The battle continues. AEW coming into the wrestling world has changed the industry as there is now a new place for various stars to go. This also means that there are going to be stars who are going to be pursued by both companies. It can lead to some wrestlers moving around in one way or another, and now an AEW star seems to be at least interested in jumping ship. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Wardlow Reveals The TNT Title Has Been Stolen (Along With The Rest Of His Stuff) According to Fightful Select, Brian Cage’s deal with AEW is expiring soon but the two sides have agreed to work with each other through the end of March. This will include Ring Of Honor’s Supercard of Honor, as Cage is one third of the Ring Of Honor Six Man Tag Team Champions. There is still a chance of the two sides coming to terms on an extension, with names such as Chris Jericho hoping to keep Cage in the company. WWE is said to be interested in signing Cage as well, though there is no word on where Cage is lea..
Impact Wrestling Date: February 9, 2023 Location: Osceola Heritage Park, Kissimmee, Florida Commentators: Tom Hannifan, Matthew Rehwoldt No Surrender is coming up and most of the card has been set up so far. That includes the World Title match, which has not exactly gotten a ton of hype. Maybe it is because it seems we have another challenger on the horizon, but Rich Swann challenging Josh Alexander isn’t exactly feeling huge. Hopefully they can get some more of it covered this week so let’s get to it. Opening recap. Matt Cardona arrives and says he’s in the main event tonight. He is shown to his private dressing room with champagne and shrimp cocktails, but it turns out this is Joe Hendry’s room. Cardona is shown to a closet instead. No Surrender #1 Contenders Qualifying Match: Brian Myers vs. Dirty Dango They run the ropes to start until Dango armdrags him into an armbar. Myers’ sunset flip is blocked and Dango drops a leg before they head outside. A posting cuts Dango off and of..
Dynamite Date: January 25, 2023 Location: Rupp Arena, Lexington, Kentucky Commentators: Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, Taz This is going to be an emotional one as the main event will feature the Jay Briscoe Tribute match between Mark Briscoe and Jay Lethal. If that’s not enough, we’re still on the way to Revolution and that means Bryan Danielson gets to wrestle again. This time he has to find a way around Brian Cage, which is quite the different opponent than he has had in recent weeks. Other than that, the Gunns and the Acclaimed are going to have family therapy, which could go in a few different ways. Let’s get to it. Opening sequence. Chris Jericho/Sammy Guevara vs. Action Andretti/Ricky Starks We are joined in the middle of Jericho’s entrance (including Daniel Garcia). Andretti and Guevara start things off and exchange some flips without being able to make a ton of contact. Andretti’s standing moonsault misses and they stare at each other for a bit. Guevara offers a handshake and th..
New home? The rise of AEW has changed the way the wrestling world works, including the wrestlers. One of the biggest changes has been the rise of a new big budget wrestling promotion where wrestlers can go, meaning more wrestlers are at work. If nothing else, it allows people who leave WWE to have another place to find work, and that is the case again as a former WWE star will be making his AEW debut. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Back Later: AEW Announces Injury, Match Set For Dynamite Changed Bryan Danielson is currently trying to earn a shot at AEW World Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman at Revolution. In order to earn a shot, Danielson must win a series of matches, ending on February 8. This week, Danielson defeated Brian Cage, but Cage injured Danielson’s shoulder after the match. Later in the night, Friedman announced that Danielson’s next opponent will be former WWE star Timothy Thatcher, who will be making his AEW debut. Since his release from WWE in January 2022, Thatcher has primari..
Tick tock? There is all kinds of talent on the AEW roster with quite the variety of wrestlers and stars. The company has found a great mix that allows them to present a bunch of different matches with quite the series of combinations. At some point, some of the wrestlers are going to have to leave though and that might be taking place again with one of its stars. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: And The Award Goes To: AEW President Tony Khan Names His MVP Of 2022 According to Fightful Select, Brian Cage’s AEW contract will be expiring in “a matter of weeks”, though there is still a chance that the two sides will be able to come together on a new deal. Cage’s original AEW contract was set to expire in 2022 but the company picked up his option, which reportedly surprised Cage, who had not been used much at the time of the pick up. WWE has also reportedly put on some “feelers” to see if there is any interest in bringing Cage in. Cage is set to face Bryan Danielson this week on Dynamite. Cage has..
