“The Genius” Lanny Poffo Passes Away At Age 68
We have some sad news to report today as Lanny Poffo, who was known as “The Genius” in WWE has passed away at the age of 68. From WWE.com: The son of Angelo Poffo and younger brother of WWE Hall of Famer “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Lanny Poffo had a style all his own. Arriving in WWE in 1985 alongside his brother, “Leaping” Lanny Poffo was one of the first high-flyers in WWE. While he achieved some success as a fan favorite reading his own poetry and throwing Frisbees to the crowd, he reached new heights as The Genius while managing Mr. Perfect. Lanny had the honor of inducting his brother into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2015. That’s a change of pace. WWE has a very talented roster of stars but there are times when new names have to be added. There are a variety of places that can serve as a line of talent, with WWE recently looking in one rather specific direction to find its next generation of stars. Now though, it seems that direction might be shifting back towards the place WWE looked before. This includes Gabe Sapolsky scouting talent at this weekend’s Defy Wrestling event. WWE’s previous strategy had involved focusing on athletes from other sports being turned into wrestlers. In addition, the company runs about one premium live event a month, many of which have some sort of theme. Some of these have a long history but others are one off ideas that do not have a chance to go anywhere. It seems that there will be another on that list. According to Brandon Thurston’s Patreon account, WWE has canceled the January 1, 2023 Day One event at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia and it will not be rescheduled. As of now, there are no premium live events scheduled between Survivor Series in November and Royal Rumble in January. There’s a lot more to it than that. One of the biggest wrestling stories of the week has been the backstage altercation between Andrade El Idolo and Sammy Guevara at this week’s AEW TV taping. It is the latest physical altercation between AEW stars and comes after El Idolo made negative comments about Guevara in an interview on Mexican television. Now we know some more about the situation. According to Fightful Select, El Idolo was said to have been the aggressor and was at the taping for the sake of fighting Guevara. El Idolo reportedly threw punches at Guevara, who did not throw punches back. According to Wrestling Observer Radio and Fightful Select, this is why only El Idolo was sent home and not Guevara, who went on to get the pinfall in the show’s main event.
