It’s a new way to go. According to a report from Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, the 2023 Royal Rumble event was said to have been the “easiest” that it’s has been in a long time, with regard to putting the show together. This is due to the lack of creative involvement from Vince McMahon. This year’s Royal Rumble was the first under Triple H and the report states that there was a good feeling about the show in the end, including the morale among talent. Furthermore, it was said that from a day-to-day and weekly basis, the atmosphere is much more laid back. One of the only reminders of Vince’s influence remains the “Vince’s office” directional sign that hasn’t been changed since he left but points to a section of the backstage area that is completely different. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Jericho himself came up with the idea for Andretti to defeat him. Jericho saw Andretti face QT Marshall on the October 11 edition of Dark and decided to help Andretti become a star. Those are going to take up the better part of an hour between the two of them, even though they’re just #1 contenders matches. Well that’s a turn. WWE has been running quite the mystery in recent weeks, but very little of it has been taking place on television. Instead, WWE has been doing more of an underground story, with incidents taking place at live events and a series of QR codes appearing on television, leading to more clues. There was another one this week and things got even weirder. A new QR code appeared this week on Monday Night Raw, taking you to a site that features a collection of WWE clips which comprise the words “Who killed the world? You did.” It also included coordinates for Prata Nevoso, Italy, the location of the Giant Pink Bunny. In addition, according to Ryan Satin, looking at the site’s source code shows the phrases “No man is ever truly good, no man is ever truly evil”. Not many people can say it. There are legends in wrestling and then there are all time greats, who are the biggest names in the history of the industry. Those are the people that you hear about for years after their careers are over, but occasionally they reach that top level while still active. That is technically still the case with an all time great, and now we are getting a special look back at what he has done. This December, Ric Flair will be celebrating 50 years in professional wrestling. As a result, Flair has released a video looking at his entire career, including a look at some of the highest points. Also included are clips of Flair in action every year he wrestled, beginning back in 1972 and going all the way through his final match in July of this year. Two for one. There are a lot of gimmick matches in WWE’s history, some of which are among the most iconic in wrestling. The company has held cage matches, Last Man Standing matches, Iron Man matches and several other kinds in between. WWE has covered all kinds of points throughout its history but now they are going into uncharted territory. In a new interview with the Ringer, Triple H has announced that WWE will present a men’s and women’s WarGames match at this year’s Survivor Series. No names have been announced for the matches. The match will end the tradition of a Monday Night Raw vs. SmackDown theme to the show. WWE has never run a WarGames match, though NXT has regularly held at least one a year, normally around the same time as Survivor Series. Wedding bells will soon be ringing! NXT superstar Mandy Rose recently announced her engagement to longtime boyfriend and former NXT superstar Tito Sabbatelli. So I had a column set up about the upcoming Summerslam title matches and how WWE doesn’t have much of a choice but to do a series of rematches. Odds are you’ll see that one in the future, but the wrestling world being turned upside down. After forty plus years of being in charge, Vince McMahon officially retired from WWE and has handed control over to his daughter Stephanie McMahon and Nick Khan. Yeah I think that might be a bit more important than anything happening at Summerslam with its big package of rematches (more on that later) This is the kind of thing that you always knew was going to happen at some point but it’s hard to actually believe it went down. Vince has been the force in WWE and the idea of anyone being in charge of the company is almost impossible to fathom. That’s not going to go well. WWE needs a lot of people behind the scenes to make a show work well. While the wrestlers are the focal points of the show, there are several people who work together to make the wrestlers look better. In WWE, these people are called producers, and now it seems that they are going to be doing a good bit more work for the foreseeable future. According to PWInsider.com, budget cuts in WWE have caused the company to not use as many producers. This includes Curtis Axel and Ariya Daivari not being brought in full time after a tryout that began just after WrestleMania 38. The producers had been hoping for more help to be brought in due to the amount of work needed in the job but budget cuts have prevented this from happening. As a result, the WWE producers are described as being “extremely overworked”. What could have been. There are a lot of wrestling events throughout the year but nothing really comes close to WrestleMania. Making it to WrestleMania is one of the highest points that a wrestler can achieve and it means a lot for them. Getting to be in a major spot on the show is an incredible moment for a wrestler’s career, but two legends almost got their spot cut down. During a recent edition of Talk Is Jericho, Chris Jericho talked about his WrestleMania 28 match against CM Punk for Punk’s WWE Title. The feud between the two involved Jericho attacking Punk and insulting his family, as well as pouring alcohol down his throat. This caused Vince McMahon to plan the match to last two minutes, with Punk getting disqualified for attacking Jericho, as McMahon thought would make sense. As a result, the match had a stipulation added where Punk would lose the title if he was disqualified. Punk would defeat Jericho at WrestleMania and then again in a street fight at Extreme Rules. A wrestling promotion can present an angle in all kinds of ways. It could be serious, funny, silly, dramatic or several other points in between. Oftentimes you will see some combination of two (or sometimes more) styles mixed together and it can make for some great moments. However, that is not the easiest thing to make work and it can be very easy to get it wrong. That seems to be the case again now, as WWE has gotten even further into the habits of getting stories more than a bit wrong. One of the most important things about presenting a story is to know your characters. While you can get a character to do just about anything, there has to be a path to make it work. This might be something from their past or present or even future, but you can’t just throw something out there and hope that it makes sense. If you are one of the focal points of WWE, it suggests that you are going to be a major player in the wrestling industry and that means your face is going to be seen in a lot of places. That was the case again this week and the face might have been a surprise. This weekend, the United States Football League returned after a nearly forty year absence. The broadcast of at least one game included an advertisement for WWE Monday Night Raw and SmackDown. While the SmackDown side of the graphic featured Roman Reigns, the Monday Night Raw side featured Cody Rhodes.
