Money money? One of the biggest criticisms that you will hear of professional wrestling is that the endings are planned out in advance as the entire presentation is fixed. While this is true, the stories are built up in a way to leave fans wondering what they are going to see in a match or story. That can make things all the more interesting, and it could potentially make some money. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: They Could See Him: Backstage WWE Reaction To John Cena’s Monday Night Raw Appearance According to CNBC, WWE is attempting to legalize betting on its matches in Colorado and Michigan. The company has hired accounting firm Ernst & Young to help with the pitch. The firm has helped legalizing betting on the Emmys and Oscars, with WWE claiming that their results are kept secret in the same way. One potential solution would be for WWE to have storylines and results locked in place in advance, with wrestlers only finding out the results just before a match takes place. However, CNBC is a..
It’s part of the job. Despite its problems, WWE is still the biggest and most powerful wrestling promotion in the world. The company is active in several countries, but the majority of its work is done in the United States. It makes sense for the company to want to be associated with some of the biggest sporting events in the country and they tried to do so again this week. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Again: WWE Reportedly Makes More Office Cuts This Week Monday Night Raw stars Montez Ford and Raw Women’s Champion Bianca Belair appeared on NBC’s pre-game coverage of the Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Kansas City Chiefs NFL playoff game. Ford talked about the energy being the same as you find at a WWE event and Belair talked about the high stakes. Both picked the Chiefs to win, which would wind up being correct. It was a cool moment. Check out part of their appearance and the two of them in their more familiar location: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, clic..
He’s kind of a problem. WWE is in the middle of one of the shakiest times they have ever had, as the company seems likely to be sold much sooner rather than later. That is the kind of thing that can shake up the wrestling industry and there are all kinds of details that would need to be worked out. Now we have an idea of one of the major details, at least for one specific person. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Steve Austin Works Does The Weather And Works The Drive Thru At Restaurant There are several companies that are considered possible buyers for WWE. However, according to Fightful Select, contacts at both Disney and Comcast (the owner of NBC Universal) both feel that no major company would want to keep Vince McMahon around “in any capacity if they could help it”. There has been no definitive word on what would happen to McMahon if/when the company is sold. Leave the memories alone? Check out some of McMahon’s time in WWE: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post c..
When two become one. According to a report from CNBC, Shad and Tony Khan, owners of AEW, are interested in merging with WWE. The report states that AEW could partner with a strategic media company to share the intellectual property while merging the two companies. However, the idea that Vince McMahon would merge his company with AEW is a long shot. AEW hasn’t had talks with McMahon or Nick Khan, the new CEO for WWE. The Khans are open to discussing a potential role for McMahon, after a sale but haven’t yet had those talks. It’s unclear what type of job McMahon would want with WWE after a sale, primarily because WWE is a much larger and more established organization than AEW. WWE is reportedly planning to sell the company sometime in 2023. Editor’s Opinion: Wow, this is not the headline that I expected to read today. I’m not exactly sure how a merger would work, particularly with Tony Khan and Vince McMahon as the two people that would work out the details. They are both very inves..
Let the bidding begin. According to a report from CNBC, WWE has hired JPMorgan to begin the process of selling the company. This is being reported following the news that Vince McMahon returned to the company yesterday. The report states that if a deal occurs, it would likely occur in the next three to six months. In addition, WWE plans to talk to potential buyers before it makes a decision on TV rights renewal agreements. McMahon had the following to stay in a statement: “My return will allow WWE, as well as any transaction counterparties, to engage in these processes knowing they will have the support of the controlling shareholder.” His return doesn’t affect current leadership as Stephanie, and former CAA agent Nick Khan are co-CEOs. However, it remains unclear what type of role, if any, Vince would want at WWE if he sold the company. WWE has told investors that his role is essential in “our ability to create popular characters and creative storylines.” Currently, Vince doesn’t h..
That would be a change. There are different ways to freshen up a star in wrestling and some of them are rather simple concepts. One of the best ways is to turn someone from bad to good or vice versa, as such a change can freshen someone up almost immediately. It changes everything around and can give a wrestler a different attitude. Now a top WWE star is interested in making such a switch. Former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre appeared on NBC Boston’s The Ten Count podcast and discussed the possibility of a heel turn. McIntyre said that if he were to ever turn heel again, he would not want to be the angry big man again. Instead, McIntyre wants to educate himself on who he is and be more interested the second time around. McIntyre was speaking hypothetically and there is nothing to indicate that McIntyre will be turning anytime soon. Opinion: This is something that does seem to be a possibility down the line and it is something that could go well if that is what WWE decides to do. McIntyr..
