That’s something special. There are all kinds of things that need to come together to make a wrestler a success. At or near the top of the list is the ability to talk, as it can make the fans care about you in a way that almost anything in the ring just cannot do. Being able to use the right words help, and now another WWE star is revealing a special privilege that she has when it comes to talking. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Oh No: Former Impact Wrestling Star Arrested For Violating Order of Protection Involving Wife During a new interview with Sports Media with Richard Deitsch, Monday Night Raw star Rhea Ripley revealed that she has some creative freedom with promos. While there are promos where she is required to say certain things to get points across and cannot change much, she has “free range” on backstage segments. Such freedom when it comes to promos are not common in WWE, with only a handful of wrestlers being granted such permission. Ripley is quite the star. Check out her rece..
Then it fell apart. Women’s wrestling in WWE has come a very long way in recent years, with the division reaching heights that are almost impossible to fathom. The rise has been led by a group of women who have become some of the top stars in WWE. However, not all of them get along as well as others and now we know a bit more about what caused a specific split. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WRESTLING RUMORS: Top WWE Stable Could Move In Upcoming Draft Jeff Dye, Becky Lynch’s ex-boyfriend and the co-host on Wrestling With Freddie, discussed the breakdown of her relationship with Charlotte on a recent edition of the show. According to Dye, the issues began to occur when the two women were feuding in 2018. The two would say things about each other in promos but then start to take the statements seriously. In addition, Dye said that Charlotte was having a difficult time accepting that Lynch was becoming the face of the women’s division. Lynch would go on to defeat Charlotte and Ronda Rousey in ..
Something out of nothing. There are all kinds of ways for a wrestler to make a connection with the crowd and one of the most effective is a catchphrase. Someone saying something that the fans instantly recognize is one of those things that will work almost every time. No matter what else is being said, you know who is speaking every time. Now we know a bit more about how one of the best known modern catchphrases came about. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Maybe Later? WWE Reportedly Canceled Battle Of Wrestling Families Vickie Guerrero was recently interviewed by Pro Wrestling Illustrated and spoke about the origin of her “Excuse Me” catchphrase. Guerrero explained that one night she was scheduled to do a promo but specifics were changed several times throughout the day. As a result, Guerrero was a bit shaken and as the fans began jeering her, she eventually yelled EXCUSE ME. The WWE writers continues using in it her promos and it became her catchphrase. Guerrero has done a lot over the year..
Welcome home. With so many wrestlers moving around in one way or another, it can mean a lot when a wrestler makes a surprise appearance on AEW television. Some of these appearances are telegraphed while others come as a surprise. Occasionally you get something in the middle, and that was the case this week as a group was back after a hiatus of a few months. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Farewell? AEW Star Says “Thank You”, “Bye” In Cryptic Post The House of Black returned this week on AEW Dynamite, making their first live appearance since All Out in September. The team appeared after Orange Cassidy defeated Jake Hager to retain the All-Atlantic Title. Following the match, Julia Hart appeared on stage with the team appearing behind the Best Friends and beating them up. The Factory, who had come to ringside as well, were beaten up too. This comes after a few weeks of House of Black return promos, promising their rebirth. The House Of Black is a force. Check out their path of destruction: [T..
Well that would be more. There are a lot of stars in wrestling but there are only a few who are such natural talents that it can be hard to believe they are that good. You see these people every now and then and they rarely disappoint. It can be amazing to watch these people rise through the ranks, and now one of them is going to have a huge rise in his bank account. The end of AEW All Out saw the surprise return of Maxwell Jacob Friedman. Before Friedman came back to the ring, a voicemail played with AEW President Tony Khan announcing that Friedman was receiving an upgrade in pay but no specifics were given. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the raise will possibly give Friedman more than a million dollars a year. Friedman did not have to sign an extension, meaning his contract still expires on January 1, 2024. Opinion: That is a heck of a raise and Friedman has certainly earned it. Friedman has gone from little more than a promising talker to one of the best promos in..
Get your scripts updated. WWE has been undergoing a variety of changes and some of them are going to be felt for a long time to come. Most of these changes have been behind the scenes, but a good many of those are going to have an impact on what happens in front of the camera. That seems to be the case again, as some longstanding rules might be relaxed a bit. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE is relaxing its rule on the use of the terms “wrestler” and “wrestling” in promos. Previously, the terms needed prior authorization to be used but now the terms are no longer considered dirty. This is said to be part of the changes taking place in WWE, many of which are seen as positives. Triple H is now in charge of both creative and talent relations and is said to be someone who cares about talent. Opinion: This is the kind of change that seems like the most logical idea in the world. At the end of the day, only WWE would ever think to call itself sports entertainment rather ..
