier this year at NXT Takeover 36 in August and has gone on to defend it against the likes of A-Kid and Rampage Brown. 17.12.2021. Finally. Double history has been made! I think it would be a heck of an understatement to say that it can be difficult to keep track of a lot of wrestling history. Between the less than honest nature of wrestling in general, the incredibly long and detailed history and how there is little in the way of structure, records can be a bit confusing. Now we have some officially confirmed wrestling records. Guinness World Records has officially confirmed two WWE records, both of which took place at Survivor Series. First, Randy Orton broke Kane’s record for the most WWE pay per view matches at 177. Second, Natalya set a record for the most pay per view matches by a woman in WWE history, though there was no word on who held the record before her. WWE acknowledged Orton’s record on last week’s edition of Monday Night Raw. It was a big night. Check out the two in action at Survivor Series, plus some other WWE records: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play..
The viper strikes again. WWE has posted a new video to its YouTube channel in which they show the full match between Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton for the WWE Championship from Hell in a Cell 2020. The match was contested in the structure of the same name. You can see the match in its entirety below: [This post contains video, click to play] From WWE.com: Orton controlled the battlefield with his signature deliberate pace, carefully calculating every move. McIntyre found a way to rally with a series of belly-to-belly throws, including a third that sent Orton crashing into a table. But The Viper’s plotting didn’t relent, and he used bolt cutters to escape the cell and began scaling it moments later, challenging McIntyre to pursue him. That appeared to be Orton’s plan all along, as he retrieved a lead pipe atop the cage, though McIntyre ducked his wild swing to thwart this particular scheme. While climbing down, both men struck each other repeatedly while clinging to the cell. Un..
The rivalry continues with a virtual audience. WWE has posted a new video to their YouTube channel, where they show the full match between Bayley and Sasha Banks for the Smackdown Women’s Championship from Hell in a Cell 2020. The match was contested inside the structure of the same name. You can see the match in its entirety below: [This post contains video, click to play] From WWE.com: Bayley arrived with her trusty steel chair, but the most experienced Women’s Hell in a Cell competitor in WWE history pulled it from her grasp and tossed it out of the lowering cell, leaving The Role Model without her equalizer. The champion resorted to a different weapon, opting for a Kendo stick, though Banks avoided it, and it marked the first of many attacks with foreign objects. The Boss wedged Bayleyagainst the cell with a table, scaling it before delivering a spectacular Meteora. Banks was far from finished, as she deployed unique offense and later sent Bayley face-first into the chain lin..
The next generation? WWE has a rather unique structure among wrestling promotions as they have their own in-house developmental system which also happens to air on national television. As a result, fans have seen the developmental wrestlers in action before they are called up to the main roster and have seen just how good they are. That was the case with some names who appeared before this week’s television show. According to PWInsider.com, there were a pair of dark matches before this week’s WWE Smackdown Taping, both of which featured NXT stars. First up, Raquel Gonzalez defeated SmackDown’s Toni Storm. Second, the Viking Raiders defeated the Creed Brothers, who had their Diamond Mine graphics but did not have their manager Malcolm Bivens. There is no word on potential callups for any of the wrestlers. That’s an interesting group. Check out the NXT stars in action plus what went down on this week’s SmackDown: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, cl..
What might not be? AEW has changed the way the wrestling world works and it has been in a good way. After so many years of pure WWE dominance, there has been a change in that we now have two large promotions rather than just one. A lot of that as been due to how the company has been put together, but it seems that there are some changes. They just might not be as impactful as previously thought. Last week, news began to emerge that AEW’s Executive Vice Presidents (Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks) did not have as much authority as they had previously possessed, as Tony Khan had become the ultimate backstage authority. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, this has been the case since December 2019, though the Vice Presidents still have creative input, especially over their own angles and stories. Other top names such as Jon Moxley and Chris Jericho have input as well. No major changes have taken place in recent months, as the system is the same as it has been for nearly t..
It’s time to go EXTREME, but I don’t think anyone has told WWE about that part. This is Extreme Rules, and of the six (yes only six) matches announced so far, a grand total of one has anything beyond a standard match structure (at this point, triple threats are a way of life and hardly extreme, or even out of the ordinary. I’m sure a few more matches will be added, but it would be nice to have some stipulations added, just to spice things up a bit. Let’s get to it. Carmella vs. Liv Morgan We’ll get the least important one out of the way first. This is a feud that started when Carmella did her best Mandy Rose in NXT impression and suffered a face injury during a match with Morgan. That set a feud between Morgan and Carmella/Zelina Vega, the latter of whom defeated Morgan this week on Smackdown. Do you have any idea how far you’ve fallen when you’re losing to Vega? How it got started: [This post contains video, click to play] I’ll go with Morgan here, if nothing else because I can’t ..
Next one up? One of the most interesting wrestling stories of the last year and a half has been the massive exodus of wrestlers leaving WWE. Some of these moves have involved some big names, including former World Champions. That has changed the wrestling landscape and now it seems that we are getting ready to see another big name go on the free agent market. According to Fightful Select, former Universal Champion Kevin Owens’ WWE contract is set to expire in January. Owens announced that he had signed a five year deal with the company in May 2018, but the deal was restructured early last year. As a result, it will expire early next year instead of in May 2023. WWE is said to know that Owens’ deal is coming up and there is no word on what Owens plans to do in the future. You might need to enjoy him while he lasts. Check out Owens’ time in WWE: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: ..
The next step. There are several different levels to the WWE structure and you can see the path that a wrestler takes up through the ranks. You can often figure out how this is going to go, though NXT UK has added a new level to the ladder. Sometimes you will see a wrestler come from the United Kingdom and move up the ranks, which was the case again this weekend. Sunday at NXT Takeover 36, Raquel Gonzalez defeated Dakota Kai to retain the NXT Women’s Title. After the match, former NXT UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray appeared on the stage for a staredown with Gonzalez. While not confirmed, this would suggest that Ray has been moved to the NXT roster. Ray holds the record for the longest reign in the history of the NXT UK Women’s Title, having held the title for 649 days. This could be a big one. Check out the title match, plus what might be coming for Gonzalez and the title: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains vi..
