They kind of gave it away. We are on the Road To WrestleMania 39 and that means there are a lot of questions that still need to be answered. One of the biggest is who will be defending the titles at the show, some of which are a bit harder to predict than others. Occasionally you will get a hint though and that might have happened regarding an upcoming title match. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Ouch: NXT Star Suffers Detached Retina During Attack Earlier This Week One of the advertised matches for next week’s Elimination Chamber event will see Austin Theory defending the United States Title in the show’s namesake structure. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Theory recently taped a television show, which will not air until March. During the show, Theory was carrying the United States Title. While not guaranteed, this suggests that Theory will either retain the title at Elimination Chamber, or have it in some way when the show airs. There is no guarantee that this will be the ca..
That makes it harder. There are all kinds of injuries that can take place in a wrestler’s career. You never know when you are going to see someone get hurt, but there are times where you do not know the injury has taken place. Sometimes there are ways to hide the injury, even if it is something that can slow a wrestler down. That is the case again, but you might not be able to tell. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: It’s A Start: Possible Backstage Heat On Mercedes Mone (Sasha Banks) In New Japan According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there were at least two injuries coming out of the Best Of Seven series between the Elite and Death Triangle for the AEW World Trios Titles. First, Pac broke his nose shortly into the series and had to wrestle with a protective mask on for the remainder of the matches. Second, Nick Jackson suffered a broken toe, which made it difficult to walk. Jackson is currently resting his toe and he can move it without pain. There is nothing to suggest either will mi..
Sometimes you need a new job. At tonight’s Impact Wrestling Hard to Kill pay-per-view event, Frankie Kazarian announced that he had signed a new, long-term contract with the promotion. Kazarian cut a promo during the show, stating that after wrestling from Impact, he had to decide whether to remain complacent and be with “people he thought were his friends” or push himself and he chose to push himself. According to a report from PWInsider, after his 40-minute match with Josh Alexander, Kazarian asked AEW to be released and it was granted. It was said to be a completely amicable situation based on Kazarian wanting to push himself harder as he’s getting closer to the latter point of his career. In Impact, he’d had a chance to be more in the mix than he’d likely be able to get the opportunity to do in AEW, given how massive that company’s roster is. It was said that Kazarian “did business the right way” and would be welcomed back into their locker room anytime. Editor’s Opinion: I ab..
He’s done. Retirement is a tricky subject for wrestlers as it can be hard to hang up their boots for the final time. While more mainstream athletes have to complete one more season, wrestlers are able to go out and have one more match at almost anytime they want. That makes officially retiring harder than it seems, but one legend seems pretty sure he is out. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: He’s Still Got It: John Cena Proves His Drawing Power In WWE During a recent appearance on the Culture State podcast, WWE Hall Of Famer Shawn Michaels was asked if he would be coming out of retirement for one more match. Michaels flat out said that he was done, saying “I’ve had that final match” and that he was happy with his career and wanted to see the next generation get their chance. Michaels, 57 years old, last wrestled at Crown Jewel 2018, ending an eight year retirement. He now runs the NXT developmental program for WWE. Michaels had an amazing career. That’s not exactly praise. There have been all kinds of changes in the wrestling world this year but the biggest has been the change in regime in the WWE. After nearly forty years of Vince McMahon being in charge, there are new bosses at the helm, meaning the McMahons no longer have full authority. Now one former WWE star has something to say about a member of the family. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: The Miz Fights A Cactus (And Loses) During a recent edition of his Cafe de Rene podcast, former WWE star Rene Dupree spoke about Shane McMahon, talking about how Shane’s matches would hurt the business. Dupree said that Shane only knows how to do stunts instead of wrestle a match, resulting in his stunts making it harder for wrestlers to get a reaction. Shane has been gone from WWE since this year’s Royal Rumble in January, allegedly due to backstage disagreements over how he would be presented. Shane does do a lot of things in the ring. Check out some of his better moments: [This pos..
She would do well. Getting the right matchup together is difficult to put together for any promotion and it can be even harder with so many wrestlers in WWE. Occasionally they will put together a story that needs the right person involved in the right spot. WWE is in the middle of such a story and now they might have found the final piece of the puzzle needed to make everything work. Over the last few weeks, the OC has been feuding with the Judgment Day, which has caused what the OC has dubbed the Rhea Ripley problem. The team has not been able to physically deal with Ripley, who has attacked the team multiple times. This has led to the OC looking for someone to help them take care of Ripley. According to Cagesideseats.com, Raquel Rodriguez has been teaming with the OC at live events, suggesting that she will be the answer to the Ripley problem, though this has not been confirmed. Opinion: Rodriguez would make sense as she is one of the few women in wrestling who is able to come clos..
