Already? Earlier this month, one of the longer running wrestling questions in recent months was answered, as Mercedes Mone, formerly known as Sasha Banks, made her debut with New Japan Pro Wrestling at Wrestle Kingdom 17. That seemed to be the end of things but also a new beginning. As it turns out, there might already be some issues with Mone and her new boss. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Steve Austin Works Does The Weather And Works The Drive Thru At Restaurant According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there might be some heat on Mone in New Japan and Stardom (New Japan’s sister promotion). Mone had been talking about how she wanted to face wrestlers from the Sendai Girls and Tokyo Joshi Pro promotions, both of which are seen as competition to Bushiroad (the parent company of New Japan and Stardom). While in Japan, Mone went to the Sendai Girls dojo but not the Stardom dojo. There is no word on what this could mean for Mone, or if she will be in any actual trouble. It has b..
The Boss is heading overseas. According to a report from PWInsider, Sasha Banks is expected to appear at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Wrestle Kingdom 17 event next month. It is unknown in what capacity she will be used, if at all, during the show. Banks has not wrestled since she and Naomi walked out on WWE before the May 16 episode of Raw. Both women were upset about the creative direction of their characters, and were subsequently stripped of the Women’s Tag Team Championships. From the report: Back in October, Varnado teased the idea of wrestling former WWE star KAIRI in STARDOM, which shares the same corporate owner as NJPW and recently did a crossover event with NJPW. Banks has been training at a number of places in recent months in the United States and Mexico. Banks recently made a number of trademark filings related to her given name as well as the terms Mercedes Mone’, Mone’ Talks, Bank Mone’, and Statement Maker under company name Soulnado, obviously preparing for her next m..
What could have been. There are all kinds of wrestlers in the world today but very few reach the top level of stardom. Occasionally you will see someone break through to the next level, but it is even rarer to see someone become an icon. Now we know what one of the biggest names in wrestling today almost did, which could have completely changed the wrestling world. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WRESTLING RUMOR: WWE Interested In Signing Second Generation Star During a recent edition of the Kurt Angle Show, Kurt Angle revealed that Brock Lesnar almost joined him in Impact Wrestling (TNA Wrestling at the time). Angle says that Lesnar called him after leaving WWE and asked what Angle was making there. Lesnar said that if the company would match that, he would come in. However, Impact Wrestling turned down the offer, saying they weren’t going to pay it. It is not clear when this took place, though Angle debuted in Impact Wrestling in September 2006 and Lesnar signed with the UFC in October 2007..
She’s #1! One of the most common things that you see among wrestling fans is a discussion of the best wrestlers. At one point or another, every fan has debated something about wrestling, often over who the best is at any given thing. You occasionally get something official, or in this case something close to it, as a wrestler has won a rather prestigious award. Pro Wrestling Illustrated has released its annual PWI Women’s 150, ranking the top 150 female wrestlers in the world over the period of October 1, 2021 – September 30, 2022. the award is based on a mixture of success, influence, in-ring ability, competition and more. The list has been released since 2008 and this is the first time that a woman from a non-North American promotion has ranked #1. Here is the top ten: 1. Syuri (Stardom) 2. Bianca Belair (WWE) 3. Thunder Rosa (AEW) 4. Becky Lynch (WWE) 5. Jade Cargill (AEW) 6. Jordynne Grace (Impact Wrestling) 7. Saya Kamitani (Stardom) 8. Charlotte Flair (WWE) 9. Starlight Kid (St..
So I had started another column this week but it wasn’t something I could really get behind. Given that it was about a tag team comprised of Jimmy Wang Yang and Shannon Moore in late 2007, there was only so much that I was going to be able to get out of it. I needed something else to talk about and then I saw something that caught my eye, but not in the best of ways. Last week, a fan complained about AEW only having one women’s match/segment. Dave Meltzer responded, asking if they were going to watch the pay per view tonight. What pay per view you ask? Well that would be a Stardom pay per view from Japan, which the fellow commenters pointed out over and over. They also pointed out that apparently the original fan, who said he cared about women’s wrestling, wasn’t a real fan because he didn’t know about Stardom. This is the kind of thing that drives me absolutely nuts as a fan because it is the most condescending, rude and flat out obnoxious kind of take that you can have. Rather than..
