Money money? One of the biggest criticisms that you will hear of professional wrestling is that the endings are planned out in advance as the entire presentation is fixed. While this is true, the stories are built up in a way to leave fans wondering what they are going to see in a match or story. That can make things all the more interesting, and it could potentially make some money. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: They Could See Him: Backstage WWE Reaction To John Cena’s Monday Night Raw Appearance According to CNBC, WWE is attempting to legalize betting on its matches in Colorado and Michigan. The company has hired accounting firm Ernst & Young to help with the pitch. The firm has helped legalizing betting on the Emmys and Oscars, with WWE claiming that their results are kept secret in the same way. One potential solution would be for WWE to have storylines and results locked in place in advance, with wrestlers only finding out the results just before a match takes place. However, CNBC is a..
She’s not having it. Wrestlers are celebrities in a unique way, as while they are certainly known to the public, they are rarely known for anything but their time in the ring. That does not offer them many options for getting their name out there otherwise, but it does happen occasionally. Now we are seeing it again as a WWE star had a moment that is likely to get her noticed. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Hi There: International Star Makes Official WWE Debut Liv Morgan was a guest at Tuesday’s New York Knicks game in Madison Square Garden to promote WWE’s upcoming live event in the same venue. During the night, Morgan was acknowledged as a guest of the team and presented with a customized Knicks jersey with her name on the back. Also during the night, Morgan was shown watching the game while a fan spoke to her, but she barely acknowledged anything he said. The Knicks’ Twitter account shared the clip, saying Morgan definitely did not hear a word of what was said to her. View this post on I..
That wraps it up. Wrestlers have a lot to deal with on a regular basis and that isn’t even taking into account things outside of the ring. In addition to wrestling, they often have to deal with the same kinds of problems that normal people have to face. Sometimes those things are especially serious, like a problem that an AEW star seems to have taken a step towards overcoming. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: He’s Back: AEW Star Returning To Action After 8+ Month Hiatus According to Fightful, Jeff Hardy’s DUI case has been closed as Hardy pled no contest to the June 2022 charges. Hardy was facing charges of Driving While License Canceled/Suspended/Revoked, Violation of Restrictions Placed on Drivers License, and DUI Alcohol/Drugs Third Offense within 10 Years. He had been suspended by AEW until he completed rehab and demonstrated that he could maintain his sobriety, a suspension that is still active. Hardy has been find $4,000, plus $586 in court costs, by the court and is on probation for 24 ..
They’re still a thing. Nine months ago, Naomi and Mercedes Mone (then Sasha Banks) walked out on WWE on the same night, vacating their Women’s Tag Team Titles in the process. That is the kind of career altering change that you do not see a wrestler deal with very often, but the two seemed united in what they were doing. Now we will get to see them united again in a very different world. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Maybe Later: How WWE Nixed Plans To Bring Back Finn Balor’s Demon The Bar Rescue Twitter account has sent out a video advertising an upcoming episode. The video includes a clip of Naomi and Mone, though it is not clear if it will be in the advertised February 26 episode. While Naomi has not wrestled since walking out on WWE in May 2022, Mone has gone on to wrestle for New Japan Pro Wrestling, including winning the promotion’s Women’s Title over the weekend. The team was good while it lasted. Check out the ad, plus the team in the ring: [This post contains video, click to play]..
We have some sad news to report today as Lanny Poffo, who was known as “The Genius” in WWE has passed away at the age of 68. From WWE.com: The son of Angelo Poffo and younger brother of WWE Hall of Famer “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Lanny Poffo had a style all his own. Arriving in WWE in 1985 alongside his brother, “Leaping” Lanny Poffo was one of the first high-flyers in WWE. While he achieved some success as a fan favorite reading his own poetry and throwing Frisbees to the crowd, he reached new heights as The Genius while managing Mr. Perfect. Lanny had the honor of inducting his brother into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2015. You can see a clip of that below: [This post contains video, click to play] Hacksaw Jim Duggan also reported this news; he did so on his Instagram account: With a very, very heavy heart, I’ve been asked to let everyone know about the passing of our friend and colleague Lanny Poffo, The Genius. That’s a big one. Vince McMahon is back in charge of WWE and that has led to a string of questions about what is coming next. No one is quite sure about where things are going in the future, but there is also the question of a variety of issues from McMahon past. Now though, he has wrapped up at least one of them with the help of his rather large bank account. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: It Was A Great Ride: WWE Hall Of Famer Parts Ways With Company According to the Wall Street Journal, McMahon has agreed to a multi-million dollar settlement with former WWE referee Rita Chatterton, who has accused McMahon of raping her in a limousine in 1986. McMahon’s lawyer, Jerry McDevitt, said that still denies the charges and settled with Chatterton to avoid the cost of a trial. There is no word on the exact amount paid, but it is said to be a lump sum followed by annual payments. This is the latest in a string of such payments to women who have accused McMahon of sexual misconduct. Payoffs have a h..