It isn’t going well. The rise of technology has changed the way the wrestling world works in a very good way. Fans are now able to see more content than they have ever been able to see before from the comfort of their own home. However, there are also downsides to this technology and that was on display this week as some stars got into an argument in a rather public setting. AEW’s Sammy Guevara and Andrade El Idolo have gotten in a Twitter argument. The issues began with an interview that El Idolo gave (in Spanish) saying that Guevara complained about El Idolo hitting too hard in the ring. El Idolo said Guevara was the only one who ever complained, as the solution was to hit back harder. Guevara sent out a tweet of his own, albeit without referencing El Idolo, saying “You are a jobber. A favor hire. Be grateful b****.” El Idolo responded, with Guevara’s name, saying that if he has a problem with someone, he says it to their face. The two have continued to go back and forth throughout..
That’s quite the number. While AEW and WWE get the most attention in the wrestling world, they are certainly not alone. There are all kinds of other promotions, some of which have television or web series that you see on a regular basis. At the same time, there are other places where it is a bit harder to find them, and one such one off show did something very impressive. Last weekend, Jim Crockett Promotions was brought back for one night only to present Ric Flair’s Last Match. The show featured Ric Flair wrestling for the last time, teaming with Andrade El Idolo to defeat Jay Lethal and Jeff Jarrett. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the event drew 6,800 fans and a gate of $448,502, both of which are the second highest results in independent wrestling history, behind All Out’s 10,541 fans and $458,525 gate. Opinion: This is the kind of thing that you do not see happen very often but well done for Flair for having such a well received show. Flair may not have the best ..
That’s a big tractor. Summerslam has come and gone and the show certainly saw some changes for WWE. It was the first major show without Vince McMahon in charge of the company and that meant WWE needed to make some kind of an impact. A lot of that came in the main event which featured one of the stranger things that WWE has done in a rather long time. Now we know a bit more about what happened. The main event of Summerslam was a Last Man Standing match with Roman Reigns defending the WWE Universal Title against Brock Lesnar. During the match, Lesnar drove a tractor to the ring and lifted it up off the ground. According to PWInsider.com, the spot was “rougher and harder” than originally planned. There was a rehearsal for the spot earlier in the night, with a production worker driving the tractor. From another angle. Check out a different look at the tractor moving the ring: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: That is certainly something you do not see every day and it..
There isn’t room for everyone. AEW already has more wrestlers than it can handle as they only have so much television time available. At some point, the company has to figure out who can make an appearance here and there. That is harder than it seems, but then Ring Of Honor being added to AEW TV made things even more complicated. Now though, we might have a bit of a reprieve. According to Fightful Select, not everyone who appeared on last weekend’s Death Before Dishonor pay per view is signed to a contract, either long term or on a tiered deal. Several stars who appeared on the show are still free agents. Josh Woods, who appeared at Death Before Dishonor, also appeared on this week’s Dynamite and is signed to AEW on a tiered contract. Opinion: This is one of those things that makes sense, as there are only so many spots available in both AEW and Ring Of Honor. At the end of the day, Ring Of Honor is little more than a bunch of one off events with no television at the moment. Unless t..
A bittersweet moment. Wrestlers do a lot of things in front of the cameras and most of the time, it can be pretty entertaining. That leaves fans with quite a few things to see, often as part of a live crowd. You get to see all kinds of things when you go to a live television taping, some of which is done after the television cameras are turned off. That was the case again this week in a rather emotional moment. The main event of this week’s edition of AEW Dynamite saw Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland win the Tag Team Titles from the Young Bucks in a three way match, also involving Team Taz. Following the win, Lee addressed the crowd, talking about how there are very few people he is close to in life. This includes a man named Lascelles King, who was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer earlier this week. Lee promised that he was returning home to Texas to visit King and that he wanted King to fight harder than theye did tonight. This was a very emotional moment. Check out Lee’s stat..
That could be worse. There is very little in wrestling harder to watch than someone getting hurt. You don’t know what is going on at the moment and there are a lot of questions that come with it. One of the biggest is what is wrong, which leads to the question of how long before someone can get back in the ring. Now we might know a bit more about one of those questions. Earlier this week, news broke that AEW’s Jungle Boy was suffering from a legitimate injury and would be missing some time. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, the injury was confirmed to be a shoulder injury, though there is still no word on when or how the injury took place. It is suspected but not confirmed that it took place in the ladder match on the June 15 Dynamite. Opinion: This could be worse as a shoulder injury is a nasty thing to endure but at least it is something that isn’t related to his head. Jungle Boy is one of the better stars in AEW today and it would be a shame to see him miss that much time. If..
