REVIEW: No Way Out 2006: The Dream Match

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over ten years now and have reviewed over 5,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? No Way Out 2006 Date: February 19, 2006 Location: 1st Mariner Arena, Baltimore, Maryland Attendance: 11,000 Commentators: Michael Cole, Tazz For the first time in a long time, we have a pay per view that has my interest. Smackdown has gotten a lot better in a hurry, but they need the big spectacular to make it work. With Wrestlemania coming up, this could be a great way to get the momentum going, and hopefully that’s what happens here. I’m sure Undertaker vs. Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio vs. Randy Orton and Booker T. vs...

She’s Missed: Backstage Reaction To Mandy Rose’s Surprise WWE Release

People are going to talk. There have been a lot of WWE roster moves throughout the year and some of them have been more than a bit surprising. You never know when you are going to see a wrestler leave out of nowhere and that was the case again earlier this week with a surprise release. It was enough of a surprise that it was going to get a reaction, and now we have the important ones. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: If At First You Succeed: Kevin Owens Pitched Dream Match vs. Shawn Michaels Earlier this week, Mandy Rose was suddenly released from her WWE contract, reportedly due to Rose posting risque content online. According to Bryan Alvarez’s subscription feed by way of Wrestlingnews.co, the release took Rose by surprise and she was caught off guard. In addition, Rose’s Toxic Attraction teammate Jacy Jayne seemingly responded to the news with a series of broken heart images. Neither Rose nor Gigi Dolin, the third member of the team, has commented on the release. Per Bryan Alvarez on Mandy..

If At First You Succeed: Kevin Owens Pitched Dream Match vs. Shawn Michaels

What could have been. There are certain matches in wrestling that are so special that they are described as “dream matches”. These can often include wrestlers who you might not see face off at any other time, making it a very rare occurrence. Occasionally the matches are not things you would have thought of seeing in the first place, and one star pitched another such match. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: That’s A No: Backstage Reaction To Possible Vince McMahon Return (And It’s Not Happy) Earlier this year at WrestleMania 38, Steve Austin came out of retirement for one last match, facing Kevin Owens in an impromptu no holds barred match. Owens recently appeared on the French language Sans Restrictions podcast and revealed that after his WrestleMania match with Austin, he personally asked Shawn Michaels about a possible match between the two. While Michaels, 57 years old, said that he did think about another match, he felt that he shouldn’t do so. There is nothing to suggest that Michaels wil..

I’d Watch: The Rock Makes Surprise Choice For His Dream Opponent

That could have been great. One thing that almost every wrestling fan has done over the years is talk about what kind of dream matches they would love to see. Fans can come up with some of the most out there concepts for a match that still sound fun to hear. Occasionally you will see wrestlers doing the same thing and now one of the all time greats has revealed his dream match. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Two Monday Night Raw Stars Make Surprise NXT Appearances In a new post on his Instagram page, Dwayne Johnson is shown wearing Macho Man Randy Savage sunglasses. The post features Johnson saying that Savage was always his dream match as it would have been an honor to share the ring with him. The two were never in the same promotion at the same time, as Savage was in WCW in 1996 when Johnson signed with WWE. Johnson has been rumored to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 in Hollywood in April 2023. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dwayne Johnson (@therock) They both h..

What? More Details On Possible Steve Austin WWE Return, Potential Options

Those are some big ones. There are certain stars in wrestling history who have eclipsed almost any other name and are among the all time greats. There are not very many of these wrestlers and you know them when you see them. It means a lot when one of them is able to come back and do something, even for one night, and now there is some speculation about another appearance. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Viper Memories: Randy Orton Posts Tribute To Umaga And Rosey Over the last few weeks, there have been teases of Steve Austin returning to the ring for one more match, possibly at WrestleMania 39. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, some of the possibilities for Austin would be brawling with someone like (though not certainly) Baron Corbin or Austin Theory ala WrestleMania 38, or a dream match. Possible dream match opponents would be Brock Lesnar, John Cena or Logan Paul, though it is not clear if these are names WWE is considering. The entire situation is still said to be in the ..

AEW Full Gear 2022 Preview, Predictions And Thoughts

It’s time for another AEW pay per view and as has been the case for a pretty good while now, things are not exactly feeling the most interesting at the moment. The World Title match doesn’t have the most personal setup and the rest of the show is feeling a bit hit or miss. That being said, the idea of AEW having a bad pay per view seems completely insane so I have quite a bit of confidence in what they are going to do. Let’s get to it. Zero Hour: Jun Akiyama vs. Eddie Kingston This is a match that was added after this week’s Rampage went off the air. In short, this is Kingston’s dream match and….I’m struggling to come up with a reason that should interest me. Akiyama is a legend, but there is no real reason for the two of them to be fighting other than Kingston just saying he wanted it to happen. For some reason this is added to the pre-show and now the night is even longer than it needed to be. I’ll go with Akiyama winning, as AEW seems to like the idea of doing everything they can..