That would be a different world. There are two major wrestling promotions in the United States with WWE and AEW. The two companies dominate the professional wrestling scene and there is nothing to suggest that will not be the case in the future. Both are extremely well funded and have lucrative television deals. However, a potential change could be on the horizon that could shake everything up. According to the Hollywood Reporter, NBC Universal may be considering an attempt to buy Warner Brothers Discovery within the next year and a half. Due to Warner Brothers and Discovery merging earlier this year, no negotiations can officially begin until 2024. Should NBC Universal buy the company, Monday Night Raw (NBC Universal) and AEW (Warner Brothers Discovery) would be under the same umbrella. This is still far away from happening and is still only seen as a possibility. Opinion: Were still far enough away from this that it almost isn’t worth talking about yet, but my goodness this could b..
It had been previously reported that WWE had made a new filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, announcing that Vince McMahon had paid $14.6 million that were not recorded as company expenses. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the SEC and federal prosecutors have launched inquiries into payments made by McMahon to settle allegations of sexual misconduct. The report states that the payments were made from 2006 through 2022. WWE has said McMahon “has or will pay” all the expenses personally, and it expects to revise previous financial statements going back to 2019 to reflect the payments. WWE also said that an internal board investigation “expects to conclude that its internal control over financial reporting was not effective as a result of one or more material weaknesses.” WWE has lucrative licensing deals with entertainment giants such as Fox Corp. and NBCUniversal, which could be at risk due to these allegations. The company is also seeking new busines..
Flash from the past. WWE has been around for a very long time now and the company has a rather incredible history. Over time, there have been a lot of different periods and eras, some of which are a lot more famous than others. There have been some very famous ones though, and WWE seemed to be interested in bringing back something that likely would have only fit in one era. In a new interview with NBC Sports’ Boston Steve, former WWE star Killer Kross talked about an idea he had pitched to revive the Corporate Ministry. Kross felt that the idea would work due to nostalgia and said that there was a group of writers on board with the concept. The idea would have been to fictionalize the idea of cults and evil businesses and put them on television with nostalgia thrown in. There is nothing to suggest that the idea ever went past the planning stage. Opinion: I’m not sure I could imagine this working, as the Corporate Ministry is about as Attitude Era as you could get. While I get the ide..
Everyone has to start somewhere. There have been a lot of wrestlers to come through the WWE locker room over the years but only a few have stood out at the highest level. Those are the names that are remembered in a fond way for a long time to come, but even they might not have had the best time in the company. One such legend is talking about how badly things went for her at first. During an interview with NBC Sports Boston, WWE legend Victoria spoke about her beginnings with the company. Victoria began with WWE as one of Godfather’s Ho’s, despite having signed a full time contract with the company. When she started, she dressed in the women’s locker room but was thrown out by one of the other WWE stars, forcing her to dress in the janitor’s closet. This was due to the majority of the Godfather’s Ho’s being local strippers rather than full time wrestlers. Victoria went on to become a two time WWE Women’s Champion and spent over twenty years in the industry. Opinion: This is one of t..
He had a reason. The rise of AEW has changed the wrestling landscape in a positive way, as there is now a new place for wrestlers to go. This includes younger and older wrestlers, as AEW has been a new home for quite a few legends of the industry as well. Now it seems that they wanted to try to pick up another one, but got turned down due to the legend not thinking he was up to it. WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle appeared on NBC’s Ten Count podcast to discuss his wrestling career. During the interview, Angle revealed that AEW President Tony Khan offered him a contract to wrestle ten matches for AEW. However, Angle turned it down as he had recently started his supplement company, as well as feeling that he could not be his old self any longer. Angle was also offered a non-wrestling role but turned it down as well, again citing his supplement company. There is a lot of good stuff here. Check out the full interview: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: I can appreciate and..
That’s a big step. Wrestlers are celebrities and that means they are going to be receive attention, at least in some circles. At the same time, they are mainly only going be known for one thing. This can create some issues for wrestlers, especially if they are doing something outside of their norm. That was the case a few years ago and now, after a tragic incident, something is going to change. Back in May 2020, Japanese star Hana Kimura was a cast member on the Terrace House reality series in Japan. Her appearances were met with a series of online insults and harassment, which led Kimura to commit suicide. Now, according to NBC News, the Japanese government has passed a new law, making online insults punishable by up to a year in prison and a fine of up to 300,000 yen (about $2,260). The law is expected to go into effect this summer. Opinion: It is always fascinating to see a wrestler make this kind of an impact outside of the ring, though it is a shame that it has to take place due..