That would be a get. The rise of AEW has changed the way that wrestling works on the big stage. After about twenty years of no promotion being able to give WWE any kind of competition, AEW has come along and offers wrestlers a new place to showcase themselves on a fairly big stage. Some wrestlers have already made the move, but another might be making the move back. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, former AEW wrestler Bea Priestley is almost guaranteed to sign with WWE for its NXT UK show. Priestley recently finished her work in Japan and is currently a free agent who could sign and appear anywhere at any time. Her highest profile runs came with New Japan and Stardom, along with a run in AEW which was cut short due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Priestley has not yet officially signed with WWE. You might need to get to know her. Check out Priestley’s efforts in the ring: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] [This post c..
Don’t get ahead of yourselves in Japan. The outbreak of the Coronavirus has shake wrestling up in a way that no one has ever seen before. Things have gone from bad to horrible in a short amount of time in America but the problem started even earlier elsewhere. Some countries have been taking action against the virus for weeks now, but one country’s wrestling industry may be ready to start rebuilding. There are very few countries whose wrestling industries are near that of Japan’s. The country has a deep, rich history of wrestling with some of the most talented performers in the world, both past and present, regularly performing there. However, the wrestling industry has been hit hard by the virus, with several promotions halting events. That might not be the case much longer. According to 411mania.com, the DDT promotion ran a show in Japan with a live audience. Dragon Gate will be holding a show on March 22 and Stardom will hold a tournament on March 24. All fans will have their temp..
How has this not happened yet? John Cena is one of the biggest stars in the history of WWE and professional wrestling in general. He is now starting to follow in the footsteps of fellow superstar the Rock, who has taken over Hollywood. While Cena is far from that level of mainstream stardom, he might be in line for a spot in a movie that could boost his profile in a big way. According to Variety.com, Cena is up for a yet to be determined role in the upcoming Suicide Squad 2 film. The original movie was a huge box office success, grossing nearly $750 million in 2016. Cena would be joining returning star Margot Robbie and fellow newcomer Idris Elba, whose character has not yet been announced either. The movie, with or without Cena, will be released on August 6, 2021. Should he be in it, this would be Cena’s first role in a comic book movie. Cena is a Hollywood star but he’s still popping up in WWE. Check out his hilarious cameo at WrestleMania 35: [This post contains video, click to p..
Before the Mae Young Classic last year, a lot of potential names were rumored for the tournament. One of the biggest names was Io Shirai from Japan. Unfortunately, she was not available for the event and didn’t participate because of prior dates with Stardom. Despite not being able to compete in the tournament, there were still rumors about her signing with the company. However, it was reported that a heart issue during her pre-signing medical evaluation spooked WWE doctors and she was not signed as a result. Related: Why Did WWE Pass on Signing Top Japanese Star? It took some time, but it’s being reported by WrestlingNews.co that Io Shirai and WWE may be willing to resume negotiations to bring the Japanese superstar to the company like Asuka and Kairi Sane before her. Shirai recently dropped the Wonder of Stardom Title and a lot of people are taking that as a sign of a potential move to WWE very soon. Here’s a taste of what “Purple Thunder” is capable of doing inside the squared c..
Ring of Honor announcer Bobby Cruise was recently interviewed by Wrestling Epicenter's Interactive Wrestling Radio. You can see highlights below, and the full interview above. If ROH has followed UFC's model of making their show more mainstream to grow the audience: "I think so. I think that's accurate. I think that's fair. And, that is a good thing. The "mainstream" fans are WWE fans. You have other fans but you have mainstream fans that just watch strictly WWE. Bringing in Cody (Rhodes), Bully Ray, and bringing in the Hardy's last year... The more eyes that are on the product, the better. I think once people watch it, if they're into wrestling, they're going to be hooked, they're going to like it, and they're going to watch more!" Women of Honor finally being used on ROH TV: "Absolutely! Last year and the start of this year, with what WWE is doing and what we're doing with the Women of Honor and our work with STARDOM... It is a grea..
