Time for the NXT shakeup. WWE does a lot of things right but there are some areas where they might need to improve a bit. One of these things is changing up matches and plans that have already been established and even advertised. That seems to be the case again, as a title match set for an upcoming show has expanded in a big way that hasn’t been done before. This week’s NXT featured the finals of the Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Kay Lee Ray and Io Shirai won the tournament, earning a shot at the Women’s Tag Team Titles. However, Ray and Shirai announced that they would instead be adding themselves to the Women’s Title match at Stand & Deliver, where Mandy Rose is scheduled to defend against Cora Jade. This is the first time that the winners of the Dusty Classic will be challenging for a singles title. That doesn’t sound good. Injuries are one of the few universal dangers in wrestling as you never know when someone is going to be taken out of action for any length of time. There are all kinds of possibilities and some of them are going to be more serious than others. Another has taken place to a current star and you might not be seeing her for a little while going forward. This week on NXT, Cora Jade announced that her tag partner Raquel Gonzalez has suffered an injury at the hands of Toxic Attraction and will be out of action for four to six weeks. Toxic Attraction attacked Gonzalez last week the women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, costing Gonzalez and Jade the match. Jade tried to get revenge on the team this week and will be challenging Mandy Rose for the Women’s Title at NXT Stand & Deliver on April 2 as a result. Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Semifinals: Grizzled Young veterans vs. Creed Brothers The Creeds break up the Veterans’ trash talking entrance and start the fight fast. That means Gibson gets beaten down inside as the brothers get to take turns on him. Brutus suplexes Julius onto Gibson but a cheap shot allows the tag to Drake. They might need to work on that. A tournament is one of the easiest concepts in all of wrestling. You have a bunch of people and put them together into a bracket and see who is the last one standing. Maybe it’s one wrestler or one team, but ultimately it is about finding the best of the field. That is harder than it sounds in some ways though, and that is the case again at the moment. WWE has promoted the second annual women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic for the last several weeks, but the tournament has yet to begin. According to Wrestling Observer Live, the tournament has yet to start because there are not enough teams available. Only a few teams have been announced and there have been no brackets revealed for the tournament. No official start date was ever given aside from February. Moving on up? NXT has been shaken up in a huge way over the last few months and that seems like it could be continuing for the foreseeable future. At the end of the day though, NXT exists as the developmental program for WWE and that means the wrestlers need to move up at some point. One wrestler seemed ready to go but there is a specific reason they are sticking around. According to Wrestling Observer Live, Raquel Gonzalez was ready to move up to the main roster but the move was postponed for the sake of the women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. There are not enough teams available so Gonzalez is staying around to help fill in a spot. No teams have been announced for the tournament, which is scheduled to begin at some point in February. That can come in more than a few forms but most of the time, the process can be a lot of fun. WWE has had its fair share of tournaments over the years and now we know the field for one of its longer running and more fun events. Add another one to the list. According to a report from PWInsider, Kyle O’Reilly has not-resigned with WWE and has officially become a free agent. Both he and Johnny Gargano have been removed from the company’s internal roster. This news comes after Gargano became a free agent the day before. He is currently free to work anywhere he wants to since there was no non-compete attached to his contract. O’Reilly has had quite a career in NXT. He was a three-time WWE NXT tag team champion, and also won the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic in 2018 with Adam Cole. The pair, along with Bobby Fish and Roderick Strong, was known as the Undisputed Era and was one of the most successful factions in NXT history. Cody Rhodes won the rubber match against recent rival Malakai Black. The victory came on the October 23 edition of AEW Dynamite, after a bout that many fans praised as the show stealer of the night. The match wasn’t without its issues however, as The American Nightmare received a massive amount of hate from the opening bell. The Orlando audience rained boos down upon Rhodes, who ultimately emerged with his arm raised in the end. Whether or not this feud is over is anyone’s guess. I don’t think I’m breaking any new ground when I say that WWE is not exactly on fire at the moment. WWE television has all kinds of problems with almost nothing positive going on a lot of the time. There are always going to be a couple of things that work out, and there is a reason for that: the wrestlers themselves. That is what we are going to be looking at today, because it is something that is forgotten far too often. There are all kinds of problems with WWE these days, but the vast majority of them come down to the company’s creative decisions. You will see stories taking place in WWE that Steve Austin and the Rock could not make work at the height of their powers. I have loved NXT for a very long time now, and that is not likely to change at any time in the future. For years now, it has felt like my wrestling show, as it has been the show I have looked forward to seeing more than any other in a given week. That is still true from time to time, but it is clear that the show is going to be shaken up in a pretty big way in the near future. The more I think about that, the more of a good idea it seems, though only if certain issues are addressed. NXT became special to me on January 2, 2013. In that particular show’s main event, NXT Champion Seth Rollins was defending the title against Corey Graves (dang that makes it seem even longer) when the rest of the newly formed Shield ran in for the DQ.
