After months of speculation, MJF won the AEW World Championship on Saturday night at AEW Full Gear. Since his return, MJF has been pushed as an emerging babyface with a “clean victory’ over Jon Moxely being a point of pride for his character.

However, William Regal slid his own brass knuckles to MJF for him to take another shortcut to the richest prize in AEW. An angle that had been heavily foreshadowed on AEW television for weeks, especially since the MJF/Regal confrontation promo. While the swerve of the storyline was obvious, the fun of the situation is the questions that the AEW fanbase is asking about what happens next.

After the PPV, Dave Melter reported on F4Wonline that Tony Khan was the one who put the final angle together. In fact, he actually held very strong that his plan was the best direction forward despite several “influential wrestlers” and other proposing creative ideas for the finish.

The word is that MJF winning the championship was always the plan, but there were just several alternative routes of how to reach that conclusion. It seems that having Regal all but hand the AEW World Championship to MJF was something that Tony Khan specifically wanted moving forward.

Another report from Dave Meltzer detailed that MJF and William Regal are anticipated to be forming a new duo that is comparable to Don Callis and Kenny Omega on AEW television. It’s fascinating to consider because AEW has a heck of a booking situation to handle in the weeks ahead.

Wait, what just happened?

First of all, there’s the backlash from the Blackpool Combat Club. William Regal hasn’t just betrayed Jon Moxley, but this is a character betrayal to Wheeler Yuta, Bryan Danielson and Claudio Castagnoli as well. Now, the new AEW World Champion has the entire Blackpool Combat Club after him for revenge.

Not to mention, that MJF is having great issues with The Firm and Stokley Hathaway. There’s a ton of great stuff to work with there, two completely different interacting stories and a bunch of potential matches with MJF as the centerpiece. Ethan Page or Ricky Starks are also about to enter the fold for the AEW Championship as well.

There’s a lot of ground to cover in the coming weeks and Tony Khan demanded MJF and Regal together. Let’s find out why.
