It’s a Hall Of Fame thing. Wrestling has a history of working with celebrities and it has been a mixed bag over the years. There are several celebrities who are there for the sake of promoting their latest project and nothing more, while there are occasionally celebrities there for their love of wrestling (among other things). The latter was the case this week and a WWE legend got involved as a result. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Tag Team Splits On NXT In Mid-Match Betrayal Bad Bunny, who has worked with WWE multiple times in the past and is set to host this year’s Backlash, was a guest on the Late Late Show this week. During the interview, wrestling was brought up, resulting in Bunny bringing out Rey Mysterio. Host James Corden then faced Mysterio in a match, where he was quickly defeated. Mysterio is set to be inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame later this month. Kind of one sided. Check out the match (the wrestling portion begins at around 11:00), plus Bunny and Mysterio in WWE:..
It’s been a fun ride. AEW has come a long way since its inception and a lot of that has been due to the roster it has put together. The company has been built on a mixture of veterans, up and comers and legends, all of whom have mixed into quite the lineup. Not everyone can stick around forever though, and now it seems that one of the names that has been around for a long time is taking her leave. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Pick A Side: More On WWE Hoping To Sign AEW Wrestlers, AEW Looking To Do The Same? According to Fightful Select, Vickie Guerrero will be finishing up with AEW when he contract expires in July. There is nothing to suggest that there is any bad blood between the two sides and the decision was said to be mutual. Guerrero has been with AEW since April 2019 and has mainly worked as a manager, including for Nyla Rose and Marina Shafir. She has also worked on digital projects for the company. Guerrero has done a lot for AEW. Check out some of her time there: [This post con..
That would have been different. One of the most complicated aspects of wrestling is to make sure that the most important material is used at the right time. A promotion has to build things up over time and then pay it off when everything is ready. WWE is no exception, and now we know that they hit the brakes instead of letting someone make a special return. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Swap: Trish Stratus Reportedly At Monday Night Raw, Not Used As Planned According to Fightful Select, WWE had originally planned to bring back Finn Balor’s Demon persona at the Royal Rumble. The Demon would have fought Edge, possibly inside Hell In A Cell. However, due to Edge’s filming schedule, WWE went with the mixed tag instead. In addition, some people who were asked about the plans were unsure if the Demon would fit in with the current version of Balor. There is no word on if the Demon will return anytime soon. In case you forgot. Check out what the Demon is all about: [This post contains video, clic..
Long time in the making: We are on the way to Elimination Chamber, with the show taking place in less than two weeks. That does not leave long to build up the show, but the other problem is that the show’s namesake matches are going to take up twelve people from the roster. WWE is going to have to come up with something clever to fill in the card and now we know a bit more about the show. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: It’s Not Over: Two More SmackDown Stars Heading To Monday Night Raw Roster This week on Monday Night Raw, Edge and Beth Phoenix appeared and talked about wanting to finish the war with the Judgment Day once and for all. Phoenix issued a challenge for a mixed tag against Finn Balor and Rhea Ripley, who was not there, with Balor accepting. Phoenix and Edge have teamed together before, defeating the Miz and Maryse at the 2022 Royal Rumble. This should be good. Check out what is coming for the Judgment Day: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, c..
He’s not like everyone else. There is no one quite like Brock Lesnar in the history of professional wrestling. With his amateur skills, mixed martial arts training and pure strength, Lesnar is not someone who can be duplicated. WWE knows this and has presented him as one of the biggest stars in the company’s history. That does not mean Lesnar is immune to criticism though and now he is in a bit of hot water. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Blast From The Past: Cody Rhodes Hints At Bringing Back Winged Eagle WWE Title Lesnar took part in the Men’s Royal Rumble match last weekend but was eliminated by Bobby Lashley in less than three minutes. Following his elimination, Lesnar through the ring steps onto the announcers’ table and attacked a referee. According to Fightful Select, there was some heat on Lesnar over the reaction, as some of it was not planned. However, heat is said to be a subjective term for Lesnar, who is not expected to be in trouble over the incident. Lesnar has been on rampag..