She’s a surprise. WWE has all kinds of wrestlers on its roster, which allows it to offer a variety of matches with different stars included. That can make for some interesting moments, but at some point WWE needs to bring in some fresh names to spice things up a bit. They may have done that again, albeit with a name that might be a bit surprising given her history. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WRESTLING RUMORS: WWE Star Reportedly Suspended For Wellness Violation According to Fightful Select, Kylie Rae wrestled at this week’s WWE Main Event taping under the name Briana Ray, facing Dana Brooke. This comes after Rae participated in a WWE tryout camp earlier this month, though it is not clear if Rae has been signed to a contract. Rae has wrestled for All Elite Wrestling, Impact Wrestling and the NWA. However, Rae has walked away from promotions multiple times on little notice, with mental health issues often being rumored (though not confirmed) as the reason. Maybe this works. Check out Rae’..
Dynamite Date: December 7, 2022 Location: H-E-B Center, Cedar Park, Texas Commentators: Tony Schiavone, Taz, Excalibur It’s the go home show for Final Battle and the Dynamite before next week’s Winter Is Coming so it is time to start hammering home the build for both shows. Believe it or not we have a battle royal this week for a shot at MJF’s….ring, rather than the World Title. That should get a lot of people on the show so let’s get to it. Opening sequence. Battle Royal Ricky Starks, Brian Cage, Jungle Boy, Orange Cassidy, Shawn Dean, Dustin Rhodes, Lee Moriarty, Ethan Page, Matt Hardy, Kip Sabian, Dalton Castle, Butcher, Blade The winner gets to face MJF for the Dynamite Diamond whenever they decide. Sabian and Cassidy take turns ramming each other into the corner until the Butcher breaks it up. Cassidy is sent over the top so he tries to skin the cat, only to have Blade knock him out. Rhodes (hometown boy) hits a Canadian Destroyer on Sabian and clotheslines him out. Butcher c..
Everyone has to hang it up sometime. Wrestlers can have a hard time walking away from the industry as you never know how long it might be before they can get out of the ring. So often a wrestler might try to have one more run or one more match, making retirements fairly rare. Now though, one former WWE star has announced his retirement and had his last match. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: No More: 53 Year Old Wrestling Legend Announces 2023 Is His Last Year In The Ring Over the weekend, Nova, formerly known as Simon Dean in WWE, wrestled his last match at a Stand Alone Wrestling event in his hometown of Tom’s River, New Jersey. It would be an idea. There are all kinds of ways to present a wrestling story and some of them can be issues fans can relate to. At the same time though, there are some stories that are a little bit more outside of reality, as you would not be likely to see them take place in most people’s lives. Now we are hearing about some pitched ideas in WWE that would fit either list. Former WWE writer Brian Gerwitz took to Twitter in response to recent “discussed” Royal Rumble plans. Gerwitz revealed some ideas that were “discussed” during his time with the company. Gerwitz mentioned two stories, neither of which ever made it to television. First up, there was an idea pitched of Vince McMahon having a midlife crisis, resulting in him growing a beard, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and singing Black Eyed Peas songs. The other idea would have involved Kaval, better known as Low Ki, revealed as Undertaker’s long lost son. There is no word on how close WWE came to using either idea. Things “discussed” i..
He was requested. There are all kinds of people who come together to make a wrestling show work and some of them do not get the attention they deserve. While the people in front of the cameras are the ones who matter the most, there are also people who are going to help put everything together behind the scenes. Now one of the more controversial ones has a bit better of an explanation. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Angry Chief: Roman Reigns Reportedly “Very Heated” Over Unplanned WarGames Spot Over the weekend, WWE presented Survivor Series, which included a SmackDown Women’s Title match that saw Ronda Rousey successfully defending against Shotzi. The match was co-produced by Jason Jordan and the returning Brian Kendrick, the latter of whom is not a full time WWE producer. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Rousey requested that Kendrick, one of her original trainers, be brought in for the show. While this was considered a tryout, it was more catering to Rousey’s request. The tryout wa..