The important ones. WWE is the biggest and most powerful wrestling promotion in the world but they still have new places to conquer. The company already has a huge international presence and some major television deals, but they can always use more money and power. Now they have the chance to do so, and we know who they are using to help present themselves. This week, NBC Universal is holding its up fronts in New York City, where the company tries to convince companies to buy advertising time on their shows. This includes WWE, which featured the Miz and Bianca Belair as WWE’s official representatives. The NBC Advertising And Partnerships Twitter account posted a photo of the two at the presentations. NBC Universal currently airs WWE Monday Night Raw and WWE content on its Peacock streaming service. That could be interesting. Professional wrestling is about telling stories and there have been some very interesting ones told over the years. This has made for some fascinating television as you can see how all of the characters come together to make something work. Now we might be seeing a twist on it though, as we could be seeing a show about the business itself. According to Deadline, NBCUniversal is developing a series called Pinned, which will be set in a fictional wrestling promotion. The series will have FOX Sports’ Tom Rinaldi and Vince McMahon as executive producers and is described as: “…an “adrenalized” upstairs-downstairs soap that gives a behind-the-scenes look at a fictional wrestling promotion and the “unforgettable” characters that populate it. Pinned offers a front-row seat into the eccentric wrestling culture and the mayhem that exists between the locker room and the boardroom.” There is no word on when or where the series will air, as NBCUniversal has not tied it..
That’s some big exposure. WWE is in the middle of its biggest season of the year as we are on the Road To WrestleMania 38. With less than two months to go before WrestleMania, WWE is going to want all of the attention that it can get for the show. That is easier said than done, but WWE certainly has the money to make it a possibility. They did just that this weekend on the biggest television night of the year. WWE aired a commercial during Super Bowl LVI on Sunday night, featuring Pat McAfee using various adjectives to describe what WrestleMania will be. The advertisement promotes both Monday Night Raw and WrestleMania, which will air on the USA Network and Peacock. Those platforms are both owned by NBC Universal, which is the home of the Super Bowl. WrestleMania 38 airs on April 2 and 3. It was a pretty cool night. Check out this year’s commercial (both versions), plus the WWE’s most famous Super Bowl ad: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click ..
We all smell what he’s cooking. Tonight, Dwayne Johnson provided the introduction for Super Bowl LVI (56) between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals. The Rock introduced the teams with hints of his WWE persona. You can see the introduction below: [This post contains video, click to play] .@THEROCK. INCREDIBLE OPENING TO #SBLVI ?: #SBLVI on NBC ?: https://t.co/K02y40b5Nu pic.twitter.com/Jib7mVPztC — NFL (@NFL) February 13, 2022 The Rock is no stranger to Super Bowl introductions; in 2020, he gave the introductions for the teams in Super Bowl LIV (54). He has a history with football; from 1990 to 1994, he played for the University of Miami Hurricanes. Although he would be a part of the national championship team in 1991, Johnson would appear in a backup role, starting only one game in four years. After Johnson graduated in 1995, he signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League as a linebacker. He was assigned to the practice roster but was cut tw..
That’s a lot of money. WWE has made a fortune by producing so much content that they are constantly in demand. Other platforms are interested in bringing over WWE and everything that they can showcase, which comes with a built in audience. That can come at a high price tag, and now it seems that one of WWE’s biggest partners has paid for quite a few of those price tags. According to Variety, Peacock, the official platform for the WWE Network in the United States, lost $1.7 billion in 2021, doubling its losses from last year. Peacock is entering its third year of availability and features Universal films, NBC television and WWE content. There is nothing to suggest that Peacock will be shutting down, as it is reportedly not expected to be profitable until 2025. Opinion: This is one of those things that is kind of hard to get my head around, as losing nearly two billion dollars sounds catastrophic to any business. That being said, NBC Universal is a mammoth company and something on the ..
Mark your calendars. WWE has a lot of television content to film and that can make things a bit hectic at times. Some of their shows are the biggest in wrestling and it makes sense that they will take priority over others. Sometimes though there are bigger forces at work that have to be catered to, and that is going to be the case with WWE’s biggest show for a little while. According to PWInsider.com, two weeks of Monday Night Raw and NXT will be moved from the USA Network to SyFy. The February 7 and February 14 Monday Night Raw and February 8 and February 15 NXT will be moved due to USA’s coverage of the Winter Olympics. The moves will only be for those two weeks, with both shows being back on USA starting on February 21. Opinion: This is the kind of thing that is going to happen at some point and that is not a bad thing. WWE gets a lot of benefits out of their relationship with NBC and sometimes they have to give something up in exchange. Just advertise things as much as you can so..