Maybe it’s him. Roman Reigns has dominated WWE over the last two years, holding the Universal Championship since August 2020. During his reign, Reigns has dominated the WWE roster and there have been very few people who have bee able to give him a run for his money. That leaves some former WWE names interested in trying their luck, and now another is interested in giving it a shot. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Star Power: Former WWE Writer Reveals Discussed Jimmy Fallon WrestleMania Segments Former WWE star Matt Cardona, formerly known as Zack Ryder, posted a tweet asking what he should do in 2023. Cardona has discussed returning to WWE at some point in the future, though there is nothing to suggest that a return is imminent or even officially being negotiated. 2020…Got Fired 2021…Reinvented Myself 2022…Made the indies my bitch 2023…?!?!?! — Matt Card..
They have a fan. AEW has come a long way in just a few years’ time. The company was only announced at the beginning of 2019 and debuted later in the year, but is now the second biggest wrestling promotion in the United States. That is quite the impact, and it seems that they have gotten the attention of a rather large restaurant chain with a sense of humor. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Still Elite: Update On Kenny Omega’s AEW Contract The latest edition of Being The Elite features AEW stars the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega (the Elite) drinking from Wendy’s cups. The Wendy’s Twitter account then sent out an image saying that Wendy’s is now All Elite. Wendy’s went on to say that their burgers are squares, and squares have four sides, while triangles have three, meaning they picked the Elite to defeat the Death Triangle 4-3. This comes as the Elite and the Death Triangle are in the middle of a best of seven series for the AEW Trios Titles, with the Elite currently down 3-1. The Wendy’s account..
Fall and pray. This past weekend, Scarlett competed in a WWE ring for the first time on the main roster. She and Karrion Kross battled the team of Emma and Madcap Moss in a tag team match at a live event in Wheeling, West Virginia. You can see footage of the match below: Scarlett and Emma Ate pic.twitter.com/LLpqbPusT7 — sameeha | Fan Account (@mcedeslynch) December 11, 2022 Kross and Scarlett were the winners of the match. Scarlett has only been featured as Kross’ valet since their debut with the company in 2020. She has been used primarily to bring Kross to the ring and remained mostly on the outside, occasionally interfering in matches. Scarlett is not new to the ring; she has competed in several other promotions, including WWE before. It is unknown if this will be a regular occurrence on the main roster, or if this was just for this live event. Editor’s Opinion: This is very cool to see! I always knew that she had talent in the ring, but with her current gimmick, she had ne..
Get them out. There are all kinds of things that come together to make a wrestling show work, but arguably the most important part would be the fans themselves. A wrestling show is only so interesting without people there to watch and interact with the wrestlers. Unfortunately there are incidents of wrestlers being mistreated by fans and that was the case again this weekend. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: New Home? Important Streaming Trend Could Shake Up AEW And WWE Television Deals According to live reports from fans on Twitter, a fan was ejected at a WWE live event in Peoria, Illinois for throwing a drink at Scarlett during a match between Karrion Kross and Drew McIntyre. Varying accounts suggest that security and police came to ringside and ejected a woman and a man, though it was not clear which one threw the drink. The match continued as the ejections took place with no incident and there is nothing to suggest that Scarlett did anything to cause the incident. Cleaning up ringside. #WW..
It can happen to anyone. There are all kinds of ways to get hurt in wrestling and as you might expect, the easiest is time is in the middle of a match. This can happen to anyone regardless of their training or experience level, which can make things all the more worrisome every time the bell rings. Now another star is injured and it came after a huge match. The main event of this weekend’s WWE Crown Jewel event saw Logan Paul unsuccessfully challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title. Following the show, Paul posted to his Twitter account that he has torn his meniscus and MCL while also possibly tearing his ACL. Paul said that the injuries took place about halfway through the match but did not say when they took place. There is no word on how long Paul could be away from the ring. torn meniscus, MCL & potentially ACL happened halfway through the match. keep y’all updated ?? pic.twitter.com/3v5tpBABCk — Logan Paul (@LoganPaul) November 6, 2022 Opinion: Unfortunate..
That’s a change of pace. WWE has a very talented roster of stars but there are times when new names have to be added. There are a variety of places that can serve as a line of talent, with WWE recently looking in one rather specific direction to find its next generation of stars. Now though, it seems that direction might be shifting back towards the place WWE looked before. According to Bryan Alvarez’s Super Followers Twitter account, WWE is once again scouting for independent wrestlers to sign to the company. This includes Gabe Sapolsky scouting talent at this weekend’s Defy Wrestling event. WWE’s previous strategy had involved focusing on athletes from other sports being turned into wrestlers. It is not clear if athletes from other sports will still be used in significant numbers. Opinion: That is a nice development to see but it is also not the biggest surprise. At the end of the day, it did not make sense to bring in so many stars from outside the wrestling world with no one comi..