Ric Flair Rules Out CM Punk, The Rock and John Cena as Opponents for Stone Cold at WrestleMania 39

The news dropped on Monday that Triple H and WWE officials were interested in having Stone Cold Steve Austin do more with the company following his long awaited return to in-ring competition at WrestleMania 38 against Kevin Owens. Since then, the internet continues to speculate on who the best opponent would be for The Texas Rattlesnake with WrestleMania 39 returning to Hollywood. Naturally, there are a handful of dream matches that would help sell out SoFi Stadium this April. The few names that have emerged from the rumor mill thus far include John Cena, The Rock and CM Punk. While they each have their own unique intrigue for the grandest stage of them all, The Nature Boy is ruling out a few of these big names himself. Related: How A Possible CM Punk WWE Return Is Being Received Backstage During his latest To Be The Man podcast on Wednesday, Ric Flair was asked about Austin’s next opponent and immediately didn’t see a potential WWE return and match with Stone Cold as a valid option ..

WWE Star Going International For Inter-Promotional “Miracle” Match

An international guest star. WWE is the most well known wrestling company in the world and their stars are some of the biggest names in the history of wrestling. However, there are several other promotions out there with quite the history of their own with quite the series of legendary stars. Now a WWE star is going to get to go do something special with a legend from outside the company. Pro Wrestling Noah has announced that WWE’s Shinsuke Nakamura will be facing the Great Muta on January 1 in Tokyo, Japan. The match will be part of Muta’s retirement tour, which culminates later in the month. Nakamura has commented on the match on Twitter, calling it a “miracle”. The two have wrestled two singles matches before, with Muta winning both, including defeating Nakamura for the IWGP Heavyweight Title in 2008. On New Year's Day, fans will see pro wrestling's biggest dream match in 2023. 2023.1.1 ABEMA presents "NOAH: THE NEW YEAR 2023" at NIPPON BUDOKAN: GREAT MUTA vs. SHINSUKE..

BREAKING: Brock Lesnar Returns To WWE And Finds A New Target

The big one is back. There are very few wrestlers who become attractions. Rather than being around full time and wrestling week in and week out, a select few names become such stars that they are able to appear every now and then for special moments. WWE has a few of them and one of them made a surprise return this week, with a fresh target seemingly in his sights. Brock Lesnar returned to WWE this week, appearing on Monday Night Raw. Lesnar interrupted an in-ring promo from United States Champion Bobby Lashley before laying Lashley out. While not yet announced, there is a strong chance that this will be used to set up a match between the two. Lashley and Lesnar previously met at this year’s Royal Rumble, where Lashley defeated Lesnar to win the WWE Title. Lesnar last appeared for WWE at Summerslam. Opinion: Lesnar vs. Lashley is one of those dream matches that hasn’t been run into the ground as of yet. It would absolutely not surprise me to see this as the co-main event of Crown Jew..

WWE Wants Roman Reigns vs. 34 Year Old World Champion In Dream Match

That would be a showdown. WWE is still the biggest and most powerful wrestling promotion in the world and that means they are going to be able to draw in names that almost no one else can. It means something to be part of a WWE show, even as an outsider. WWE is making an effort to bring someone back in for one of the biggest spots imaginable if they can pull it off. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE is interested in a match between Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns and boxing world champion Tyson Fury. There is no word on when this match would take place as Fury has a title defense scheduled for this December. Fury has wrestled for WWE before, defeating Braun Strowman at Crown Jewel 2019 and has made appearances since. Opinion: This is about as logical of a move as there is and it is nice to see WWE moving in such a direction. Reigns is more or less out of challengers for the time being so setting up this kind of a dream matchup would make sense. I’m not sure wh..

REVIEW: Summerslam 2021: They’re Back

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Summerslam 2021 Date: August 21, 2021 Location: Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, Nevada Commentators: Pat McAfee, Michael Cole, Jimmy Smith, Byron Saxton, Corey Graves We’re back in front of a full stadium and that could make things interesting. Throw in the fact that this is on a Saturday for once and there is a different energy to the whole thing. We have a full on dream match main event as John Cena is challenging Roman Reigns for the Universal Title so at least the big match at the end should be good. Let’s get t..

AEW Forbidden Door Preview, Predictions And Thoughts

This is a special show as we will be getting a big crossover between AEW and New Japan Pro Wrestling in a series of….I guess you would call them dream matches. The show has had a lot of things thrown onto the card in a short amount of time and the build has been ok for the most part. The good thing is that the action itself should be more than enough to make it work, so hopefully they can live up to the hype. Let’s get to it. Buy-In Show: Gunn Club/Max Caster vs. Yuya Uemura/Alex Coughlin/DKC/Kevin Knight We have the AEW mashup team against the Young Lions and that is a good way to go here. Throw in Billy Gunn to make things work and be the in-ring coach and it should work out well enough. I’ve seen the Lions before and they’re capable of having some good stuff, so the pieces are set up here. Give them a few minutes and let them warm the crowd up and everything should be ok. I’ll take the Young Lions to win here, as pinning one of the Gunns isn’t going to hurt them that much. If noth..