That’s how you change things up. We are officially on the Road To WrestleMania 39 and that means it is time to bring back some of the bigger stars in WWE. What matters most is having the right people in the right place, which can be made easier if seeds have been planted earlier. That is the case with a returning star this weekend, as we might know where all of this is going. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Sami Zayn Turns On Roman Reigns At Royal Rumble During the men’s Royal Rumble, Edge returned and continued his feud with the Judgment Day. The team ultimately eliminated him though and Edge brawled with the up the aisle. Eventually Rhea Ripley appeared for a showdown with Edge, who would not hit her. This brought out Edge’s wife Beth Phoenix to go after Ripley with a spear. The incident comes after rumors of a mixed tag match at Elimination Chamber next month. This could be big. Check out what happened, plus Edge and Phoenix teaming together: [This post contains video, click to pl..
It’s that time of year. We are just over two weeks away from the Royal Rumble and that means it is time to start putting together the lineups for the show’s namesake matches. This includes thirty men and thirty women, which can make for quite the collection of talent in both. It also often means a bunch of returns and surprises, and this time we have an idea of who might be included. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Family Business: Update On Shane McMahon’s WWE Status, How Much He Was Paid In 2022 PWInsider.com is reporting a variety of names who could be returning at the Royal Rumble, though it is not specified if they will be in the Royal Rumble matches or just at the show in some way. First up, Edge and Beth Phoenix are expected for the show, likely to set up a mixed tag match against Finn Balor and Rhea Ripley at Elimination Chamber. Second, Doudrop has been discussed for a possible return. This comes after Doudrop revealed that she had recently gotten over an illness. Finally, Logan Paul..
Dynamite Date: January 4, 2023 Location: Climate Pledge Arena, Seattle, Washington Commentators: Tony Schiavone, Excalibur, Taz We’re in a new year and the big story is a new look for the show. That is somewhat long overdue and the question is will AEW have a good show to back it up. The likely main event is Samoa Joe defending the TNT Title against hometown boy Darby Allin in a rematch from a few weeks back. Let’s get to it. Opening sequence, with remixed themed song. There is a new set with new graphics. Chris Jericho vs. Ricky Starks Feeling out process to start with Starks slapping him in the face and pounding away in the corner. Starks does a rather length Old School but gets knocked to the apron. The triangle dropkick is broken up though and Jericho suplexes him off the apron as we take a break. Back with Starks hitting a running clothesline to leave both of them down. Starks grabs a sitout powerbomb for two, blocks the Codebreaker and hits a superkick for two. Jericho is ri..
That could have been interesting. Throughout its history, wrestling has drawn athletes from other sports into its ranks. It makes sense, as wrestling needs to keep its rosters fresh and bringing in other sports’ stars can help make the process easier. In recent years, mixed martial arts has served as a pipeline to wrestling, with several stars coming from the sport. Now a new story is being told about how an MMA fighter/wrestler almost had to prove himself. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Here’s Looking At You: Wrestling Fans React To Roman Reigns Breaking The Fourth Wall Back at Crown Jewel 2019, world boxing champion Tyson Fury made his in-ring wrestling debut, defeating Braun Strowman via countout. Brock Lesnar was also on the show, where he defeated former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez to retain the WWE Title. During a 2019 interview with Fury’s brother Tommy, IFL TV host Kugan Cassius revealed that one of Tyson’s corner men nearly got in a backstage fight with Lesnar. The corn..