It’s a special day. Some of the most important moments in the history of wrestling have taken place on television. Most modern wrestling promotions are built around television, allowing millions of fans to see what has been going on. Watching those shows has become a weekly tradition for years and now the biggest wrestling show in history is setting up for a major milestone. According to the WrestleVotes Twitter account, WWE has set plans in motion for the 30th anniversary of Monday Night Raw in January, though there is no word on what those plans might be. When Vince McMahon was still in charge of WWE, there was a possibility of the show taking place at the Manhattan Center in New York City but it is not clear if that plan is still an option. Monday Night Raw debuted on January 11, 1993. I’m told plans are in motion for the 30th Anniversary of RAW show coming up in January. Prior to the new leadership taking over, having the show from The Manhattan Center again in NYC was on the tab..
That would be different. WWE runs regular monthly premium live events as the focal point of their in-ring action. This includes several shows that the company has run for years if not decades, many of which are among the best known shows in wrestling. The company presents several shows that involve some kind of a special theme, but that might be changing going forward. According to Bryan Alvarez’s Super Fans Twitter account, by way of Wrestlingnews.co, WWE is planning to make a change to its premium live events starting in 2023. This would include more international events and fewer gimmick based events, such as Hell In A Cell or Tables Ladders And Chairs, for example. There is no word on what kind of shows would replace the originals. This comes after news broke that WWE was canceling it’s Day One event. Per Bryan Alvarez, WWE will make major changes to PPV/PLE events in 2023. Likely more international shows, less gimmick shows. — Wrestling News (@WrestlingNewsCo) October 16, 2022 ..
Clear it off the calendar. WWE runs a lot of events throughout the year, with the majority being weekly television shows. In addition, the company runs about one premium live event a month, many of which have some sort of theme. Some of these have a long history but others are one off ideas that do not have a chance to go anywhere. It seems that there will be another on that list. According to Brandon Thurston’s Patreon account, WWE has canceled the January 1, 2023 Day One event at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia and it will not be rescheduled. As of now, there are no premium live events scheduled between Survivor Series in November and Royal Rumble in January. There is no word on why the show was canceled, though scheduling against football could be an issue. An event is currently still listed on the State Farm Arena’s website, though the event is listed as TBA. Opinion: This is a move that makes sense, as WWE would have trouble continuing these events on every January 1. I..
They have their eye on her. There have been a lot of stars returning to WWE in recent months and it makes for some fascinating moments. It means something when a star comes back to the company as you wonder where they are going to go or do now that they are back. Now WWE seems interested in bringing another former star back into the fold after an absence. According to the WrestleVotes Twitter account, WWE is interested in bringing back Chelsea Green. There is no definitive word on what kind of deal, but it is believed that it would be for the main roster. Green wrestled one match on the main roster, during which she suffered an injury and never returned. Since then, Green has wrestled in Impact Wrestling, where she is a former Knockouts Tag Team Champion. I’m told another name WWE has significant interest in bringing back is Chelsea Green. I would think if a deal is offered, it’s for the main roster. Time will tell. — WrestleVotes (@WrestleVotes) October 12, 2022 Opinion: This is a..
There’s a lot more to it than that. One of the biggest wrestling stories of the week has been the backstage altercation between Andrade El Idolo and Sammy Guevara at this week’s AEW TV taping. It is the latest physical altercation between AEW stars and comes after El Idolo made negative comments about Guevara in an interview on Mexican television. Now we know some more about the situation. According to Fightful Select, El Idolo was said to have been the aggressor and was at the taping for the sake of fighting Guevara. El Idolo reportedly threw punches at Guevara, who did not throw punches back. According to Wrestling Observer Radio and Fightful Select, this is why only El Idolo was sent home and not Guevara, who went on to get the pinfall in the show’s main event. The Observer had five accounts of the incident, none of which say that Guevara ever threw a punch, but one account did say he shoved El Idolo after being spun around. El Idolo is said to be doing this in an effort to get fir..
He’ll be around. With so much talent on the WWE roster, it can be difficult to find something for everyone to do. There are certain people who are going to be able get on television almost every week, but at some point there is going to be a need for some fresh blood. That can do a lot of good for the roster, and now it seems to be good for one of its prominent stars. According to the WrestleVotes Twitter account, the new WWE regime is high on Finn Balor and has significant plans for him going forward. It is not clear what those plans are, but Balor is expected to be featured in the foreseeable future. Balor is currently part of the Judgment Day stable and is set to face Edge in an I Quit match at Extreme Rules on October 8. I’m told that significant plans are lined up for Finn Balor in the future. I don’t know exactly for what those plans are, but he is a strong favorite of the new leadership group. Expect Finn to play a big role in the foreseeable future of WWE. — WrestleVotes (@W..