He might not be around as often. There are a lot of wrestlers in the world today but they all have one thing in common: at some point they have to step out of the ring. That can be harder for some than others and it can make for some interesting exits. Some people do it in a different way, and a current WWE star might have a bit of a unique plan for how to wind things down. During an interview on The Five Count, WWE’s Sheamus said that he would like to change his schedule to acting for a few months and then wrestling for a few months. The idea behind the switch would be to keep things fresh, though Sheamus says he still loves being in front of the camera in one way or another. Sheamus, 44, has been wrestling on the WWE main roster since 2009 and has dabbled in acting since 2008. Opinion: This is one of those things that could work, but it does seem that Sheamus is starting to think about life after wrestling. You wouldn’t know that he was in his mid 40s, but it is nice to see that he..
It had to happen eventually. Wrestlers have a fairly unique career path, as they rarely have a long time on top. At some point they have to find something else to do and it can often be harder than it seems. If a wrestler gets injured and can no longer get in the ring, their options are even more limited. That seems to be the case again and a longtime WWE star is making her exit. WWE’s Paige has announced that she will be leaving the company on July 7, ending her run that started in 2011. Paige was forced to retire from in-ring competition in 2018 after suffering a second major neck injury, which took place less than a month after her return from over a year away from the ring. Following her injury, Paige served as SmackDown General Manager in 2018. While she has not wrestled in nearly five years, Paige said that she will almost certainly return to the ring, though it is not clear when or where she will do so. Thank you @WWE ?? pic.twitter.com/9OhGjov13s — SARAYA (@RealPaigeWWE) Jun..
To put it mildly, there is a lot of WWE programming out there. With so many hours of content every week, it can be difficult to keep up with everything that WWE is offering. It doesn’t help that the shows are already pretty long in the first place, meaning that there is quite a bit to see week to week. It can certainly be done, but seeing and remembering everything the company offers is more than a bit tricky. With that being complicated enough, it isn’t made better when WWE decided to make things that much harder. Over the last few months (if not a lot longer), WWE has seemingly gone out of its way to change a bunch of things at the drop of a hat. This has ranged from major matches already announced to characters to wrestlers’ names, leaving things looking very different for a lot of people almost overnight. While I’m sure there is some twisted Vince McMahon logic behind the whole thing, it can be incredibly frustrating to deal with and that is what we are going to be looking at toda..
At least they had an idea. With so many wrestlers on the WWE roster, it can be difficult to figure out something for everyone to do. That can get even harder on a single show, as the time in the ring comes at a premium. WWE does what they can but there is always going to be someone left out. It was true last weekend as well, but there was a specific reason on a couple of occasions. WWE was on a European tour last weekend with Sheamus as one of the bigger names appearing on the shows. However, Sheamus did not wrestle on two of the four shows, missing both Saturday and Sunday’s events. According to PWInsider.com, this was due to WWE wanting to give Sheamus’ associate Butch more ring time. As a result, Butch wrestled on the shows instead, challenging for the Intercontinental Title on all four shows. Opinion: At least Sheamus is healthy and that is what matters most. This is something that makes sense, though I’m still not sure how well Butch is going to do as someone who runs away and i..
I’ll believe it when I hear it. Wrestlers have a tricky set of rules to follow in their profession. While their job is to have a safe yet also entertaining match, they are also tasked with keeping fans believing that what they are seeing is real. That is a lot harder than it sounds and some wrestlers are better at it than others. Now one of the best ever might be dropping every bit of kayfabe altogether. According to the WrestleVotes Twitter account, the Undertaker will be debuting his own podcast. WWE and Peacock have talked Undertaker into airing his own podcast in the vein of Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Sessions with the show debuting in the next few months. Undertaker officially retired from the ring at Survivor Series 2020 and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this year. In a show similar to that of Broken Skull Sessions, Peacock & WWE have convinced The Undertaker to enter the podcasting world. Source states his new show should begin airing within the next few months. A fa..
Guess who’s back? Wrestlers are very talented people as they have to try to do a lot of things at the same time. That can include having a match, but they also must convince you that what you are seeing is real. It becomes harder and harder to do that with each passing year, but sometimes a wrestler gets to show you something else. That might be the case again soon on a bigger scale. According to Deadline.com, former AEW star Brandi Rhodes has reached a deal with DIGA Studios to help bring her YouTube series A Shot Of Brandi to television. The show features Rhodes in her kitchen talking to celebrities or wrestlers while cooking something. DIGA is planning on shopping the series around to various television networks in a thirty minute format, though there is no word on any network picking up the series so far. Rhodes began the series on her own YouTube channel in 2018. Opinion: If this is something that works out for Rhodes and is something that she wants to do, good for her. You don’..
Monday Night Raw Date: March 7, 2022 Location: Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, Cleveland, Ohio Commentators: Jimmy Smith, Corey Graves, Byron Saxton We are less than a month away from Wrestlemania and that means we are probably going to start some of the harder pushes to the show this week. In theory we should be getting some more matches set for the show, as probably about half of it has been set. There is also a Tag Team Title match this week so let’s get to it.