It’s a different world. Wrestlers have a difficult time in being seen as legitimate athletes. They have to do some very athletic things and their efforts are anything but easy. At the same time though, it can be difficult to shake the stigma of their matches being pre-determined. Occasionally a wrestler will try their hand at another sport though, which was the case again this week. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WRESTLING RUMORS: WWE Discusses Brock Lesnar Intercontinental Title Reign Former WWE star Jack Claffey, better known as Jack Gallagher, competed in his professional MMA debut this weekend. Claffey fought Marlon Jones at FCC 32 and was defeated via TKO in the first round, with the event airing on UFC Fight Pass. Claffey posted a photo of himself and Jones following the fight. Following the end of his wrestling career, Claffey has competed in bare knuckle boxing and amateur mixed martial arts, compiling a 1-0 and 2-0 record respectively. You might remember him. The next steps. There are very few wrestlers in WWE with the star power of Ronda Rousey. She is still one of the biggest names in the history of mixed martial arts and is presented as one of the top stars in WWE. It means something for a wrestler to feud with her as it is a special opportunity. Now we have a better idea of what is next for her, including her likely next challenger. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Add Him Up: Another Former World Champion Reportedly Returning To WWE Last month, Rousey and Shayna Baszler attacked Raquel Rodriguez, resulting in her being written off WWE TV with a broken arm and dislocated elbow. However, according to Wrestlingnews.co, Rodriguez is expected to be the challenger for Rousey’s SmackDown Women’s Title at the Royal Rumble on January 28. In addition, Rousey is expected to go into WrestleMania 39 as champion, meaning that even if Rodriguez wins the title, she is not expected to hold it very long. That could be good. Check out the two in action and how ..
It’s a different way to go. There are all kinds of ways to make a wrestler stand and sometimes a promotion needs to do something different to shake it up. Occasionally you will see a wrestler get something changed up to offer a new presentation. That was the case again this week, as two wrestlers received a change each to freshen things up just a little bit. This week on Monday Night Raw, a wrestler’s theme song and another wrestler’s ring name were both changed. First up, Johnny Gargano came to the ring for a match with the Miz to a remixed version of his “Rebel Heart” theme, featuring a new vocalist and rift. Later in the show, Mia Yim’s name was changed to “Michin”, which she said means “crazy” in Korean. The name change has also been made official on WWE.com. ?? . Michin (Mee-chin). That’s an interesting take. There are a lot of different styles of wrestling, some of which can be on opposite sides of the spectrum. A wrestler might be a brawler, a grappler, a technician, a high flier or some combination of styles mixed together. You know one of the greats when you see one, but it turns out that one legend does not think so highly of another legendary name. During the latest edition of his Oh You Didn’t Know podcast, Road Dogg spoke about the Montreal Screwjob, featuring Bret Hart. Dogg said that he never got what the big deal was with Hart as a performer. While Dogg agreed that Hart was a much better wrestler, Dogg felt that he was a better sports entertainer than Hart and that he feels that is where the money is. Dogg went on to say that he did not mean any disrespect but he did not think Hart was that great of a wrestler. Here are some of the comments, with transcription courtesy of Wrestlingnews.co: On Hart’s abilities Compared To His Own “For me, personally,..
That’s a big compliment. There are very few wrestlers in history who have felt like true attractions but Brock Lesnar fits the mold. Lesnar is like almost no one else in wrestling and that has been the case for a long time now. It means a lot to be considered in the same breath as someone of that caliber, but now Lesnar may have become impressed by one of his fellow current stars. Brock Lesnar defeated Bobby Lashley in their match at Crown Jewel 2022. During a recent edition of After The Bell, Lesnar’s longtime associate Paul Heyman said he believed Lesnar now respects Lashley despite not doing so in the past. Heyman suggested that it was due to Lashley’s recent efforts, with Lesnar being left feeling that he had a fight on his hands with Lashley. Opinion: This is one of those strange levels of praise that you do not see very often as Lesnar is not someone who frequently goes positive. It makes sense as Lesnar and Lashley have several similarities, from amateur wrestling to mixed mar..