Another hand. There are a lot of people needed to make a wrestling show work and a lot of them are not people you see in front of the camera. In addition to the wrestlers, there are coaches and producers who help put the matches together. WWE has a large group of such producers and this week saw them bring back a name to help things out a bit, though it might not be so well received. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Next Big Thing: Triple H Reveals Brock Lesnar Is Selling Meat According to Fightful Select, Brian Kendrick served as a producer on the SmackDown Women’s Title match between Ronda Rousey and Shotzi at Survivor Series, assisting Jason Jordan. According to PWInsider.com, Kendrick was working on a tryout and has not been hired by WWE. Kendrick was scheduled to make his AEW debut in February but the appearance was pulled after controversial comments involving conspiracy theories made by Kendrick resurfaced before his match. The match was rather watchable. Check out how it went, plu..
Switch it up. AEW has been around for a little over three and a half years now and during that time they have established a schedule that they tend to follow for their major events. The company presents four regular pay per views, with the next installment coming this weekend. However, they have now made a last minute change, which will affect both this event and the next TV show. During a media call to promote Full Gear, AEW President Tony Khan announced that the finals of the Full Gear #1 contenders tournament have been moved from Full Gear to Dynamite. This comes after the first round match between Ricky Starks and Lance Archer was postponed due to Starks being not medically cleared to compete. The first round match will now take place on Rampage, with the winner facing Brian Cage on the Full Gear Zero Hour show. The winner of that will face Ethan Page on Dynamite. They have potential. Check out what we’ll be seeing on Rampage: [This post contains video, click to play] [This po..
He has a point. There are very few honors that last forever in wrestling. While winning a championship can mean a lot to a wrestler, at some point they are probably going to lose it back. However, there is one honor that is never taken away: being inducted into a Hall of Fame. Some of the greatest of all time are inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame and now another famous name thinks he should be in as well. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Nine In, One Out: Update On WWE’s Plans For Survivor Series (Contains Likely Spoilers) Former WWE referee Earl Hebner appeared on his son Brian Hebner’s Reffin It Up podcast, where he was asked if he felt he deserved induction into the WWE Hall of Fame. Earl said that he did, citing what he had done for the business and the matches he refereed over the years. However, Earl also said that the decision on an induction came from WWE rather than him. Earl was with WWE from 1988-2005. Earl has been involved in some moments over the years. Check out some of his no..
Impact Wrestling Date: November 10, 2022 Location: Sam’s Town Live, Las Vegas, Nevada Commentators: Tom Hannifan, Matthew Rehwoldt We have two shows left before Overdrive and the card is mostly already set. This week is likely going to be a lot more firming up of the card, plus some extra X-Division Title tournament matches. The tournament still needs a final and we are probably getting closer to one this week. Let’s get to it. Opening recap. Opening sequence. Digital Media Title: Joe Hendry vs. Brian Myers Myers, with Matt Cardona, is defending. Before the match, Hendry promises to be a Digital Media Champion that will inspire the comments section. The fans make it clear that THEY BELIEVE as Hendry works on the arm to start. A delayed suplex gives Hendry two but Myers is right back with a kick to the face. The chinlock goes on for a bit before Myers switches to a guillotine choke. That’s broken up with straight power into a suplex but the Standing Ovation is blocked. Myers hits a..
