As seen at The Royal Rumble PPV last night, ”Mr Wrestling” Kevin Owens came out on top against ”The Big Dog” Roman Reigns in his bout and retained the WWE Universal Championship after outside interjection from ”Monster Among Men” Braun Strowman.
Initial reports pointed towards a ”Reigns versus Strowman” program after Royal Rumble PPV, as the two are scheduled to face each other on RAW Live Events heading into WrestleMania 33. Also, there were reports that Owens will be facing ”The Underdog from the Underground” Sami Zayn at those shows.
The ”Owens versus Zayn” matches will be for the WWE Universal Championship, although Dave Meltzer noted on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that the ”Reigns vs. Strowman” matches will be headlining those shows, but the plan is for Reigns to go face to face with ”The Deadman” The Undertaker at WrestleMania, which was teased during the Traditional 30-man Royal Rumble match.
It appears that Kevin Owens versus ”The Icon” Bill Goldberg for the WWE Universal Title will be booked for WWE FastLane PPV on March 5th, with Goldberg winning the title and then defending against ”The Embarrassed Beast” Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 33. Meltzer said that it is indeed the plan.
Meltzer had first reported in last week’s issue of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that neither ”The Phenomenal” A.J. Styles or Kevin Owens were scheduled to head into ”The Grandest Stage of them All” WrestleMania as champion.
Bill Goldberg does not work WWE house shows, so if he were to defeat Owens at WWE FastLane PPV as per the plans, that would mean that the WWE Universal Title would not be defended at RAW house shows between FastLane and WrestleMania.