Welcome to the new age. WWE is changing a lot in recent weeks and that is likely going to be the case for a long time to come. With so many different things taking place, the company is starting to shift away from what they have been doing for so many years. Some of those changes are things that fans have been wanting to see for a good while and one of those changes is already taking place. According to PWInsider.com, WWE has been allowing wrestlers to have a bit more freedom in their promos, including allowing them to improvise more. This has allowed them to be more creative than they have had in recent years. The freedom is also taking place in the ring, such as with Sheamus vs. Drew McIntyre from last week’s SmackDown. The match was called in the ring rather than being laid out in advance, which is said to have helped make it great. There is no word on if everyone will be given the same freedom. Opinion: That is some of the best WWE news that you will hear for a long time. A big p..
That could have been worse. Last weekend, AEW presented Forbidden Door, a show built around a series of matches between AEW and New Japan Pro Wrestling stars. The card was stacked with all kinds of talented stars, some of whom are among the biggest names in the world. That was the case with the main event, which was a hard hitting fight. It turns out that someone is not as banged up as it seems. The main event of Forbidden Door saw Jon Moxley defeat Hiroshi Tanahashi to become the new Interim AEW World Champion. Following the show, Moxley addressed the crowd and said that he was “probably concussed”. However, according to Wrestling Observer Radio, the statement was not true and is something Moxley likes to say in promos after big matches. Moxley does not have a concussion and is not believed to be injured in any way. Opinion: After all of the injuries that AEW has dealt with in recent weeks, it is nice to see someone actually not being hurt for a chance. Moxley said something and got..
Change the marquee. There are all kinds of wrestling shows from WWE every week and some of them are among the most well know shows in history. Some of them are not so much though, as WWE has a lot of shows that tend to fly under the radar. That is the case with their two weekly recap shows, and now one of them is going to be getting a brand new name. WWE has officially renamed their weekly SmackDown recap show from Talking Smack to the SmackDown Lowdown. The name change officially took place this week with the first show under the new name taking place on June 18. There is no word on why the name change took place and there is nothing to suggest that the show has changed in any significant way under the new name. Opinion: That’s one of those decisions that WWE makes that doesn’t mean much of anything but is indeed a change. I still don’t know why the recap shows aren’t used a bit better. Let the wrestlers try their hand at some promos and see who can make them work. It’s one of the s..
It’s long overdue. There are certain times when you see a pair of wrestlers who seem like they are a perfect fit. It might be them facing off or teaming together, but it can make for some fascinating moments when they finally make it happen. This can be all the more common in modern wrestling with different promotions around the world and that was the case again this weekend. Over the weekend, WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart managed FTR at a Big Time Wrestling event in Webster, Massachusetts. The match saw FTR defeat Brian Pillman Jr. and Brock Anderson, who had Brock’s father Arn in their corner. This comes as FTR has been paying tribute to Hart, including indirectly referencing him in their promos. The show will be available on Fite TV at some point in the future. A celebratory tequila toast in Webster, Massachusetts with @BretHart and @DaxFTR after tonight’s wildly successful @BTWwrestling show. Be sure to catch the event on @fitetv – an announcement on when you can purchase and vie..
Put him down as not a fan. There are certain promos and interviews which resonate with fans for one reason or another. It might be the delivery, it might be the context and it might be what is being said, but sometimes it can be everything coming together. That was the case with a promo last week, but it seems that one wrestling legend was certainly not impressed. Last week on AEW Dynamite, Maxwell Jacob Friedman cut a promo bashing AEW President Tony Khan and the company as a whole. The promo followed Friedman no showing a scheduled meet and greet over Double Or Nothing weekend. During the latest edition of his Snake Pit podcast, Jake Roberts said that the promo “made me sick” and said the bomb that it dropped in the locker room will have repercussions. Opinion: I’m curious to see where this goes, but I am a bit more interested in the fact that Roberts, who works for AEW, is so curious to see how the locker room responds. Roberts is someone who has been around for a long time and kn..
Call it a hint? The rise of AEW has changed the wrestling world and that will be the case for a long time to come. With the new company now a very strong presence in the industry, both wrestling fans and the wrestlers themselves have a lot to look forward to. One of the most important things that AEW can offer is a place for wrestlers to appear, but te opposite might be true in this case. According to Fightful Select, Maxwell Jacob Friedman is reportedly “on edge” about his AEW contract status. Friedman and AEW President Tony Khan had an issue earlier in the year when Friedman was interviewed by Ariel Helwani without clearing it with AEW first. This led to a discussion between Khan and Friedman which seems to have soured their relationship. Friedman has referenced possibly leaving AEW when his contract expires in 2024 during on-camera promos, which are said to more than just in-character statements. Opinion: This is firmly in the category of “I’ll believe it when I see it”, as Friedm..
It’s a different kind of promo. Talking is one of the most import important parts of a wrestler’s presentation, as the fans need a reason to care about who they are seeing. Working in the ring is important, but you need to make the fans care, which is why promos can be so memorable. A good talker can mean a lot in wrestling, and now one of the more famous ones got to talk in another way. Wrestling personality Johnny Fairplay and promoter Ron Gossett appeared on the Judge Steve Harvey Show, with Fairplay attempting to college $5,000 in unpaid appearance fees. New WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner appeared as a surprise witness for Gossett, saying he had been paid in full for working on one of Gossett’s shows. Steiner also threatened to beat up Fairplay and offered to wrestle him for the money. Fairplay wound up winning the case and was awarded the fee. This is the second time wrestlers have appeared on the show, after JJ Dillon and Kevin Sullivan were on the show earlier this week. Ok, ..