Something New: AEW Adds Unique Tag Team Title Match To Forbidden Door

That’s a different one. Next weekend, AEW and New Japan will be presenting its first ever Forbidden Door pay per view. The event will include a series of matches between the two promotions with one dream match after another. The card has already taken shape but there are still some matches that need to be filled in. AEW took care of part of that this week, as another promotion is getting in on the act (kind of). A new match was added to Forbidden Door this week on AEW Rampage. Announced for the show was a triple threat tag team match between Ring Of Honor Tag Team Champions FTR, IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions the United Empire (Great O’Khan/Jeff Cobb) and Roppongi Vice with both sets of titles on the line. Forbidden Door is set to take place from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Opinion: That is the kind of stacked match that can make for a great addition to the pay per view card. I’m not sure how the companies are going to handle one of their titles changing hands but it..

Not So Fast: Rumored AEW Forbidden Door Match Not Expected To Happen

Maybe not. We are coming up on AEW’s next major event with Full Gear, which will feature AEW wrestlers vs. New Japan wrestlers in a series of dream matches. The card has quite a bit of potential, but so far, most of the show has not been announced. There have been some matches suggested, but it seems that one match hinted at might not actually be taking place. This week on AEW Dynamite, Hangman Page mentioned IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, saying that he wanted a title shot. However, according to Wrestling Observer Radio, a singles match between Page and Okada is not expected to take place. There is no word on what the two of them will be doing at the show or why the match was mentioned with no plans for it to take place. Opinion: That’s a bit confusing, as the rule of thumb in wrestling is that if a mach is mentioned, it is going to take place sooner than later. Page and Okada are likely to be on the show, but why have Page issue the challenge if the match is not going to be on th..

WWE Has Limited Options For Ronda Rousey’s Next Challenger

They have options. WWE’s women’s division has come a very long way over the years and there is a good reason to believe that things could continue to improve. A lot of this is due tot he amount of talent that the division has, but things are in a bit of a bad spot at the moment. The division is down a few names, and that could create some issues for one of the titles in the near future. Earlier this week, Naomi and Sasha Banks walked out on WWE over issues with their creative directions. The original plans called for Banks to move on to challenge SmackDown Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey at Hell In A Cell, but now Rousey will be needing a new challenger. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the most likely choices are Shayna Baszler and Natalya, as it is believed that the two could give Rousey her best match. Rousey and Baszler are also close friends and it would be a dream match for the two of them. Opinion: Natalya was the first name that came to mind, as she is good for a..

WATCH: Roman Reigns Calls Out The Rock At WWE Live Event

That would be the big one. There are very few true dream matches left in the WWE. With so many matches being presented at any given time, it can be difficult for the company to come up with something new that fans will want to see. Those things do happen though, and there was another indication that what might be an all time dream match could be a possibility. WWE is currently in Europe on a live event tour, including a show in London, England on Saturday. The show was headlined by Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns successfully defending his title against Drew McIntyre. Following the match, Reigns thanked the fans for bringing their energy to the show. A fan shouted something about the Rock, with Reigns responding that “The Rock can get it too.” Rock vs. Reigns has been discussed as a possible WrestleMania 39 main event, though the match has yet to be confirmed. It’s weird to see Reigns like this. Check out Reigns breaking character and addressing the London crowd: [Thi..

WATCH: Trish Stratus And Becky Lynch Get Into It At WWE Live Event

That’s how you make a dream match. The Women’s Revolution has brought women’s wrestling to unbelievable heights in WWE, to the point where a women’s match even headlined WrestleMania. That is something few would have ever believed to be a realistic possibility but they pulled it off. So much of it is due to the talent involved, but they were influenced by the generation that came before them. This weekend, the generations collided. This weekend, WWE ran a live event in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The event was hosted by WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus, a native of Toronto. The main event of the show saw Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch successfully defend her title against Rhea Ripley. After the match, Stratus got in the ring to confront Lynch, who slapped her. Ripley then took out Lynch to end the show. It was a big showdown. Check out the battle of the generations: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: One of the coolest things about the Women’s Revolution is the fact ..

Surprise Heel Turn Sets Up A WrestleMania 38 Dream Match

There’s your WrestleMania match. We are just over a month away from WrestleMania 38 and the show is still starting to come together. There have been a few matches announced for the card but WWE needs to start putting some things together to make it feel bigger. The show needs some non-title matches to build the card up and now we have another on the list. Last week on Monday Night Raw, Edge issued an open challenge for WrestleMania. This week, AJ Styles accepted the challenge, with Edge saying that he wants the bulldog Styles and not the one who has been teaming with Omos for most of the last year. Edge then attacked Styles and laid him out with two Conchairtos to end the show, turning heel in the process. This will be Styles and Edge’s first ever singles match. Opinion: Now that is the first non-title match that feels WrestleMania worthy and that is a nice thing to see. WWE has gotten the top of the card set but they need to fill in more of that next level. Edge and Styles have the ..