You have to hang it up eventually. Retirement is a weird concept for a lot of wrestlers as several of them have issues with leaving wrestling. Many of them have often stick around longer than expected as they can keep coming back for one more match here or there. Eventually everyone has to hang up the boots though and that is going to be the case with another former WWE star. According to Fightful, Mike Bucci, formerly known as Nova or Simon Dean in WWE, will be wrestling his final match on December 3. Bucci, 50 years old, will team with Aron Stevens (formerly known as Damien Sandow) and another partner to be named against Matt Cardona, Brian Myers and another partner to be named at Stand Alone Wrestling’s Contest Of Champions in in Tom’s River, New Jersey. Bucci began wrestling in 1992 and made his name in ECW as part of the Blue World Order. He has also wrestled in WWE and around the independent circuit. Opinion: This is one of those things that you know has to happen at some point..
Bound For Glory 2022 Date: October 7, 2022 Location: Washington Avenue Armory, Albany, New York Commentators: Matthew Rehwoldt, Tom Hannifan It’s the biggest night of the Impact year and the show doesn’t look too bad. Honor No More is in a pair of title matches, including the show’s main event, so tonight might determine all of the group’s future. That could go in a few ways but there is enough other stuff to keep the interest up. Let’s get to it. Pre-Show: Digital Media Title: Brian Myers vs. ??? Myers is defending in an open challenge and it’s……Dirty Dango (Fandango) for a surprise. Feeling out process to start with Dango hitting a dropkick to put the champ down. A legdrop gives Dango two and it’s time for Myers to bail out to the floor. Myers wins the fight outside as we go to French commentary for a bit. Back in and the chinlock goes on, with the fans trying to cheer Dango back up to his feet. Some stomping sets up another chinlock but Dango sends him outside for the slingshot d..
Hand them over. Titles are some of the most important things in all of wrestling as they tell any fan who matters most on the show. Wrestlers with a large shiny title in their hands are going to be treated as a bigger deal than others and it can mean a lot when a title changes hands. That is what happened on one night, as multiple championships changed hands on a single show. Impact Wrestling held its annual Bound For Glory event on Friday night where two championships changed hands. First up, Frankie Kazarian defeated Mike Bailey to win the X-Division Title for the sixth time. Later, the Death Dollz (Taya Valkyrie/Jessicka) defeated VXT (Chelsea Green/Deonna Purrazzo) to win the Knockouts Tag Team Titles for the first time. In addition, Digital Media Champion Brian Myers, Tag Team Champions OGK, Knockouts Champion Jordynne Grace and World Champion Josh Alexander retained their titles. Opinion: Bound For Glory is the kind of show that often sees a lot of changes so only two title cha..
I know Impact Wrestling might not be at the top of everyone’s hit list at the moment but the company does have a long history of important shows and big moments. This show is the biggest thing that they offer and we should be in for a special night as a result. The build has gone well and there are some promising matches on here so if they can live up to the hype, we could be in for a lot of fun. Let’s get to it. Pre-Show: Digital Media Title: Brian Myers(c) vs. ??? I’m glad to be getting this out of the way early as there is no way of knowing how this is going to go. It’s a mystery opponent/open challenge deal because we haven’t had one of those in at least 14 seconds. This could be almost anyone and while that is interesting, there is only so much to be had out of a Kickoff Show match for the lower midcard title, even with the entertaining Myers involved. We’ll go with Myers to….lose here, as a title change like this one would be a nice way to get the night started. As for who take..
It set them apart. There are very few names who have become the undisputed face of WWE over the years. These are some of the biggest names in the history of wrestling and they are often around for a long time. Every now and then you get to see two of them face off over an issue. That was the case at one point, but it was the result of a personal issue between them. In his new book “There’s Just One Problem…: True Tales from the Former, One-Time, 7th Most Powerful Person in WWE”, former WWE writer Brian Gerwitz talked about the real life issues between the Rock and John Cena. The Rock’s side of the issue came from Cena saying that he felt the Rock never gave anything back to WWE after leaving for Hollywood. The worst part was that Cena made the comments in an interview rather than saying them to Cena’s face. Cena and the Rock would later make amends and face each other at WrestleMania 28 and 29. Opinion: This is the kind of thing that can cause some issues for everyone involved as Cen..