Maybe later? Wrestling has a long history of athletes from other sports coming in and trying their hands at something else. It has been hit and miss throughout history, with certain sports doing it better than others. Mixed martial arts has some of the better success, but now one of the more prominent fighters turned wrestlers seems to have have dropped wrestling, at least for the time being. Former UFC fighter Paige VanZant has appeared multiple times for AEW over the years, including wrestling a match at Double Or Nothing 2022. However, during an interview with K & S Wrestlefest, VanZant’s trainer Gangrel said that VanZant has stopped communicating with her. Gangrel says that VanZant wrote him and asked for some critiquing of her match but the stopped contacting him. He also said that while she was talented, she did not train as often as he would have liked. There is no word on if VanZant is training elsewhere or has stopped training for the time being. She has not appeared on AEW T..
He’ll pass for now. There are very few stars in the history of WWE who have become anything close to Brock Lesnar. Over the years, Lesnar has become one of the top attractions in modern WWE and it takes the right kind of opponent to give him a challenge. To make it more impressive, Lesnar was also a success in mixed martial arts, and it turns out that he turned down a fight there as well. Back in 2018, Lesnar seemed to be ready to set up a fight with fellow UFC heavyweight Daniel Cormier. However, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Lesnar turned down the idea of fighting Cormier for unknown reasons. Lesnar would eventually fight once more in the UFC before returning to WWE. Cormier made his WWE debut this weekend as the guest referee in the Fight Pit between Seth Rollins vs. Matt Riddle at Extreme Rules. There is nothing to suggest that Cormier will be returning to WWE in the future. Opinion: That’s kind of a weird way to go, as Lesnar vs. Cormier did seem set for a big ..
That should fix her. Injuries are terrible to see in wrestling as you never know when someone is going to be put on the shelf for any amount of time. That is something that cannot be prepared for and no one is immune to them. After someone gets hurt, the only thing left to do is wait for them to get back in the ring. Now an injured star is on the way back to health. Back at the All Out: Zero House show, Ruby Soho and Ortiz unsuccessfully challenged Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo for the AAA Mixed Tag Team Titles. During the match, Soho suffered a broke nose and has not wrestled since. Soho has posted an image to Twitter, suggesting that she has undergone surgery to repair the damage. She also said that she is on the way to being able to breathe again. There is no word on when she will be able to return to the ring. Finally! After a month since breaking my nose at All Out. The countdown begins until I can breathe again, can’t you see my excitement?! ? pic.twitter.com/AffnyQPonx — Ruby So..
They have a type. There are all kinds of wrestlers under the WWE banner and most of them come from a few select backgrounds. You can probably figure out some of the most common, with amateur wrestling, football and mixed martial arts being very prominent. That leaves off some of the most obvious, but WWE does still have their eyes pointed elsewhere. Shawn Michaels was recently interviewed by My San Antonio and revealed that NXT was still looking for both independent and Japanese wrestlers. Michaels said that nothing is off the table when it comes to finding new talent, which will continue to be the case in the future. This comes after reports that NXT was no longer looking for independent wrestlers but rather focusing on athletes that could be turned into wrestlers. Opinion: This is far from a surprise and something that is still nice to hear. What matters is that WWE is trying to look through the more traditional areas for future talent. I understand the idea of bringing in athletes..
And so it is set. Over the last few years, WWE has regularly traveled to Saudi Arabia for a series of shows. These events have received a mixed reaction to say the least but they certainly do get attention. WWE will present a unique selection of matches, often including names that do not appear for the company full time. Now they have a new main event set in a first time ever match. WWE held a press conference in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, officially announcing that Logan Paul will challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title in the main event of Crown Jewel on November 5. The match was set up over the course of the week, beginning with the two arguing on Twitter and leading up to a face to face segment between Paul and the Bloodline this week on SmackDown. This will be Paul’s first ever title shot. Opinion: The match was all but made this week on SmackDown so the press conference and official announcement were little more than a formality. Paul is certainly goin..