Open the envelope. At some point or another, any and every wrestling fan has discussed the best and worst of wrestling with someone else. It might have been over the best wrestler, the best match, the best move or vice versa, but it is something that almost everyone does. Now it has happened again, with fans getting a way in who is officially the best. AEW announced its 2021 AEW Awards this weekend, with twelve awards being presented. The awards covered the best of AEW in 2021, including debuts, matches, promos, breakout stars and more. Fans were allowed to vote on the awards, with the winners being announced on a special streamed on AEW’s YouTube challel. Here is the full list of award winners: * Biggest Surprise: Adam Cole and Bryan Danielson’s Debut * Best Moment On The Mic: CM Punk Returns * Biggest WTF Moment: NYE Street Fight * Biggest Beatdown: Hangman Adam Page Goes 60 With Bryan Danielson * Best Twitter Follow: Nyla Rose * High Flyer: Dante Martin * Best AEW Fashion Moment: ..
That would be a big one. We are less than two months away from WrestleMania 38 and that means WWE is going to need to go all out to sell more tickets. With the two night event taking place at AT&T Stadium, the company has a pair of 100,000 seat shows to sell out. That means they are going to need something huge and a special attraction might be able to help them. It seems they have such a match in mind. Earlier this week, news broke that WWE was attempting to bring in Steve Austin for a match at WrestleMania 38 but not more details were given. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE is planning on Austin vs. Kevin Owens, which is why Owens has begun cutting promos insulting the state of Texas. Some backstage in WWE are speaking about the match as if it is already booked, though nothing has been confirmed so far. Austin last wrestled in 2003. Opinion: This is in the category of “I’ll believe it when I see it” as the idea of Austin coming back to the ring at 57 years old is almost h..
They’re good at that. Wrestlers have a difficult task, as they are asked to make fans believe what they are doing is real while also having a fully cooperative match. This is in addition to building up a character, which is often best done through promos and segments. Sometimes a wrestler makes it work very well, which is the case with some modern stars. However, some of them broke character for a rather nice reason recently. Jarrius Robertson, a WWE fan with a chronic live disease who has undergone two liver transplants, was in attendance at this week’s SmackDown. Various wrestlers acknowledged him throughout the night, including Roman Reigns, Big E. and Jimmy Uso, the latter of whom gave Robertson his shirt. Robertson is a longtime WWE fan and received the Warrior Award at the 2018 WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony. This was pretty awesome. Check out some of the WWE roster interacting with Robertson: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to ..
It isn’t something that everyone gets. WWE is still the biggest and most powerful wrestling company in the world today, but there are some things that are not the most popular among some fans. One such thing is the amount of releases that have taken place over the last few years. Now one of the released wrestlers has revealed something rather surprising about her time with the company. Former NXT star B-Fab took part in a virtual signing with K&S WrestleFest where she spoke about her time in WWE. One thing that B-Fab mentioned was she and the rest of her Hit Row stable had been granted total creative freedom by Triple H for everything they said, even down to their theme song. Triple H would occasionally try to keep their ideas from getting too big, but the promos and statements were all written by Hit Row themselves. B-Fab and the rest of Hit Row were all released from WWE in November, with B-Fab being let go separately from the rest of the team. Hit Row was pretty awesome in their t..
Since it’s NXT 2.0, this is pretty much a Takeover without being a Takeover. We still have the double WarGames matches, which have been set up about as well as can be expected. I’m not sure how the whole thing is going to go, but we could be in for a heck of a fight. That being said, NXT’s expectations have more or less plummeted in recent months so I wouldn’t quite get my hopes up as much. Let’s get to it. Cameron Grimes vs. Duke Hudson I like Grimes a lot and Hudson is slowly growing on me, but what is working for this match is Grimes’ talking over the last few weeks. Grimes has been cutting some old fashioned wrestling promos about Hudson taking away his hair and beard, which apparently meant a lot to him. That’s the kind of thing that has worked in wrestling for the better part of ever and it worked again to set up this hair vs. hair match. He got serious quick: [This post contains video, click to play] I’m not sure on this one, but I think I’ll take Grimes. If nothing else, we..
Fix it in post. There are a lot of things to criticize about WWE and one of their bigger issues seems to be promos. Wrestlers are often given scripted promos where they are unable to say things the way they want. You will see some people getting creative freedom, but either way, you will hear some strange things sneak through. That was the case this week, but now it has been cleaned up. This week’s edition of Monday Night Raw included a contract signing between Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch and Liv Morgan. During the segment, Morgan talked about how Lynch’s contract was the reason her friends were no longer in WWE. The line has been removed from WWE’s YouTube version of the promo. There is nothing to suggest that there is any backstage heat on Morgan for the promo. It was a heck of a speech. Check out the original version, the edited version and the missing wrestlers: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video..
